edit: yes, Jamie is indeed a capitalist. But then again so are the oil barons ripping off consumers worldwide. 'we have to keep raising prices' spoken in one ear 'record profits' in the other

No, she isn't. Jaime's worldview is step 1: Exist step 2: profit. That is not capitalism.

I still don't get why people are surprised / outraged about this.

NOBODY is forcing ANYBODY to buy ANYTHING. If you don't want to buy, don't. Additionally, unless the person hosting the yardsale claims to have built the items themselves, I dont see what the big deal is.

SL claims to be a place you can make tons of money really fast. How else do you expect people to react?
Sure, selling freebies may not violate the TOS, but that conduct speaks loudly about the seller's moral and ethical character.

Freebie items exist to help new members get started and selling those items defeats that intent. Instead, the seller of freebie items is preying on new members not helping them.

In life there are always people who take advantage of others, and they are justifiably shunned.

OK a quick 'lil story that kinda relates to this thread I started, but is also funny as hell.

Less than a minute ago I was happy as hell playing a game and then out of the blue I get 'so and so pays U $1L', 'so and so pays U $1L' 'so and so pays U $1L'......5 times I get this and I think.....shit I left something for $1L, (because I had like 2 or 3 things labeled for $1L at one time) and I had this thread freshly in my mind.

So I leave my game, quickly TP home, and what do I find? I find a gal buying pieces of the bubble gum from my Moopf Murray Bubble Gum Machine that I JUST bought and installed today.

I felt dumb as hell.

The moral of this 'lil tale is #1 Old age fucks w/ your memory, don't think it doesn't

The moral of this 'lil tale is #2 I actually let the 'parasites' dictate how I reacted beacuse I thought there was someone buying my 'crap' with the intention of reselling...

Really? You don't see anything wrong with fleecing newbies? You don't see anything wrong with taking advantage of people's ignorance to sell them things they can easily get for free? Do you actually think that that is a decent business plan? To rip off your customers? Do you actually think that capitalism is based on ripping off people? Or do you think that capitalism is about you making a quick buck screwing the people who could become your repeat customers.

Effing Amazing.

Bravo! I agree 100%, and I've had big companies take my freebies and sell them back to me...

And I bought them.

That is the ultimate salesman. I tip my hat.

I disagree.

Water IRL is a freebie. Yet many companies make fortunes off selling it. Why are you not mad at them, as well?

A good capitalist finds opportunity and uses it to the max.

Just like Bill Gates did. He didn't create MSDOS himself, he bought it for 50,000 and sold it to IBM for millions and millions. He didnt create the idea for Windows, he ripped it from Steve Jobs and Apple. He didnt invent the search engine, but he's about to kick Google's ass by making it better.

And yet, everyone agrees Bill Gates is a great Capitalist - but maintains "freebie" sellers are bogus.

BS, I say!

He bought it for 50,000 and sold it to IBM for millions and millions.

And yeah, he's a bit of a scum bag if he didn't actually add anything to the product.

I'm not saying salepeople are useless. They're not, mainly because they are the venue for getting products from one point to the other. If if wasn't for salespeople, I wouldn't be able to buy products from China.

But freebies are easily available everywhere in SL, and newbies already have lots of places they can get them from. It really doesn't require you to make any effort whatsover for you to just grab a few copies and sell them. So in that sense you're just a parasite instead of a facilitator. But more power to you if you don't have a problem with it. Nice guys finish last after all.

Yes Jamie, but just how much time, effort and money is spent getting that free water from the sky to your kitchen tap in a state that's safe for you to use?

Ooops... did I just ruin your argument there?

And again, just how much time, effort and money has been spent on those products by him? How much time, effort and money has gone into IMPROVING the original concepts and products?

Again, I've ruined your argument...

Yes Jamie... but Bill Gates isn't just picking up a freebie, sticking it in a shiny new box, then selling it on at one hell of a profit...

Do you spend time, effort and money improving the products? Or do you just stick them in a box and sell free items for a vast profit?

Since I've made the mistake of buying some of your "products" I already know the answer... and it isn't the one that involves improving them...

"You don't see anything wrong with fleecing newbies? You don't see anything wrong with taking advantage of people's ignorance to sell them things they can easily get for free?"

Second Life is a free-market economy, where "buyer beware" is the ruling philosophy. It is not up to the seller to educate the buyer in sensible consumer practices. It is up to the buyer.

Every "newbie" on SL is an adult capable of making their own decisions, and their own mistakes are their own fault.

The value of something isn't how "good" it is, or how much effort people have put into it. The value of something is what the purchaser is willing to pay for it. And if newbies are willing to pay for items they can get for free elsewhere, then so be it.

Is it wrong to sell items that are available free elsewhere? If I buy a fish at the supermarket, is the supermarket wrong to sell it to me because I can get fish for free by going out on a boat with a net? Is it wrong for a shop to sell a DVD to me for £15 when a shop down the street is selling the same DVD for £10?

It is not the job of content creators to tell you what's best for you, the purchaser. If it were, they'd say "stop sitting alone at a computer playing a game and go and play in the sun, have sex with someone you love and eat wholesome food instead".

Musuko.
