There is nothing to grasp. Log in and do whatever you want, that's all there is to it.

That sounded really convincing. *claps*

My advice would be to get in and work with it. It's like life. You have to live it. Especially considering Second Life is more of a virtual world than game.

In my view, Second Life's greatest potential is also its greatest downfall.

Unlike most games, SL has no goals or set targets - only those that you set yourself. Think of it as a blank piece of paper, that you can do anything you like with - be it write a story, draw/paint a picture, fold up into an aeroplane, or screw into a ball and throw at someone.

It is this lack of structure that gives people unlimited freedom to build/do whatever they like - but it can also be frustrating when you don't get that spark of inspiration/creativity.

A lot of people use SL as a way to make real money - but I believe that sells SL short as there is much more you can do.

Once you know what to do, we can probably help you more but for now I'd just suggest wandering round and seeing what's on, using the events calendar (Find > Events), Classified advertisments, or even the popular places list, and get out to meet people and see what others have done using the same tools you have at your disposal.

You will find a lot of useful classes run by a variety of places/people that will help you get to grips with the potential here - look on the events calendar. Also, places like The Shelter and New Citizens Inc can be good to hook up with people in similar situations to yourself (ie new) and learn together.

Hope that helps. Welcome to SL.

Is your report for college or highschool?

Depending on your answer I could provide further PG or non-PG responses.

People would be more inclined to help if you would stop highlighting your dislike of games.

What type of overlord is requesting this "report"? Do you work in a mine?

If it were a report that I requested, I would demand that you get in there and find out some things for yourself.

I don't like games either, btw, and this thread seems quite like one to me.

Hm, well first off I'd stress that Second Life isn't exactly a game - it's more of a whole virtual world.

Maybe it's sort of a game about a virtual world.

go to places like:
The Shelter
New Citizens Inc
and other welcome centers

If you want to learn how to build go to:
Ivory Tower of Primitives

There are more but I don't want to give you to much information because a few people gave me long lists in the begining and it just confused me.

Press F1. Read.

Join NCI, the New Citizen group.

Do the building tutorial there.

Use the Help menu Support Wiki option to pull up the support wiki in a browser and bookmark that.

Use the find dialog to find educational events, and go to them.

Go to a sandbox area and play with the build editor.

SL is known for being a very helpful community and I certainly received it when I first joined.

As I learn more and more, I find myself passing the help along to other newbies in the community.

That being said, it helps the learning process if one takes the time and shows interest in learning for one self through trial and error.

My general instinct on this thread is that someone is looking to have the SL world handed to him on a silver platter and we write his "report" for him.

It's not really a game.

So, if you want to "grasp it," just ask yourself how you grasp the world wide web or IRC or any other communications and data exchange platform.

A general cry of help doesn't let us know what the problem is...so please elaborate.

Report on Second Life:

Second Life (SL) is a virtual community of many interconnected Sims (server based virtual land).

The land is sold by the creators of SL, Linden Labs (LL) to "land barons" who in turn sell to individuals. LL also sells some very small "first land" lots to new premium members at a big discount

The land is usually empty, except for some trees, which can be easily moved or deleted. The owner can build anything he/she wishes on the land, but there is a limit on how many objects (or parts of objects, each part is counted as 1 prim). Objects can be attached to each other to make more detailed objects, but each piece counts as a prim. A small 512 meter lot supports 117 prim. Basic members can't own land, but since there is no need to sleep or eat, the need for owning land is minimal. Building objects can be done in sims called sand boxes.

The new owner has control over the land to change it in many ways. The land may be raised or lowered up to about 4 meters. The owner has control of who can visit the land. One may place a house or any other object(s) on their land that fit within the land boundaries. Houses sell for about $L200 - $L1000, about $3 for $L1000.

Money can be purchased in world. Premium members receive $L500 per week.

Each account is provided with an AV (avatar) person to represent the account. That AV can be changed in thousands of combinations to appear as virtually anything. The AV can walk and fly around the world or can be teleported long distances instantly. The person controlling the AV can change the look of the AV at any time, almost instantaniously. In the world one can buy clothing, skins, hair and many other accessories for the AV. Or just use the default that comes free.

Within the world are all kinds of stores and social activities. Clubs and in-world games (such as Tringo) are popular.

SL has a major social attraction. One can meet people from all over the World and form social bonds. In some parts of SL communities have sprouted up, creating mini-Governments that seek to monitor and regulate the use of the land, similar to a gated community.

The fact is, SL has so many different things going on, it would take years just to catalog them, and by then they would be outdated. The best way to really understand SL is to fly around, talk to the people, play, dance, socialize etc. That should provide the tip of the iceberg.

I hope this gives you a small overview of what SL is.

So essentially you want us to write a repor that you are getting paid to do...

Wow, maybe I should try it some times.

Anyone wants to work on some embedded design for free?

Why would you expect someone looking for the means to write a report without doing any research to put time into posing their question?

Why would anyone accommodate such a request?

The best way to grasp the game is to decide what -you- want. Think of it as a platform or a huge open ended RPG. Others can't define your secondlife anymore than they can define your first one.

insert definition>

game 1 (gm) KEY

NOUN:
  1. An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime: party games; word games.

Use "Find"
06-16-2006 12:32
When I got to the mainland, after days of dutifully studying the tutorials on Help Island, I hurried out of the telehub to explore this new world. My first impression; two words. Deserted buildings.

I suspect that the chaotic, often desolate worldscape turns off a lot of newbies. The antidote is to realize that in a world with teleportation it's normal for things that are spatially next to each other to make no sense. So I think the best advice for newbies is, don't bother walking or flying around. Just use Find to search for things you want to see or do, and teleport to them directly.

So, put that in your report and maybe your boss will give you a longer chain. 8-)
