So fun to see the usual crew pile on in their never-ending campaign to run me out of town on a rail. I'm starting to think they live for it.

However, I do believe we were discussing the forums. And I believe several people had started discussing the use of the word "tard" on the forums. I added my thoughts on same.

They're all busy not telling people how many forum ARs are submitted by the mother hens.

I thought it was rampant sexism ruining the forums.

There is a certain irony about a thread about forum moderation needing moderation, you must agree. I was wrong, these forums are amazingly consistent.

I do agree its ironic. As far as consistancy they are consistantly inconsistant, yes.

On the new topic at hand, I definitely can see why people would be offended by variations on the word retard. While it has been homogonized through usage to have little connection to its original usage, it is still always a derogatory word that does have the exact same connotation - someone stupid or slow that doesn't understand something or is just a general idiot.

Labelling it as "hate speech" is a major grey area - attacks against the handicapped do fall under hate speech/hate crime laws in some cases. It's much cloudier when you are levelling it as an insult against someone who is not in fact handicapped. It is further clouded by free speech issues and the intended audience and target. It is quite a stretch to claim Siggy calling someone a tard is hate speech. Offensive, yes - but it would only be hate speech if he were actively attacking someone mentally disabled for purposes of denigrating them based upon their condition.

I'd suggest that some of you never turn cable TV on. (Or Saturday Night Live and MadTV for that matter.)

What I find offensive is people who scream SEXISM, HATE SPEECH, RACISM! OMFGZ constantly at non- issues as an excuse.

These are REAL issues in a REAL world - and these catcalls lessen what these terms are about and supposed to protect.

In the last year in the city I live in there was a bunch of nice folks who walked up and down the streets with signs screaming at the top of their lungs how God hates Fags, and how they should all die horribly... Another group of folks took time out to spit and throw things at a group of Muslim women on their way to practice their religion.. Not to mention stories of spousal abuse, daterape, and various minoritys having the crap kicked out of them.

REAL ISSUES.

oh i have another forum moderation idea. instead of rating threads everyone should get to rate the poster. then we can all filter posters by ratings. becoming muted democratically might make me post less sarcastically.
