From: Eboni Khan Not really you get an icon in your forum posts which looks cool, but if you are over 16 and impressed by that, you need to seek professional help. Sure beats a smack on the bottom though doesn't it? Ideally, we wouldn't need any sort of moderation, but that's just not going happen. Diane's idea appeals to me more than what we have right now. If someone wants to give me a gold star, I'm fine with that. Would I feel empowered or superior? Uh... no. But it's nice to know that someone thinks my thread isn't full of crap.

From: Eggy Lippmann I think we could do with both. There are a lot of worthless threads being posted. I would like to see more drama threads being locked, and faster. Starting with my own nazi thread that people keep bumping Have you asked the moderator to lock the thread, and asked other people to request a thread lock as well?

I think you have to look at what the forums are here for.
It's my opinion that they're not REALLY for our 'discussions on SL' and General is certainly not for what it's listed as.
It's for PR. People can come see what a wonderful place it all is (and don't get me wrong - the PLACE is pretty wonderful) - so a lot of stuff is shipped off to the gulag of off topic that actually ARE discussions and insights int SL.. just not terribly happy ones.
I personally think General/Off Topic - should be nerfed - let that stuff go to 3rd party sites.. keep the more specific stuff like hotline, announcements, scripting library, that jazz.
As much as I really enjoy the forums strictly for thier comedic value (coz eh - 99% of all this stuff is one big joke to me), it's not really doing its job.
Makes me wanna start my own forum server.. anyone for 'Something NotTerriblyNice'?

Personally I think they could do one thing to the forums that would change them for the better....bring back the Rant forum....when they closed that down all the rants just went to General and off topic. When the Rant forum was still alive it gave people a place to blow off some steam and have a lil fun and the general forum was not abused nearly as much as it is today.

I think Dianne's idea has merit, but I agree with the larger idea that these forums are not in need of more moderation, and that there are far more important things for LL to be applying their limited resources to. Retrain Jeska to bug test! I would rather them improving SL than making sure that Ingrid's potty mouth is kept in check in the forums.

And on a serious note.. I agree Eboni, that there are issues pertaining to SL that I would really like the Lindens to focus on. But not all the Lindens do tech stuff, and with such a small staff, it seems only a few handle the forums. That is part of the reason I like the ResMod system. It does free up a lot of Linden time so that they can focus on other aspects of SL.
At the same time, I really think the forums are an important part of SL. So I'm glad some things are being tried. I'd hate to see them go away completely, even if I can understand why they might.

I vote for the rant forum. I also think the resmods should be tasked with providing creative input to worth while threads. Gold stars not necessary. When a thread gets slightly angry make a good solid thought out post that is thought provoking and completely ignores the rant.

I think if LL really cared about the future of SL they would... Close general and Off-Topic. They seem to have limited resources and these 2 forums are just eating them up. They have controlled most of the Classifieds drama. If they left it to forums that are stictly on the topic of SL, like Textures etc. They would be easier to moderate, because they would be more black and white and less grey. I know not all Lindens are technical. The fact of the matter is SL is a technical product. The majority of the time, resources and brainstorming should go to correct issues with the grid, not babysitting adults to create some puppies and rainbows forum. That kitty is too cute to hate everything and is a poor representation of my bitterness... Enabran and myself will continue our efforts the spread the Republican agenda far and wide. I am Eboni Khan, and I approve this message.

From: Eboni Khan I think if LL really cared about the future of SL they would... Close general and Off-Topic. Why? How would that improve the future of SL? How does either forum threaten the future of SL? Sorry, does not compute. We're all adults here. I don't need to be protected from words and I don't think SL does either.

From: Dianne Mechanique Similarly, the presence of a single angry "tard" (or several) seems to drag everyone down. Otherwise serious, polite and smart people start stooping to the lowest level and take extreme glee in trouncing said "tard," but using the self-same tactics! This effectively multiplies the "tard" population, and sends things spiraling out of control. I am still laughing...funny but accurate assessment! We have all seen it. I call it the feeding frenzy. There really is a limited group of members who seem to jump on the bandwagon when discourse veers off in a bad direction. What about rather than punishing the "tards" as you have graphically described them, what if we had some kind of limited and temporary ignore or mute function that a resmod could impose when a bad post was made. The mute could last for a predetermined period of time, maybe even just a few hours, to allow a time out cooling off period when a thread becomes a pissing match between members intent on trading insults. There used to be an inworld sanction where a griefer would be bounced off of SL by a liason and his/her reentry would be blocked for one hour. That seemed like a good idea to me when it was used to allow time, distance and cooling off in a bad situation. A temporary mute. or block function that the resmods could use in response to a bad post would serve to allow the time out cooling off without a more imposing sanction that would be lengthier and "on the record."

oh.. and please refrain from the use of the word "tard". I remember when it was cool, but now it is so 1980s and a tad hurtful to those with special needs children.

Well even though I am getting a bit of flack today for coming up with such a hideously positive suggestion, I would like to point out that when the first "forum behaviour" rules came out I argued that we didn't need rules at all and was also strongly in favor of a rant forum. I don't think that's going to happen though as (I think Chip?) said, a part of what the forum is about is advertising for LL. They don't want their name on a forum where someone is actually allowed to say whatever they want by any means and are probably thinking of closing them down as someone else noted.

From: Eboni Khan Then why do we have hall monitors? Beats the hell out of me. As I've said before I don't think more moderation is needed, so I also don't see any need to get rid of any of the forums now or in the future or how not closing them down indicates any lack of care for SL by LL. Sorry, I've just never understood the "get rid of the forums" thing.

"Tard" is just short for "Retarded" which is a scientifically accurate term for kids that are, well... retarded. It is not meant to be offensive, it's meant to be an accurate descriptive term.

You never know who you are going to offend on a forum so decorum may be the best route. Me, I laugh at all of it, but I am sensitive to things that might offend others as described in this new pc day and age.
