Yikes!

Well I don't want to offend anyone so I will try not to use it again, but I absolutely refuse to use that "Special Needs" tag. Might as well use "shamalamadingdong" or any other series of random sounds/characters as that.

IMO if your going to replace a perfectly good word, you got to at least make up one that has an actual meaning to it. (even "Developmentally Disabled" is pretty vague).

Also, dare I grin (just a little bit) at Lector Hannibal maintaining he is "sensitive?"

Jeska's recent characterization of the new ResMod system as being a slashdot-like style of moderation is very misleading.

What Dianne is describing here is more akin to a slashdot style of user moderation: http://slashdot.org/faq/com-mod.shtml#cm600

The only similarity between this new system and slashdot moderation is that they both enlist willing members. While ResMods can make use of the star ranking system this is a far cry from slashdot's scores/points/bonuses/karma system.

I also agree with the comments about "tard," and think it was quite well explained by a couple of posters earlier.

And I resent it on both as the insult it was intended to be, and as a grossly insensitive thing to say, where other remarks marginalizing groups of individuals would be viewed as hate speech and would not be allowed.

To clarify - the word "hatespeech" which you seem to take issue to: My girls used to call each other tards, and they also used to say, "oh, that's so gay," about something they thought was dumb.

I told them that such remarks were hurtful and harmful, and repeated myself about a jillion times before they finally got the idea and stopped saying them.

That is what I mean by "hate speech." To me, for forum purposes, it is hate speech, although I will say that it is not INTENDED as such. However, for the purposes of a forum, I would think that whether or not such comments are intended as hateful shouldn't matter; the fact that they are offensive and hurtful to entire groups of people should be enough to make them verbotin on the forums. One would think.

I don't care what you call each other in private, and I don't care what my girls say to their friends when I'm not around. They do, though, now understand that such remarks are hurtful, and I would hope you would agree as well, whether or not you agree with my characterization of them as "hate speech."

I don't care what your 'definition' is - I think calling everything you don't like as 'hate speech' really denigrates the term and lessens it. I think its stupid - its over the top - you may was well hold the back of your hand to forehead and scream 'OH THE DRAMA'
