I think a chipped porcelain throne buried halfway into the ground and a few ragged Gerbera daisies potted in the bowl. Fuschia and peach, of course. They can't match. And perhaps a tribute to fat Elvis.

I just wanted to HOLLA and say I've been watching this thread closely for the new ideas, letting some things gel. It's important I hear it out!
So, here's my latest comments: + Saaaad the SLottery can't be done. I conversed further with Sinatra about this--just a very clear vision that doesn't work out because of the legalities. ![]() + Suez, one problem with the name "Town Squares" is despite the geography, we don't actually have many "towns" per se in SL. Altho, the counterpoint is, calling them such would reinforce community in the area. "Meeting Places" I understand, but not applicable to all. I'm leaving this one open. ![]() + Maybe ultimately, it won't be "info" in the conventional sense that's included. There'll be awhile to determine that. + Travis, any more specifics with your magic wand? Any particular directions? What could be explored? Those types of things! + Copper, I'm thinking that since you said that, there would be a leaning towards Linden (official) facilities that couldn't be done by Residents. Thus, they'd be unique and not redundant. Part of the benefit is providing official news to Resis who'd prefer not to go to the website. Granted, there's a lot that's still nebulous, but that's exactly why I'm here--to get ideas! + Amber OMG what a GORGEOUS piccie. Sorry to hear about the kissing booth mishap, but that's great! Lush colors, the seating is so cute... shopping tents? Anyone have visuals they wanna share? Pictures, 1000s of words! + Rose, yup... I'm hoping for lots of uniqueness. They shouldn't all be clones, because we now have direct TP in SL, so what's the point? Part of the challenge is clearly building them. The recent call for Resident Infohub contributions didn't net as many as we wanted to see, which is why I'm saying even though that deadline's past, we're still very, very receptive to ideas and possibilities as this takes shape. Maybe each one will get a makeover over the long haul but we'll focus on the few we know first. + Vivianne, I'll be in touch with you about this! BANG BANG! + Argent, those are good points... and exactly why I'm saying if there are landowners here who have land next to Infohubs, your views will help to shape what becomes: so what say ye? ![]() Yes, I'd like to see Resis set homes to any "Infohub" too! Definitely useful, that. Brainstorming on... + Smith, HOW DO YOU SUGGEST THIS IS DONE? Seriously, I can't force... but... a combo of ideas, like what Vivianne's been up about, those can be a powerful fusion. + Copper, maybe I should grab an old model and make it physical when delinking. Hrmmm. + Simone, you build, don't you? Did you make something like this? If so, let me see it! Uh... hey fat Elvis. @_@ Onwards, I'm going to let some of these ideas gel. If you have something you wanna express, say it! _____________________

Torley, the phrase "Town Square" came from the Lindens, not from me. All I did was parrot back in a dry and literal sense a phrase from the link you provide to a statement by Jesse Linden:
Originally Posted by Jesse Linden The new Infohubs are designed to be public spaces for use by the entire Second Life community. In the tradition of the town square or public commons, these local spaces will provide a central point of congregation and communication exchange between residents. We are committed to building traffic in these areas and giving the surrounding businesses and services the opportunity to benefit from their increasing use. "Meeting place" is a 10 cent version of the 100 dollar phrase "central point of congregation and communication" used by Jesse in that same quoted passage.\ The dry, bland, totally functional names of "Town Square" for a place that is to sever the function of a town square, and "Meeting Place" for a "central point of congregation and communication exchange between residents" are jokes, "Community Center" might sound nice. We have people coming in to SL that can't figure out to click on the Help menu when they need help. What do you suppose they make of "InfoHub"? So, I now propose we use Jesse's phrase in toto: rename the InfoHubs to "Central Points Of Congregation And Communication Exchange Between Residents", or for short, CPOCACEBRx. _____________________

Ah, the thing to remember is this is "in the tradition" of a "town square"--while not the same, we are taking cues. "Community Center" has a nice ring to it too, altho the acronym you suggested it rather weighty.

Troley you wanted pics ... here is a little idea of what I was talking about ... visual of a typical french village public place
![]() what would also be fun would be to make a regular treasure hunting, say one per week, hide the hints in the infohubs and the winner gets, for example, to spend an hour with the linden of the week, or get the opportinuty to have one of his building displayed in a infohub ... or any reward you could think of actually ![]() |

To get people to go to the infohubs you need to have something people want, but can only get, there. My idea is an official Linden Lottery - much like the California State Lottery. An important key to the idea is that the only dispensers of the $1L tickets will be at the infohubs. A portion of the proceeds from the lottery can go to pay for maintenance of the infohub and lottery system. People that buy a lottery ticket can, if they choose, text input the name of a charity (RL or SL) that they would like to see another portion (percentage?) of the lottery go to. Whatever is the highest ranked customer requested charity at the end of each lottery period will win the donation. And of course the winning ticket holder would get their portion. Thus ensuring it will be an American charity. Apart from this, I think the lottery is a good idea. _____________________

OOoh Ty for asking Torley!

I'd like a bulletin board like you'd find at the community grocery store where anyone can post and all posts are wiped once a week or something.
ALSO I love the lottery idea, but instead of giving to an American charity, why not give to an SL charity? Like the Foundation For Rich Content, for instance. =) Or some Linden cultural trust perhaps? Just thinkin' ... might as well benefit every SLer. _____________________

It appears that we can set our Home spots to any mainland Infohub now.
There is at least one Infohub in a mature sim, so folks might want to set their home spot to a Mature sim so that when they start the program they can speak freely about the slow rendering and the gray loading textures. Now, maybe they should replace the landmark dispensers at the OIs and HI that funnel every new user into the WA, and instead give them a choice of the WA or any of the InfoHubs. And at the InfoHubs, and the WA too, for that matter, they can put a scripted object for people who want help that would send an IM to the SL Volunteer group members who have opted in to be on the list of InfoHub based helpers. ( An SL volunteer should be able to easily go from active to inactive status on this list ) Then maybe people would have a reason to go to InfoHubs? Just an idea. _____________________

Didn't they use to give some little bonus for teaching mentor classes on Linden owned land like Stage IV?
Maybe they should try that on the InfoHubs. _____________________

Sample Notice for getting folks to infohub: "Some Linden" at the Lime Infohub, 4:00 to 4:30, - meet the people who make it happen! Radio Linden Live, DJ'd by Torley Linden, 7:30 - 8:00 - only at the InfoHubs! Want to let you hair down a bit and say what you really mean - wear some of those outlandish clothes that show too much for PG while you are meeting a Linden? Then hop out to the Maroon InfoHub, it's Mature - meet Bub Linden - he's not! He 'specially likes that see through shirts, gals. Suicide Girls - a Linden InfoHub exclusive! _____________________

Cohesion
02-09-2006 02:17
There have been a lot of wonderful ideas mentioned. The main thing I would like to see is a cohesive design to each individual hub. Right now they appear to be a mishmash of colors and objects. We often hear comment about how the mainland grid is cluttered and unpleasant. I would like to see the hubs become examples of what we can build using a theme for each, perhaps incorporating advanced, unique, or interesting build concepts, one per site. There could even be information available on how to actually create the concept presented. This does not have to restrict itself to houses but incorporate all aspects of Sl from wildlife, particles, textures, art, etc. Visual demonstrations are wonderful ways to learn and presented in a pleasing manner within unique settings would be great and also attract interest.

I would love to incorporate your train of thought here into the new Nova Albion Infohub we are building. Especially the part about the step-by-step instructions on how to build something similar. Chalk up one more feature going into that bad boy! _____________________

We can set our home spots to InfoHubs, we can hold events at InfoHubs (so it seems), but the object return limit appears to be 5 minutes. 5 minutes is not very long for a place you want people to visit and hang around at, is it? Am I reading something wrong? __________________ Alrighty, some of the InfoHubs are in Mature areas. What are rules on chat and dress and olbject content in these Linden owned, out in the public, gathering places in Mature areas? Also, I suspect that it might be good idea to put a "Stage 4" in one PG infohub and one Mature InfoHub, just to try and see if people might host a show and tell or a trivia event there because the look appeals to their sense of nostalgia. Re: Mature content, same general guidelines apply as in the Community Standards. I miss Stage 4 too. So explicit av sex and hard core porn would not be cool, you would have to take into account visiblity from nearby PG areas at the Mature InfoHubs - but - you can cuss and talk dirty, and not be in fear of an abuse report getting acted on because of "saying bad words", is that somewhat right? _____________________

That's a great idea. I personally would like to combine infohubs to create public areas, that people can rent for events. ![]() ![]() It appears that we can hold events at infohubs - when I go the secondlife.com events page, the infohubs are all listed. It had been a few months since I had tried that, at that time in the past there were only two or three places listed. Object return time is currently only five minutes. Torley says that change is in the works. In the meantime, they would be fine places for Question and Answer events, Trivia, anything that doesn't require keeping objects out for long. Or for 4 minute building contests. ![]() There are places to hold events in aplenty, I believe, on privately owned land, For free. For serving the purpose of getting people to visit the area around the InfoHubs, an obvious sort of event would be tours of fhe area or journeys from one hub to another. _____________________

A giant black shiny rectangle standing on end... maybe with stars in it ya! we could call it the black thing... no? um... Big black stary box? oooh I know I know, a monolith! And it could help to evolve SL players (hey if it worked on Europan space frogs in Space Odyssey, think what it can do for the average SLer!).
Hehe, sorry, kidding aside I actually do like the wildlife area. Maybe have residents submit wildlife for approval and inclusion so people have the chance to see one of their creatures wondering around at infohubs ![]() _____________________
