Its done intentionally every week to see how many of us will come back.. While we all sit here commenting about how pissed off or going crazy we are the Lindens are just sitting back with their coffee doughnuts and danish laughing and thinking how foolish we actulally are

These grid outages happen far too often, please take longer release updates!!!! 2, 3, 4 weeks even, not every Wednesday then have to keep fixing the problems right after.

So am I, just a pity they don't work correctly 85% of the time, and the company as a whole doesn't listen when told they don't. I feel sorry for Philip, he seems to be the kind of guy who wants it to be a good experience and I know this has to be frustrating for him, however my inkling is he gets kept in the dark as much as we do about the real goings on.

Well... I kinda feel for him too but his idea of basically letting his employees do whatever they want is a big mistake. And the constant rotations are actually hurting more than helping.

To quote Robin Linden:

""We will be making changes to the release process so the frequency of downtime should be reduced. We're also looking at ways we can deploy new features or fixes without taking down the entire grid. In the meantime, we sympathize with the difficulties the downtime caused and we apologize for any hardship you encountered.""

um...right... o.o <insert applause here>

Funny when I read this I started sneezing, and the sneezing sounded mysteriously like the term for what comes out of the south end of a northbound bull.

If you don't like they way they handle things then find another virtual world, or make your own. Its simple right?

Is it OK if I post in this thread, or is this just for all the astoundingly clueless non-techs who think the Lindens are doing this intentionally, or just sitting around twiddling their thumbs?

Feel free, but be prepared to get torn limb from limb - you are dealing with a lot of very pissed off people (both premiums and non-premiums who would probably pay if it were not for this situation NOT being an isolated instance). Some of us have tech knowledge, others have a lot of experience as alpha and/or beta testers, and others are having their ingame business (some of which are making them real money) seriously interefered with.

You pay to play, you really expect to be able to play most days out of the week when you have some spare time.
However, seems like damn near every morning at 7 o clock when I have time I can't log in. and then every damn day at whenever I take my lunch I can't log in because of the servers being down.

Come on now, when you pay for a service you kinda expect to get something out of the deal... Not even SOE was this bad, maybe a few times a month but not every freakin week.

By the way I know LL isn't doing this intentionally, but I script and program for a living. I'd have my ass handed to me on a plate if I let all the people in my company use a program that had bugs up the wazoo.
Really, it's simple, you test the heck out of the things that you implement or change. Sometimes it's difficult to get all of the really bad bugs out of the code but if there are bad bugs that you know are there (due to testing the heck out of it) you don't release it.

Funny you mention that. I've been tempted to go back to AW due to all the downtime here. But I still can't stand Goreans.

As for the other... as soon as I can take the classes and graduate....

Now go run your mouth to someone who hasn't been dealing with LL's crap for a year and a half. Don't let my reg date fool you.

I have wondered this myself, how much does all this down time really hurt those that are in game as a business? I mean they take away traffic, incentives so money is sales. No one can buy if grid is down. ?? so does it really affect the big business ppl much.?

Grid down AGAIN!!!
08-09-2006 15:33
Well, this seems to become a weekly if not almost daily thing from SL AGAIN. Stop with the "updates" and fix what is broke before moving on. I am all for progress and improvement but for heavens sake!! make sure all other bugs are COMPLETLY resolved BEFORE making any. The last two updates have been horrible!! Freezing up and lag is HORRIBLE. Fix what is broken before moving on PLEASEEEEE. When is this going to stop or get better, and not by shutting the grid down SEVERAL times in a week just to "repair" something?

I don't think so. I think they are in that situation where you walk through a patch of mud - first one shoe is sucked off, leaving you standing on one leg, wobbling. Finally you put it down in the driest looking patch, and your foot sinks with a horrible squelch. So you try and move the other - only to have the other shoe sucked off!
Now you are standing on one leg again and you KNOW wherever you put it down it's going to be messy.
Then you remember the muddy patch wouldn't be there if you'd bothered to fix that leaky hosepipe...

Think we are all sick of it
08-09-2006 15:34
Basically I think that what we are all saying is that we are sick and tired of the patches every single weds., but used to it. So you think by now, LL would know what they are doing, this is not a new game, and to continue to use rolling log outs and shutting down the grid to fix there screw ups is old! At least it is by me! Come on guys..get your crap together!

Frequency of updates less often is possible
08-09-2006 15:36
half of us are pretty excited to complain about the down time, while the others are genuinely upset. You have to admit there is some drama here and it's almost like a great event in it's own right.

Anyhow I think it's important to note that while LindenLabs would like to have fewer updates with more quality, they are basically stuck with issues they need to resolve which are of a serious nature. This prevents them from holding off a month at a time for releases. (In my opinion anyway)..

I believe once the critical issues have been resolved they will fall back to a once a month update and actually get a test server for this stuff. But they are unfortunately in a position where they need to stablize the product before they can do that.

In otherwords I think there are very good reasons why the pace of updates hasn't slowed down.

Ive been here for just about a year, and why there has been some meh updates, they aren't that bad in the grand scheme of things. If everyone thinks they do a bad job with QA then hop on the preview grids and help.

I file bug reports, preview on the preview grid, and have never had a problem with them listening. Sometimes it takes a while, but they do listen.

Not all of us are clueless. Some of us do have the knowledge.

And there is no need to be insulting to those who don't.

There's also no need to fill the forums with countless threads to accuse the Lindens of not listening, not testing, not doing anything, not fixing bugs, etc. This is a very massive and complex 'game' where thousands of users can write their own code. Of COURSE there are bugs! But to accuse the Lindens of not caring and not doing anything about it shows that the poster has not bothered to read the bug fix lists, not bothered to read updates from LL, not bothered to check out the preview grid (proven by someone posting that a backup grid would be a good idea). These people would rather just BITCH.

So yeah, after seeing this from the uninformed masses every time something goes wrong, damned right I am going to be insulting. Sure, it's frustrating for some when the grid is down - but how do you think it makes those of us who do know how unpredictable massive networks can be feel when we log into the forums to see endless new threads about the same goddamned thing?

Why not take this time to download the preview client. Go looking for bugs.
