Why cant they just have updates every month or somtihng? and have the monthly update tested the hell out of it and tested and fixed some more instead of just spitting out worse and worse versions..

But that would be the right thing to do.....

This is why I refuse to pay.
I have my account info on file, and will buy L$ if needed, but I will not pay just to have my account...period.

This is probably a stupid question, but don't they have a backup server that they can debug minor issues on, and then take the main grid down when they've identified the problem?

And this is new how? I keep waiting for this announcement from LL:

" Starting yesterday we are now scheduling downtime from Mon-Sun, 12:01am-11:59pm...all stipends will also be removed at this time. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."

I don't think LL is capable of doing an update without taking the grid down shortly after to fix something they screwed up.

Seriously - an it's not like I have a modeling gig today, in about two hours, that I simply can't miss.

Oh wait, maybe I do.

because that is actually the PROPER way of doing things, and it makes too much sense.

I think alot of the updates this week have been because of the exploit bounty. Alot of serious flaws have been found recently.

To quote Robin Linden:

""We will be making changes to the release process so the frequency of downtime should be reduced. We're also looking at ways we can deploy new features or fixes without taking down the entire grid. In the meantime, we sympathize with the difficulties the downtime caused and we apologize for any hardship you encountered.""

um...right... o.o <insert applause here>

Communication
08-09-2006 15:21
Just a couple points of note:

1. I understand the need for maintenance, particularly after an update. Last night, when assets were being lost, Linden Labs did a great job at notifying everyone right away (albeit a sixty second warning), then closing down and reopening the grid very quickly. Great job, Linden Labs!

2. However, why on earth was no message sent about the grid going down again today, after the update was over and logins were open? Even a 60 second warning would have been appreciated, so individuals could save their work and depart. I'm just glad I was able to copy some code I was working on. (Admittedly, I probably should not have been working on it at all, knowing the way updates go.)

So here's both a horrah and a boo to Linden Labs. However, in the interest of standards and better appeasement of the SL community, I'd like to suggest that when the grid is intentionally taken down, that a warning to all current users be mandatory before closing the grid: a minimum of one minute, but preferably five or ten minutes.

I'm grateful to Linden Labs for the tools they've offered us in Second Life, so I'm not going to complain too much. ;) But please consider my suggestion, as communication is terribly important.

Thank you.

And they know we know they know it

I'm half tempted to drop by LL in SF someday and plop down my 20+ year resume along with certificates for employee of the month awards, and production and accuracy figures from the two jobs in high tech I supervised. In BOTH supervisory positions I attained an unheard of first pass yield and it was done by doing this litle thing called "TESTING"...thoroughly and completely, or product did NOT go out the door. Any employees I caught fudging on test reports to get done fast were looking for a new job the next day.

Same reason I gave them back my premium account. I can earn enough Ls in world without having to buy them for what little I need. They screwed the pooch when it came to me. I'm not paying for something I can't use 2 days out of 3.

All these people ever do is apologize. Ill trade the apology for you guys to actually do something productive...like maybe actually fix a problem.

Is it OK if I post in this thread, or is this just for all the astoundingly clueless non-techs who think the Lindens are doing this intentionally, or just sitting around twiddling their thumbs?

An IDEA
08-09-2006 15:23
Instead of them letting us think we can maybe play SL 6.5 days a week. I think they should just set it up that we can play say 2 days a week. Then maybe just maybe those 2 days will work great. Maybe fewer dissapointments. I say heck break it up we will play SL on a wednesday and saturday, What you say LIndens think we could get 2 GOOD days out of you a week.

agreed, this is all very frustrating... the idea of a back up test grid I like. but it's costly to LL and won't happen, especially when they have the main grid to experiment with :)

i think after they fix this, we may be ok till next wednesday... (excluding new exploits)...
the new updates restoring in this newer version I like... they seem to be listening to at least some of our griping about controls and practicality... we cant have everything but lets be thankful they brought back some of the better features we all had grown to love and have the option of muting SFX... that i like :)

cya everyone on the grid in about 2 hours :)

So am I, just a pity they don't work correctly 85% of the time, and the company as a whole doesn't listen when told they don't. I feel sorry for Philip, he seems to be the kind of guy who wants it to be a good experience and I know this has to be frustrating for him, however my inkling is he gets kept in the dark as much as we do about the real goings on.

Not all of us are clueless. Some of us do have the knowledge.

And there is no need to be insulting to those who don't.

It's getting annoying now Lindens, TEST and FIX your bugs first before releasing it, letting us enjoy ourselves for a few hours and then throw down the grid AGAIN.

Seriously, i'm very happy that you bring us SL but you really should find better ways to do updates cause this bugs the shit out of everyone.
