Ball joints are one thing but what if someone wants to make a door? Ball joints aren't necessary and why cause unnecessary physics load? A specific way to limit rotation is needed for a hinge.

You will be missed. So it seems. The challenge now is finding an apt method. Something that will call attention to this injustice. Something permanent and shocking. I need something that will leave my avatar in pieces. Are these threats just a cry for help? Maybe. See, I've been developing a business strategy for months now, involving one of my otherwise useless machines and two very specific, expensive, and strategically juxtaposed pieces of land. If joints go away for good, my business is destroyed in seed stage and I'm ruined. Who wouldn't jump out of a tall building? Just my luck that's the least likely solution of them all. The thing is, joints are still in game and remain functioning. Any that I take from my inventury still works. They're just absent from the Tools menu. Is there a keyboard shortcut I can use for now when building to add joints? Is it obvious I'm in a combination of withdrawal and denial? Yes, I'm in derawal. |

Please Do not remove the ability to make joints.
03-20-2006 21:52
Joints are vital. Yes you have completely scrapped my latest ship design by removing Joints. Joints are complicated, granted, and judging by the poor education system in the United States it is obvious why this dumber generation would "GIVE UP" when they cannot understand what is beyond their comprehension because of the fact that they have been dumbed down by the powers that be. Perhaps people get what they deserve, but I for one do not want to stand idly by and allow it to happen to Second Life. We need joints, I would like to see Linden Labs put forth the effort to make them better than before and allow them in some advanced menu like the "Debug" menu. Now if you disagree that is your right, it will not, however change my opinion. Do you realize that with joints in the proper location you can make gears revolve, you can make merry go-rounds go around, you can make Flying ships with physics with up to 62 prims. YES YOU CAN!
PLEASE BRING JOINTS BACK! Mark Coffee |

Alternatives, please?
03-20-2006 22:01
All this is shocking to me because I thought everybody else played like me...camp out in a sandbox and make joint-intensive machines. Apparently I'm the only one.
That makes my requirements in an alternative to SL unique. I don't care about the social aspects of SL. I just want a platform upon which to make machines that mimic reality and then test and optimize them. And then give them steroids. Is there an alternative for me? Even if just a software-based platform (which I assume I can play without hybrid human/cartoon characters endlessly asking "what u got their LOL?" only to leave before I can tell them)? n other words, what can I do to scratch my building itch????? |

Or, perhaps, they actually WERE fucking broken for the vast majority of uses, unstable, and prone to crashing sims. Let's not make sweeping generalizations to the whole of SL because you lost your joint toys for six months. [/QUOTE] _____________________

The best tool I know of for creating machines is SolidWorks. It's a CAD program though. _____________________

To Joint or not to Joint
04-05-2006 03:16
Lose the joints! I've just done a whole load of scripting to create joint behaviour in non-jointed prims, and if joints come back I'm not going to be able to prance around saying "aren't I a smart-arse" (yup - I'm English).
On the other hand, one of the later comments re: a standalone sim for building is a suggection I posted directly to lindenlabs. I'd love a mini sim to run locally on my machine while offline to build and try out scripts without (a) upsetting others when my WMDs go haywire, and (b) getting some guy waving his SL privates in my face and asking if I fancy it. (i.e. a profession SL development tool would be great). Cheers Rene |

So did joints get removed after all? I'm trying to make a second version of my swinging punching bag (it works with safezone), but I can't find the feature for joints in the menu

Yes, joints are gone but you can create a pseudo-physical punching bag by linking a flex prim (cylinder in this case) to a non-phantom root prim and the flex prim should remain solid and bumpable...but you'll need a script to "jerk" it and have the flex effects look like the bag was hit or something.

The option in the menu is removed but joints do still works, so you could if you wish just mod your first version.
![]() But most likely at some point they will not support joints at all anymore, and all your jointed object will cease to work. _____________________

joint+flex

If I take a simple jointed object, and apply the flex feature, it goes poof!
I got things going in plans. I luckily have a copyable piece of joint junk that I modify for what I need. I'll buy any joints hanging around. |

This has likely been said already but I'm in no mood to read 11 pages of comments right now to find out...heh
But I say leave them in until the next version of Havok is ready to be rolled out and THEN remove them, thus replacing them with the new and (hopefully fully functional) joints as well as the ability to create them again instead of trying to carefully copy existing ones without them sailing off into nowhere land, as we must do now if we want to create anything with a joint in it. |

Removing the joints would break some stuff but if it's needed go ahead. I only own 1 thing that i know uses them. A Dr Robotnic (Eggman) Vehicle from the old sonic games, that uses a ball on a chain swinging around it. I can easily contact the creatior once the new join system is in place and request them to update it. I once used a swing set that used joints, but i kept finding that the swings would go offworld and break from the main section. So i decided to script a non physical swing set. Isn't as good but its ok.
