SL Insurgency: When/Where/How Will It Strike Next?

Its been a relatively quiet 4 days. We've all been able to enjoy SL without any major insurgency interruptions. As you may recall, insurgents successfully brought the grid down twice last weekend. Hopefully, LL has been busy rooting out the insurgency and developing contingency plans to maintain order should another attack occur.

Any predictions on when/where/how the next insurgency attack will take place?

My guess is that they will try to strike again over the weekend. From an insurgent's point of view, its probably the best time to strike because LL is probably the least staffed on the weekend. Sunday seems especially vulnerable.

I'm not sure what the next attack will be though. Most likely some lame self-replicating, pushing attack.

What say you, the community?

They tend to center around weekends. However, the inexplicable region restarts the other night are, according to a little birdy, hotfixes to possibly prevent Grey Goo. As indicated by tests, rezzing now seems to be throttled.

That you have a manifestly high degree of interest in such matters.

I expect that Timothy McVeigh had a higher than average interest in amonnium nitrate. ;)

(this is a joke, not a veiled accusation, nor is it comparing RL bombing to grid DoS attacks, offer void where prohibited; use of this toaster in the shower may be harmful or fatal)

You have a very childlike conception of "insurgency," Mr. Bergman.

Heh. I wish I could say these were pro jobs, but it doesn't take much to down a sim, sadly. *puts on halo and walks away*

Uh, well, actually, as I recall, it was more some lamer script kiddies brought down aspects of the grid. Insurgents are generally folks with *something* to fight for, the attacks you reference were the pathetic efforts of losers.

But 'insurgent' is the buzzword of the month. Don't correct Jamie, she might get annoyed an unleash... blinging bullets or something at you.

Depends on your viewpoint, I guess. I view the insurgency in Iraq much the same way as your last line - pathetic efforts of losers. The US will win, what are they thinking?!

No, she'd shoot you with someone else's gun, and then charge you for the bullets, even though they were created open perms back in Beta.

This kind of hogwash is so old hat. When will you communists give it up?

Well I'm never going to ask your advice on a land war in asia, that's for sure.

Putting this aside, though, you are making a grand category error here.

People who crash a networked entertainment service are not remotely similar to people who kill for the express purpose of unseating a government. They are not similar in kind. They are not similar in degree. They just aren't alike. Calling the gridcrash goons insurgents is as logical as calling them spiced ham.

I have no doubt that you have. But so what? I'm in SL for the fun. Not for the money. If I wanted big money, I'd just work more IRL.

In point of fact, they did NOT "bring the grid down" -- they created enough problems that the LINDENS SHUT THE GRID DOWN THEMSELVES. Big difference, dear -- one is someone blowing up your house -- the other is kicking everyone out so the cleaning crew can clean up the mess they made.

And, since every business that deals with public demand and entertainment knows that such things get really busy over the weekends, LL probably puts MORE sysadmins and trouble-chasers on duty on the weekends (while the OFFICE staff gets to go home), kinda like how your local big Blockbuster or MacDonald's gets really busy on Friday night and they have 6-8 people to deal with the weekend busy period.

I'm wondering why the Lindens don't ust disable that type of script in the servers -- anytime ANYTHING that's scripted tries to call on such a command, it's countermanded by the Linden servers.

Cos those commands are used by lots and lots of non-grid attacking things.

SL has yet to make me rich beyond my wildest dreams... which is what drew me here in the first place - to live as a free Capitalist. So far, the place remains a Communist stronghold.

So, which one is it?
