From: Wendel Gascoigne You seem to have tried roleplaying and not understood it. There is no need to grow out of it. Neither should it become just a way to hide yourself. It is a form of expression. In a fantasy game, I also play a grumpy dwarf Paladin, somewhat stereotypical but FUN. I could simply kill things but I choose to inject some character in my creations. I understand role-playing QUITE well, actually. I role-play smurfs every so often. However, I'm not role-playing facets of myself but, simply, characters in a 1980s cartoon. Slight difference... From: Wendel Gascoigne Also, please Eep, learn to read. Try to stop feeling so smug about yourself and pay attention to others for a change. My sub and the lady my alt is in love with are the SAME PERSON and have since become my real life wife. OK? No preying on anyone here. No cloak and dagger. You have been ranting about NOTHING. You never made the connection between your wife being your sub on your "master" account and the lady you are "devoted" to on your alt. Does that mean you have no other subs on your "master" account? From: Wendel Gascoigne I hope you are enjoying making a fool of yourself though. And glad for you you grew out of roleplaying, it's obviously no big loss to roleplayers all over the world. Look in the mirror, MPD boy.

My wife is both my partner and sub and the girl my alt is timidly in love with on another account. And no, I have no other subs. So take your preconceptions elsewhere. We are obviously never going to see eye to eye. You do seem to enjoy roleplaying the obnoxious part of you more than others. So I'm done talking to you. Wendel

In order to properly skew the results of this poll I suggest that those with multiple accounts, especially those with multiple accounts created since 6-6-6, answer the poll with each of their accounts.

From: Eep Quirk People who hide behind alts are pathetic--especially when they manipulate others. Get psychological counseling... Just try to relax.

From: Angel Fluffy The problem with alts is that, by nature, the only advantage (that I can see, anyway) over using your normal account for something is privacy. You forgot some more reasons. More stipend money (premium accounts), more land allocation, to fill out the three member requirements in a group -> one reason for that is to get the bonus tier for group held land. None of those are griefer reasons, or stalker reasons. And likely far larger reasons a lot of people have alts. My boyfriend and I have three premium paid accounts between the two of us, entirely for business reasons. So there.

I have made a number of alts recently just for gag purposes (funny names and junk). Duno whos idea it was to add the names "Television, Replacement, wood, and Twin" though. XD

I started a free account not understand clearly the name chosen was actually the name thtat I would be stuck with forever to all in SL. Basically it SUCKED. I still stuck through for a week to see that I loved SL. So instead of upgrading to premium. I created a premium acct from scratch. So yes I have an alt. But I could also see several reasons to have an alt. First would be the total lack of privacy in SL. The friends list should be revised so that it is not linked to mapping. It is so easy that a jealous freind can buy a radar for $L150 map you and then see exactly who you are talking to at all times. Why not have the freinds list so we just more easily IM or TP etc? "Hey, whacha doin? Cool, TP me" for example. Freinds in real life don't need to know that you ran down the street to 7-11. The other reason I could possibly see is if you were like a famous designer. Wouldn't it get old that everywhere you went people came up to talk to you because of your name. I could see a desire to get out every now and then and just meet people and talk.
Just my $L.02 worth

From: Eep Quirk I made one just to test if free alts (which I then later found out applied to basic accounts) was true. With no age verification, what's the point of having the teen grid anymore? Hell, what's the point of having abuse reports since the idiot griefer can simply switch to an alt? Ridiculous...LL's mentality seems to get dumber and dumber all the time... They're getting really desperate to get BIGNUMS for the corporate sponsors.

I've got one "alt". Actually I guess this is my "alt" account, since I made it second. This was all before 6/6/06 though. Originally I made an account but I was kind of unhappy with the last name as there really wasn't any names I liked left. And then a few days later I saw the last name Misfit was available, so I signed up again with this account. Since I was still new, I didn't have much inventory anyway that I couldn't transfer or replace. Now my original account is pretty much empty and I just use it for groups, tier, and to fiddle with and test things when I want some privacy. I've considered making a free alt or two since 6/6/06 for roleplaying (especially since I'd learned about the rp features of the Luskwood jogauni avs), but just haven't had the time to devote to anything like that since I've been working on making my t-shirts nearly non-stop. I don't see anything wrong with having alts as long as they're not used for griefing or any sort of fraud. They can have some good uses, like for tier, meeting group membership requirements, roleplaying (even "different aspects of yourself" , or just for privacy to relax/experiment/explore/etc.

Just over 200 people hold nearly 700 accounts according to the poll up to this point. At that rate more than 170,000 of the registered residents are alts.

My Favorite Alt Incident was the one who was discovered in a group, to have at least three alts present, and actually started arguing with Herself on Two different computers Trying to convince us she was more than one person.
Pathetic really.
I've never had an Alt, I've always been me,, to the point where people from OTHER On Line game systems recognize me Immediately when they come to SL. I'm Confident,, Proud of who, and what i am, and have no need to Hide myself behind endless Masks.
Do what's right for You, For me, I'm content Just being Myself. I present More than enough Personality Facets to Interest or Intregue most people i meet, and i have no fear of exploring other new facets without the safety net of a new identity.
Angel.

Totally, Angelique. If you can't stand behind yourself, you're pathetic. People from Active Worlds recognize me in SL. Hell, I've used "Eep" since 1997 and long before that in newsgroups and BBSes (though I had a different name when I first started BBSing in 1991). I don't need to hide behind the facade of fakeness. If people can't like me for who I am, fuck 'em. Most people aren't worth it anyway.

You've been called a troll/humorless git pretty regularly by various people for the last decade. Amazing. Some folks grow out of it. You just keep plugging on. Bravo.

I only voted.. None. I have this one and that's more than enough for me. I'd rather not develope some kind of Linden induced Multiple Avi-Personality Syndrom, thank you very much. I tend to get sucked into altitis very easily and it's a pain to keep just ONE inventory organized!

I have 3 alts -- one is for my boyfriend's account (which he has used maybe 6 times in the year and a half he has had one), one is to handle money for my store, and another is to handle money for PXP.

From: Lewis Nerd Which I think is a bit of a shame. I may have some strong opinions which people disagree with me over, but there's a lot more to me - and I'm sure a lot of people would actually realise they had things in common with me if they took the time to look beyond the name and discover the person under it.
For example, I can vouch for him being a very talented nosepiper. I have pictures to prove it.
