If you've made alts since 6/6/6, how many and why have you made them?

I made one just to test if free alts (which I then later found out applied to basic accounts) was true. With no age verification, what's the point of having the teen grid anymore? Hell, what's the point of having abuse reports since the idiot griefer can simply switch to an alt? Ridiculous...LL's mentality seems to get dumber and dumber all the time...

two, so i can hold my land group together. With limits on the amount of groups we can belong to, i hate to ask a friend to make space for that for me. i never log on my alts though, too much bother trying to remember their passwords.

OK, here's what we do to drive the point home to LL that unverified free alts are stupid: make at least 100 alts and fill up one of its inventory with 10,000 items (preferably high-prim (1K per prim), multi-textured/-sound/-anim--whatever! crank up each prim's contents to the max). Then transfer that 10,000+ inventory to EVERY other alt. This should suck up so much space on the asset server that LL rethinks this idiotic plan.

The problem with alts is that, by nature, the only advantage (that I can see, anyway) over using your normal account for something is privacy. Ok, there may be some alts which are used for good privacy reasons (e.g. if your main account does so much business, you don't also want that you're "looking for sexy fun" in your profile because it scares off customers).... but I imagine that many alts are simply used to go to a location, or hang around a person, or do something that the person doesn't want associated with their main account.
Thus, having lots of alts indicates at best that someone is embarassed about what they're doing and doesn't want it know they're up to something. Ok there are valid reasons to do this - but the general philosophy behind alts, is, imho a bit negative. I can understand why LL encourages people to have them though - higher "number of active accounts" stats look *VERY* good to investors. Oh, and for this reason, I have no alts currently. I'm already known as the author of the guide to BDSM and Kink in Second Life.... really, that ought to give people the hint that I don't get embarassed easily ![]() |

Stupid investors, perhaps. Any REAL investor will research user count and see who is actually USING the product. Of course most investors are stupid anyway (which is why the stock market works since it's just a pyramid scheme).

Ok there are valid reasons to do this - but the general philosophy behind alts, is, imho a bit negative. Wow. So nice of you to generalise like that. How about for people who invest a bit of character in their avatars and have different alts to roleplay different personalities? I created 0 alts since the start of June. I don't create alts for the sake of it. But I have had 3 chars since about the time I joined. This is my main. I am partnered and a Master, play Tringo, hang out with my friends. I also have a shy character, a very big contrast to the Master facet of Wendel, who doesn't go out much and is devoted to a girl, but not partnered. And I have a guy who is careless and attachment free. He is a student, spends his time at building classes and just enjoys acquiring knowledge. He travels the grid and spends time learning, learning, learning. Those are all facets of my own personality, but I enjoy splitting them up between a few alts and focusing on different things when I play. None of them is a griefer. I just think that there is a lot of negativity focused at alts when there needn't be. Wendel |

You can't automagically be someone else--it's still the same root person underneath throughout ALL your accounts (alt or main). Are you sure? Look at why YOU use alts: multiple personality disorder. Does the girl you're "devoted" to with your "shy" character know you have alts (one of which is a "master" ![]() Puh-leaze, Wendel. There are plenty of legitimate reasons for getting an alt.
Like being able to wander round and enjoy all that SL has to offer, without getting people throwing crap at you because they lack the intelligence to separate the forums and the game, and are unable to distinguish the appropriate place to maintain debate. Lewis _____________________

And your wife is alright with you being a "master" on another account? Interesting relationship you have there... Erm... My wife is both my partner and sub and the girl my alt is timidly in love with on another account. Sure, we first started the second "couple" as a way to get some quiet time together once in a while, but it was interesting to see them evolve different personalities. yet it all happens under the same character and I don't need to hide behind the shell of an alt account to be myself. It's bad enough I have to hide behind my RL shell of an account (body, life)... Can we agree that you prefer a more rounded representation of yourself in SL, whereas others might enjoy a more roleplay based exploration of different personality facets? I don't think that not having alts is bad. But you seem to imply that having them is hiding, whereas I see them as something very different. Nothing wrong with having a different approach. At your expense? Maybe for you. Whatever tickles your funny bone. ![]() Again, my main point is that despite what you and Angel seemed to imply, alts do not have to be a way of hiding or something stemming from a negative sentiment of any kind. I'm not against alts, although I don't have any. I kinda like being me. I can definitely see some people wanting different characters though. Many use SL differently to me. Some like to roleplay, play at being something else, express different parts of themselves. It's SL, be and make whatever you will. The only thing I don't like, is when people post as an alt, something which they don't have the courage to say on their main account.
Actually, I thought Wendel's story was kinda cute. But hey, I'm in love, right now I think everything's sweet. So that would be none for me. _____________________

It's SL, be and make whatever you will. I couldn't agree more. ![]() The only thing I don't like, is when people post as an alt, something which they don't have the courage to say on their main account. And that I agree with too. Have the courage to stand behind your opinions. Otherwise, they are probably not worth spewing forth. To go back to the original topic, I don't feel motivated to create an alt after the change in registration because it wouldn't serve a useful purpose. Actually, I thought Wendel's story was kinda cute. But hey, I'm in love, right now I think everything's sweet. LOL! Floating on a cloud can do that to you. ![]() Wendel |

Lewis, if this is so for you, I think that sucks, honestly. I might argue with you here, but if I saw you in-world, I'd say hello and have a chat. You'd be surprised how many conversations start with "Oh... I've seen you on the forums" and go downhill from there. Which I think is a bit of a shame. I may have some strong opinions which people disagree with me over, but there's a lot more to me - and I'm sure a lot of people would actually realise they had things in common with me if they took the time to look beyond the name and discover the person under it. My alt is purely for a bit of peace. I don't plan to use it on the boards to "add weight" to an argument - as some do, or to harrass anyone. Just to pursue a second second life and seeing how people react to the same person, just under a different name. Lewis _____________________
