Only 1, because the name 'Diseased Poultry' was too tempting to pass up :) and to see just how easy the new signup is.

I made one so that I can hunt down Lewis Nerd's alt and throw stuff at him.

One, to see how easy it was and also for somebody to test product sales to, make sure the permissions are okay etc (I was thinking of getting an alt for that anyway - I'd be annoyed if I'd paid $10 before). Oh, and to dress up in silly costumes.

I made none! Of course, I'm a post-6/6/6 joiner, so it would be weird if I had...

I have not made any since the new system went into place. I meant to, tested the form and got sidetracked before finishing.

I've made a bunch of alts over my years here, and one since 6/6/2006.

The one I've made since 6/6/2006 was purely for humor, and I'm sure a ton of other people joined me as the last name "Wood" was available. :) Morning Wood, Sporting Wood, IveGotHuge Wood... who could resist?

I've made three alt accounts simply to separate money:
Commerce Leader: the SLBoutique bank account (now owned by the Electric Sheep Company)
SLConvention Control: for SLCC funds
Flip Assia: for charity work (Katrina fundraising and such)

I also created one for the RL company I work for, for when we train our field technicians in Second Life: Crompco Mechanique

In addition to my "Wood" account, I've got two others that were made for humorous purposes with funny names. I keep the inventories on all these alt accounts extremely light so they shouldn't have a negative impact on the various SL servers. They all server their business & fun purposes wonderfully. :)

Regards,

-Flip

Stupid investors, perhaps. Any REAL investor will research user count and see who is actually USING the product. Of course most investors are stupid anyway (which is why the stock market works since it's just a pyramid scheme).

Oh yes, I forgot... everyone but Eep Quirk is stupid. Here's a PSA to anyone else who forgot this fact.

Bezos? Idiot.
Omidyar? Moron.
Kapor? Peon.
Rosedale? 'tard.

It was Eep Quirk who founded Amazon, eBay, invented the spreadsheet, founded Lotus, created video streaming, CTO'd Real.com before it sucked, and founded Linden Lab. If you didn't realize this already, you're, well... stupid.

Regards,

-Flip

I haven't gone through with making any alts yet on the new system, though I have one halfway through the process - She will be used as a third member to stabalize groups formed for building work (so I can terraform land for a client who has no land group of their own), and to hold excess inventory that I just can't quite get myself to delete.

Prior to the change in alt creation, I created one alt, primarily to assist with building (like positioning pose balls in a client's building project), to test merchandise sales and item permissions, and for certain RP tasks.

I really have very little need for other alts...

And your wife is alright with you being a "master" on another account? Interesting relationship you have there... I know another couple in SL who the wife was allowed to have "SL cybersex" (avatar animation sex) with anyone she wanted, so long as there were no IMs (private chat)--go figure. After I asked her about it, and made some judgements about her relationship with her husband, her husband immediately came onto SL (he was monitoring her chat, apparently) and got pissed at me saying I didn't know anything about their relationship, etc. She has since stopped that SL lifestyle, interestingly. Perhaps I knew more about their relationship than he cared to admit... See below for more on 1st-impression judgement.

Why does your one personal experience (third hand at that) qualify you to make flip judgments about Wendel? As a personal friend of his, I can assure you that your spurious assertions couldn't be more wrong.

From: someone
All facts aren't necessary to judge. Judgement can change based on more facts, but the initial judgement (1st impression) is still viable, valid and can remain forever.

And judgment without sufficient facts is usually just stupidity dressed up in pompous clothing.

There are plenty of good reasons to have alts, but those reasons are all up to the individual. Unreasoning "Alt Paranoia" will do more damage to the culture of SL than free accounts can ever do.

I made one, because the asexual demon character I had rattling around in my head HAD to have a birthdate of 6/6/6.

I mean, please - it's perfect!

I made 1 alt, so I could run around without a titler and still have the proper name for one of my forms. (And make it obvious what the name is)

Ironically, now that it's all prepared, I don't know if I want to use it or not. x.o

When I first heard about alts, I didn't see their purpose and couldn't figure out why you'd want one. The idea kind of creeped me out, in fact. However, I now do have two alts.

One is a quiet gal who sits at the beach, listening to the calming sounds of the waves, while I putz around in GIMP. I like being in world, but I just want a little peace and quiet -- I hate putting off friends who IM me or want to go on an adventure (and, I never remember to put myself on BUSY mode). The other is a work in progress -- I went for a wacky name and am letting her evolve into a whimsical make believe creature -- she's showing me the way.

Neither of my alts get out much -- they have simple existences, livin' off freebies (tho I did buy one of them hair!), homeless and friendless, don't go to clubs, have taken vows of chastity. They are mostly vessels for me to explore creativity, have a little quiet time. I would never have them interact with my friends without full exposure of who they were -- they are certainly not spies!

Are you sure? Look at why YOU use alts: multiple personality disorder. Does the girl you're "devoted" to with your "shy" character know you have alts (one of which is a "master";)?

Puh-leaze, Wendel. You can't automagically be someone else--it's still the same root person underneath throughout ALL your accounts (alt or main). People who hide behind alts are pathetic--especially when they manipulate others. Get psychological counseling...

Okay, obviously the concept of roleplaying is over Eep's head. But it never ceases to amaze me how often in life, if someone can't understand something, they assume it's stupid, pathetic, evil, or whatever. I guess the more ignorant you are, the harder it is for you to realize there are things you don't understand, and you can't try to understand anything if you don't first admit that you don't...

"It's still the same root person underneath throughout"? Interesting myth, but I've met far too many people who are completely different at home than at work, at work than at school, at school than at the bar. Everyone who isn't mind-numbingly shallow has multiple personalities, in that sense. They adapt to whatever role they're currently in. "The real me" is a myth... you are what you do whenever you're doing it.

I've not created any since 6/6/6. The 2 I have were created some time ago for a few reasons. Its much easier to set up cuddles or make vendor photos with 2 avies, especially when they will do exactly what you tell them to do,... well, most of the time they will. :D LOL

Humor can go a long way. You should try it sometime; sure beats being a curmudgeon. Besides, I'm not the one calling the founder of Amazon, founder of eBay, inventor of the spreadsheet, and inventor of video streaming stupid. Your statements speak for themselves.

John Cleese engaged in quite a bit of junior-high-school-humor, as you choose to call it; I'm pretty sure he's a pretty intelligent guy, what with that Cambridge Degree and all!

I have not created any alts since LL lost their minds and did away with age verification. I did create one a few months before that for the sole purpose of being able to do what I want without a stream of IMs.

There is at least one very logical and benign reason that I know of and just about everyone who runs a business in SL creates an alt for this very reason.

In most RL jobs (granted not all of them) when you go home you no longer have to deal with things concerning your work. Thats not the case in SL, despite what you put in your profile you will still get the "I'm sorry, I know its past your hours but..." IMs. So my alt is there as a way for me to "clock out" and not deal with business issues for a little while.

I used to role-play AD&D, Cyberpunk, and some Palladium when I was in high school and college, but I grew out of it. I don't need to role-play another character when I have enough to worry about role-playing my TRUE character. I understand role-playing and why some people feel the need to do it (low self-esteem, external gratification, need for attention, etc). Role-playing is also a way to express oneself, but I draw the line at not letting other people know who you truly are behind the character--especially when it involves emotions like Wendel's "master" character preys on. But, then I have a problem with the whole Gor/BDSM scene anyway so...

The key difference is that, in real-life, role-playing is MUCH less annonymous than when role-playing online.

Oh I know humor, Flip. I simply know INTELLIGENT humor--there are many levels of humor. Which are you?

Um, when did I call such people stupid? Perhaps you're inferring from when I called investors stupid. However, just because someone is stupid doesn't mean they can't con money out of others.

Who? <shrug> A degree doesn't mean you're intelligent; it just means you know how to conform and don't mind wasting money on a piece of paper.

You seem to have tried roleplaying and not understood it. There is no need to grow out of it. Neither should it become just a way to hide yourself. It is a form of expression. In a fantasy game, I also play a grumpy dwarf Paladin, somewhat stereotypical but FUN. I could simply kill things but I choose to inject some character in my creations.

Also, please Eep, learn to read. Try to stop feeling so smug about yourself and pay attention to others for a change. My sub and the lady my alt is in love with are the SAME PERSON and have since become my real life wife. OK? No preying on anyone here. No cloak and dagger. You have been ranting about NOTHING.

*sigh*

I hope you are enjoying making a fool of yourself though. And glad for you you grew out of roleplaying, it's obviously no big loss to roleplayers all over the world.
