Too bad Philip doesn't know how to complete his post before hitting the Submit button.
"Currency purchases on the Lindex for Q1 2006 totalled $743M Linden Dollars, meaning" and that's where it ends. _____________________

Robin's post will likely include a phased schedule that'll reduce dwell payments over the next few weeks.
I'm shocked that they've realized the need to cap an incentive program. Perhaps future ones will be initiated within defined timeframes so that they can be effective for a while, then ended before they become so gamed that they're destructive to the population and the wora'uld economy. Kudos to you Linden types. _____________________

More malls, fewer parks...
04-17-2006 10:55
And SL is already turning into one mall after another, with half the new public sims being built around stores... now they pull the plug on dwell. The race to the bottom continues.

so has dwell gone... is this the end of camping chairs and there ilk.... hooray.. And a huge blow to all private sims in general. I wouldn't be suprised if this will kill everything except residental(land rental) sims. I can also see this change creating alot of resentment towards basic members that don't have much money to spend. Without dwell, anyone thats not activley spending money is a burden on the sim. I can imagine the nasty fallout if this is true.. |

I'm shocked that they've realized the need to cap an incentive program. "Capping" it would mean "limiting the payout". Not "eliminating the payout". I'm not at all shocked that Linden Labs remains incapable of designing en economic simulation that behaves like a real economy, with all the factors that keep an economy stable and productive. |

Maybe, but they're also getting flexible prims and llHTTPRequest() which can be used to add new and exciting features to their facilities to attract and retain consumers in an ever evolving industry. I don't know what the result of this is going to be, not in detail, but the end of DI and the end of reputation bonuses didn't do any good... and led to negative consequences. This will work no better. |

The plan seems to make it ever more painfully evident that SL is not a game (in the meaning of entertainment diversion from real life) but a business platform. With dwell gone, I agree, the number of social gathering places will declone, probably quite rapidly.
In the end, all I can really see is SL becoming a gigantic grid of strip malls and a few houses where all people do is cyber all day. With no place to gather on social grounds, that's all I can see happening. Really, the Linden sandboxes are the only social venues that will continue to exist relatively painlessly. I wonder how long it'll be before they nix those too. |

They didn't "cap" it, they're killing it. "Capping" it would mean "limiting the payout". Not "eliminating the payout". For the record, periods are placed before closing quotation marks at the end of a sentence. _____________________

Well now the awful forum lag monster is doubling posts. This is most disconcerting. How are we supposed to insult each other effectively with double postings?

With dwell gone, I agree, the number of social gathering places will declone, probably quite rapidly. I hope they don't really think it. SL has to be entertainment as well. Without customers, it can't be a business platform. And what brings the customers is entertainment value. Why buy a fancy outfit and prim hair if there's nowhere to show it off anymore? It looks like the SLCC Box Office will be getting lots of use rather quickly ![]() |

And while I'm here... what the hell's up with the forum? I just took around 5 mins to post that 3 word reply. If it were running and slower it'd be going backwards!

My speculation would be the true worry about the inflation comes from how it impacts premium accounts. As a fairly new person to SL (account is old but have not have not really used it until recently) there doesn't seem to be a point to getting a premium account currently if you have no interest in owning land.
$10 US used to purchase currency: $3000L $10 US Premium account stipend: $2000L ($500L a week right?) Thus I'd rather buy the $10 US worth once a month rather than pay Linden directly thus they only get income from me as a user indirectly through other peoples land fees. For users like me the only way to attract direct income would be to either increase the stipend (and thus devalue the currency more) or make money tighter and drive US<->Linden prices up. Another thing: At $1900 + $199 a pop for sims how the hell are people bankrolling anything but strip malls? Is LL smart enough to host unique sims for free or at a dramatic discount? Or am I missing something? ![]() |

ok... let me get this straight:
In RL: "rightsizing" = "firing people" "width-enhanced" = "fat" "values voter" = "right wing nutjob" "progressive" = "hippie" "underemployed individual" = "bum" In SL: "entertainment" = "free moneys" "events" = "free moneys" ... Do I have that right? I just wanna be sure. |

Well yes, let's introduce cultural variations. What I meant was cap in the gangsta sense of shooting at someone with the intent to kill. So I did mean kill in the first place right?
But I'll still rather trust people's general intelligence over "perfect" grammar and semantics. _____________________

I give SL six months before theres nothing left for anyone to do except malls (selling stuff nobody can afford to buy) and *.ingo stuff.
I do wonder what planet LL are living on, and whether they actually understand how people play their game, rather than their idealistic dream world. Instead of 'spreading the love' round the office, how about showing a little 'love' to the residents who treat SL as entertainment rather than a real life income? Lewis _____________________

Lewis yes. they should make all accounts free, all land free, and give people L$1000 a month and run Linden Lab for "feelgood" instead of money. They should hire "volunteers" and live in a co-op, and grow organic produce in a dome to feed themselves. |

With everything seemingly priced from $300L to $3000L a pop costing weeks worth of stipend money thats already the case for many players. I myself view it as a game where I'm willing to spend like $10-$12 a month tops to entertain myself but strip malls and gambling are not entertaining. |

Instead of 'spreading the love' round the office, how about showing a little 'love' to the residents who treat SL as entertainment rather than a real life income? You mean the ones who think that spending ten bucks a month is too high a price to pay for funs? Or the ones who have broadband and high-end computers but can't afford spending ten bucks a month for funs. |
