This is the first I've heard of educational groups getting their own last name. You'd thnk that sort of thing would be mentioned somewhere on the website. Maybe it has, and I just missed it.

But I assume this is just another thing Not For Peons.

And therefore we don't even need to know about it, either.

I quoted part of the CSL FAQ wiki a few posts back about them getting a unique last name.

OK, I looked at it again, Nimrod. I didn't realize you were quoting from something official.

(And what is CSL?)

P.S. Does this mean the Suicide Girls are educational?:)

Who's going to get FIC as a last name first then?

All FIC members will automatically get their last name turned into FIC so they will all be exposed soon.

How about groups who are flat-out gifted 10,000sm of land for their group? At least one of the groups listed in this thread were 'feted' in that way. *becomes a sh*t-starter*

It may not be too shocking to you but it just shows that capitalism is just like communism (dictatorial communism anyway--not TRUE communism) and can quickly lead to corruption.

Uh. Okay.

Or it can lead to mutually beneficial business arrangements.

This also includes sharing and buying accounts...

Anyway, Enabran and I need GOP as a last name, who do we cut the check to?

I think we need Ken Mehlman, actually, to cut that check. I'll look through my pile of snail mail here for the last RNC money-beg letter and see if there's a number we can call.

Oh, hoho, what am I thinking. They're not going to accept any GOP cash.

/me shakes his fist, muttering "San Francisco..."

Probably one of her schemes to get more first land.

In view of your self-confessed crime I am very surprised that you should slander another resident in this way without evidence.

The Campus: Second Life program has always had a different last name for each group of students from its inception, though I don't think they pick the last name - the last names have not been indicative of the particular schools, they were just a way of associating the group together. This is something very different. In addition to allowing Anshe to have a custom last name, I am curious why they didn't enforce it actually being a name in the format of all other names - an abbreviation for a last name just looks stupid in relation to the rest. Now, again, how do the rest of us go about getting custom last names please?

Yes, it would provide a good way of changing people's names so that when they got married in sl, they could share the same surname.

Which can lead to disparate treatment of other customers/consumers. No thanks.

Where is it written that a business must treat its customers in an eglitarian way? A business may choose to do so or not, and you are free to choose to patronize a business that does so, or not to.

Last thing I heard Pathfinder Linden was in charge of or charged with the Campus Second Life program, he should be reachable at pathfinder@lindenlab.com.

I suspect that any business with enough dough to spend can get a last name created. There might be some need to provide a sound reason, but I bet the money is sound enough reason.

I wonder how much it is?

Indeed. I hope LL doesn't turn into such a business... Greed can easily get in the way. I hope Phillip doesn't lose his vision/dream of SL being open-source and usable by anyone--if that even IS his dream...

Even with a company like Linden Lab, I'd expect some bending of "rules" with large cash customers. I.E. if we accept that many of the current limits in SL are in order to prevent grief, then someone interested in doing a Stagecoach Island-style project could very well be given a "grid" with those limits removed. Someone wishing to purchase a large number of accounts at once for a purpose may very well be allowed to tag them all with one name. None of these things seem unreasonable to me.

Given a private grid with certain features is one thing; doing things that affect everyone just to please a certain person/company is another thing.

As for name "tagging", I don't have a problem with that so long as it's made known to the public and doesn't count towards the unique user count. I'd also like detailed stats on how the user count is calculated.

Why? What's the point of wanting to know? If the number of unique users is drastically lower than the grid population (which i'm sure it is) will you do a victory dance? Who cares?
