What is wrong with people? Why are there so many bad folks?

I am often disheartened by how bad human beings are. How greedy, selfish, uncaring, cruel and dishonest.
It is a day-to-day common happening in almost every walk of life these days.
Sure, there are good folks, and most of them get the shaft by the bad ones time and time again.
One of the good folks, Haver Cole, recently bought a sim, that she is generously sharing with friends and people she knows.
In preperation, we moved a silly, tongue-in-cheek club from a chunk of land she owns on the mainland, and she went to sell this land to herself, in order to ungroup it.
As she was preparing to do so, she put in the price of $1, and thought she had set it to sale to only herself, but low and behold, a land baron with a script swooped in instantly and bought it.
Now it was no doubt a mistake on Haver's part, but the keyword here is MISTAKE.
She, of course, politely IM'd the person and explained that she was just selling it to herself. And being the greedy, uncaring bastard that he is, this person responded with what amounted to "tough luck". He refused to sell it back.
He is another script-using land baron that cares only about his wallet. From my discussion with him, he has proven to be just another heartless waste of good air.
Why do folks act like this? They know it's not right, yet justify it and probably sleep very well at night.
Was it ok according to LL's rules or the parameters of Second Life? Sure..probably. But we all know it still wasn't the "right" thing to do.
It's happened in the past many times, and will probably happen in the future many more. But I couldn't help expressing the contempt and dismay I feel for such small, rotten people and their small, rotten acts.
If anyone would like the name of this less-than-reputable land baron and his business, feel free to IM me in-world.

Of course there is right and wrong, and most of us have a great compass for it, whether we choose to follow it or not. You do others harm for no reason but your own personal gain = wrong You do folks good deeds for no other reason than to help them and make them feel better = right There are soooo many world-wide examples of clear, black and white, rights and wrongs. Folks that deny that are just justifying their own bad behavior.

There are some people who are somehow missing that little voice in their heads that tells them that they are doing something wrong. They have no ability to empathise with other human beings and for them as long as they are getting what they want then no one else matters.
I really don't think there is a cure for the disease of not having a concience but we can hold out hope that eventually the karma they build up gets them in the end.

tough lessons last the longest...
08-03-2006 22:46
Sad to say but SL is a game, and some ppl do play a bit dirty..i too learned this lesson the hard way, selling a strip of land to a neighbor one day early into my days here. The land barron was so kind as to sell it back to me for $200L, lol. But he did show me how to set the land to sell to an individual, and never leave it open, if your selling for "0" or a $1. Was a tough lesson to learn, but its one ive never forgotten...

oh just read this part, well hmmm all i can say is, maybe you cant sell to yourself in SL ? Or the name didnt take, but before you hit the "OK" button, be sure everything is in place cause the land sharks are always watching...and yes if they had a conscience it would be a differnt SL i agree, but they dont, clear and simple, its the same old addage, if you found a $1000 on the ground, would you pocket it up, or try and find the owner? And only you know the answer to that..because in the end we all have to live in our skin and yes i do believe in karma, what comes around goes around...

There is such a simple fix to this which LL does not choose to do... probably because they enjoy getting the tier fees when land changes hands....
But basically, all that needs to happen, is anyone that clicks to buy land, a message goes to the seller "Joe Schmoe wants to buy your land for $X, click ok to confirm"
It's that simple.

The real solution would be to pop up an 'Are you sure?' dialog if you set your land for sale below a certain threshold price, like L$1/m, without setting a specific buyer.

Personally, I think that land should not be sold without both the buyer and seller online.... If the seller is offline, he/she gets the message when they log on. I don't think land should be able to be changing hands with a click of the mouse. My method would keep all aspects of the land deal human activated. In RL, what land is sold with one click of a mouse without the buyer having any say?

The last time I sold land there was a pop up that said something like "you are about to set your land for sale for xxxx and may be bought by anyone, are you sure?", to which I had the option to say yes or no.
Have they removed that?

They have no ability to empathise with other human beings and for them as long as they are getting what they want then no one else matters. Worse yet, are the ones who have and can hear that little voice, but who willingly chose to ignore it. In the end of the day, it can be argued that both types deserve the room in Hell that is being built for them, brick, by brick, with their own selfishness and cruelty. Regardless what the rules may say you ^can^ do, most of us are highly aware of the morality of our choices, and therefore know it is generally not right to cause others pain and stress. This is what I characterize as anti-socail behavior. It is the griefer gone legit. It also has to be allowed that people make mistakes and things happen-- heaven forbid someone crash at the little confirmation popup and SL takes that as a yes. I feel for the OP's friend. Its why I have helped a couple of other folks by walking them thru the process. Its also why some of our great grandparents would band together to tar and feather the occassional social retard. Someone mentioned Lawful Evil in a similar thread... Yea, sounds about right.

Bad people suck!
08-04-2006 02:05
As for the solution to the increase of land swooping it has already been pointed out earlier in this thread, the people that do this aren't using scripts to find these plots of cheap land, they're using Search > Land Sales. If LL want to stop this underhanded activity they don't need any extra confirmation boxes, they simply need to add a 5 minute delay before land set for sale is listed in the Land Sales search. Land Swoopers can't swoop in and buy it if they don't know it's there! Of course this won't stop people who happen to wander by from buying it if they see the land is for sale at L$1, the only thing that will stop that is proper education in the use of the land sale tools. It wasn't that long ago that LL made alterations to the land transfer system so that land set to L$0 could only be purchased if the buyer was named in the Sell To field of the land sales options, most likely to try and prompt residents into using the Sell To option when attempting to make private transfers. Unfortunately it seems a lot of people are just opting to sell their land for L$1 to get around the restriction put in place to protect them from theives and opportunists.

From: someone ...As she was preparing to do so, she put in the price of $1, and thought she had set it to sale to only herself, but low and behold, a land baron with a script swooped in instantly and bought it... 1L$ is an odd amount to set it to, of course if she'd put in zero she'd have been fine, it will only allow you to sell to a named person for zero. Perhaps LL should raise that threshold ? This happened to me once too, you only do it once ! Unfortunately, as I see things, we live in a culture where lying, stealing, cheating and coercion are actively encouraged. It's not due to "human nature" the root causes are fairly obvious to anyone with half a brain.

I was so sorry to hear this happened to Haver, and it's a clear cut case of a land baron with no sense of ethics or morality. Sorry, it's jerks like his who give the good ones a bad name too and I'd like see a little self regulation & peer pressure within the business to help prevent and deal with situations like this. Until then, I know who this guy is and I'll be letting everyone know how disreputable he is and furthermore, i'll have nothing to do with any other land baron either - I know for a fact he associates with some of the rest of you.
People will always propose technical solutions but people will always make mistakes too. Ultimately it's shameful human behaviour that needs addressing here.

Perhaps LL should raise that threshold ? Yes, they could set it to anything under L$10. Then we can have residents posting on the forums about how they've had their land stolen from them for a mere L$11 If only allowing L$0 land sales to a named person didn't work why would it work for L$1 or L$2? Perhaps LL should change the land sales options so that when you tick the Sell Land box it brings up the Sell To options window and then the seller would have to either use the search feature to find and select the person they were transfering the land to or choose the 'Any Resident' option before the land can be set for sale. From: CJ Carnot People will always propose technical solutions but people will always make mistakes too. Ultimately it's shameful human behaviour that needs addressing here. Agreed. Unfortunately shameful human behaviour is not so easily addressed. If it were then there wouldn't be so much of it in RL, and with the anonimity that SL provides such behaviour is a lot more prevalent. If I could offer a solution to the lousy attitude and atrocious behaviour of our species then I can assure you I'd be doing it somewhere a lot more public than these forums It really does suck that this happens, and it would be really nice to find a way to stop it from happening again and again. I'm sure that LL and the legitimate land barons would agree because it will potentially affect their businesses as well. If customers feel that the product they're buying can be stolen from them easily they become less willing to purchase it.

When something like this happens to us, or to those we care about, it's natural to start asking why? But there isn't an answer, at least not one that helps, as to how and why people are capable of acting like this, you just have to accept it as being part of our world, unfortunately :/ You really don't have to wait for karma though, as their very outlook on life is like a ball and chain to their happiness. Unfortunately, this leads me to some seemingly inappropriate responses. Some may consider that childish as well. However, what is right and wrong in a situation like this breaks down to the same situation it arrived under. The right thing to do is to consider contacting a Linden and explaining the situation. I'd hope that transactions on a plot of land are recorded so that you may present the evidence in favor of the victim of this occurrence. The wrong thing to do, but more likely to be solved in response to, is the building pressure behind the scenes. Drama, drama, drama. It's going to happen.
