It's possible that the project was taken over by another person in the WF company who had no... um... no... um... feelings, ethics, or aesthetics? or um..

Finally, to clarify, I'm speaking as a project developer in SL, along the lines of Bedazzle. All this is purely hypothetical on my part, based on what others have said in this thread regarding their experience with Wells Fargo.

In other words, the views expressed by Cory Edo are not necessarily the views of the Eternal Word Television Network.

Perhaps WF are inadvertantly exposing the fact that they are evil alien lifeforms intent on enslaving the youth of the world through banking? Well, it COULD BE.

But I do speak for the Lord. And He'd like you to read Him the numbers on the back of your Visa or Mastercard for easier, faster processing.

Although WF employees appear to be alien in most respects, they were one of the best clients I have ever dealt with in RL. They are trying to enslave the world through banking, but they are usually very nice about it.

WF also takes quite a bit of pride in the usability and customer friendly orientation of their website. The rest of us view them as a "best in class". I don't think they would have reacted positively to any performance issues related to SL.

Wow. I guess the quietly slipping out into the night holds true for corporate as well as individual users. I am also surprised that Bedazzle was not contracted to do the crossover work in AW much less unaware of the platform switch. I hope LL was involved in discussions concerning their dissatisfaction with SL or at least able to obtain feedback from Wells Fargo.

I agree with Margaret on all points.

This is just bizarre. All that work for nothing.

On top of that, apparently Wells Fargo simply screengrabbing all the textures to export into AW, which, I might add, is based on 8 year old technology, very clunky, and is scarcely hardware accelerated.

Does Bedazzled have any recourse? It seems awfully shady that they'd simply screengrab all the content to recreate it elsewhere.

It was my understanding that Bedazzle was paid a lump sum of 10K US$ for the work. That should of included the textures presented to WF in a folder. I'm suprized that it seems they did not. The job should of included all the textures to use as WF saw fit, where ever they saw fit to use them.

I prefer using credit unions for my personal banking, anyway. I find them to be much more personal and "little guy" type customer oriented, and I get all the services I would with a bank.

According to Cory Linden, Bedazzle was paid $17,000 (of which I got $1,000). I've never heard any $40,000 figure. If you did, I would like to know your sources.

Eggy, I don't remember. I believe I said, "I believe it was 40k or something like that," or something like that. Do not hold me to some figure I already said I was iffy on, ok? I don't remember the source, and now that you mention it, seems like I remember you saying 17k some time back, too.

When I compare how much was paid to the various SL members and the going rate for programming and graphics consultants, well this stinks. I thought people were supposed to rob banks rather than banks robbing people?

But that figure is more than 50% less dramatic, Eggy! Come on, now!

40k is like 17k?

Boy, that could be really good or really bad, depending on which side of the coin toss you came up on.

btw, the difference between 17k and 40k is a college education, on an annual scale.

I have to be the first one to say it...I logged onto AW today with my work computer...500Mhz Intel PII, 256Mb ram, Intel 64Mb Onboard video and it worked just fine and ran good! I walked around without a single "jitter" of lag.

The coolest part was when I found a mixing area, people created beats and played them together when standing near each other and had virtual jam sessions as they created music. I will say the bits are much longer than 10 seconds that is for sure.

I hate to say it but SL needs some work, AW is rather old I remember playing it several years ago and they have improved that system so dramatically. I saw those side-by-side screen shots and all I can say is there was not much of a diff, even to go so far as to say their sky looked better.

Please don't flame me, this is out of pure observation. I have not used AW for so long I did not think to ever compare the two.

Time to download :D how much is it?

Edit: downloaded, ran, lot to it, different but the same. Its free.

I remembered a higher number (for some reason 35K sounds familiar to me) as well as the 17K from Eggy just like Coco did. I'm guessing that the early reports on Stagecoach and Bedazzle had rumors of a higher amount which got stuck in my head in addition to a later actual figure. What's the big deal? Why are you fussing at Coco about it?

Stagecoach Moved to ActiveWorlds
01-09-2006 16:59
Just wanted to weigh in on this thread.

In late November Wells Fargo informed Linden Lab that they would not be progressing beyond the BETA period with Stagecoach Island. They cited several reasons including cost, system requirements and the ability to seperate the Stagecoach experience from the main grid.

Having looked at the Stagecoach deployment in Active Worlds, it looks quite nice. It would be valuable to hear from Bedazzle regarding the content issues; not having been involved in their contract, it's impossible to speculate on what the terms of use of content were.

That said -- despite the dissappointment of seeing this project move to ActiveWorlds, it was a very powerful learning experience for us at LL. We are moving towards having a much better idea of what works and what does not in this type of project and also towards understanding how to handle such projects better in the future.

Glad to hear your input Reuben. Sorry it didn't work out but I think most of the issues that Wells Fargo had are addressable. Also, woud you encourage your fellow lindens to put forth more candid and complete information like this on other questions? Such as what was LLs thinking behind the 10-40 sim auctions? I've heard massive amounts of speculation, and I'd really like to know about the thoughts and motivations that bounced around the linden meeting room before it was announced.

Oh, I dunno. Our dear Cocoanut made such a dramatic show when this was announced, you'll forgive my cynicism re: her wild overestimations.

Wow, you know you are hitting a nerve when an actual Linden comments. :)

Too bad it has to be an economic issue that could lead to them losing business or upsetting the FIC content creators for this rare event to occur. A Linden comment here or there on all our *other* troubles (that dont necessarily spell bad PR or loss of business for LL), is too much to expect I guess.

You know, I would kinda like to see that mythical contract myself :)
I'm not a lawyer, but Foxy claims she signed something that somehow gave them the rights.
But how can she possibly grant someone rights on content that she didn't make?
Bedazzle is not a legally registered entity, and neither me, Jimmy, or the vendors ever signed anything saying they granted Foxy any rights that she could give away.
Where I'm getting at is, do groups have any legal meaning outside SL?
Does the fact that you join a group or marginally collaborate with a group instantly grant the founder legal rights over our content?
If so, where does it end? Cubey's skydiving, for instance, is only related to Stagecoach Island very tangentially.
I can accept the fact that Jimmy probably sent them a copy of his textures and said they were ok to use... but why did they go around taking snapshots of stuff?
To me, it seems like someone copied Cubey's stuff without permission, but as I said I'm not a lawyer.

If the contract was with Foxy, and she gave them the rights, it was her responsibility to let all subcontractors know their work would become the property of Wells Fargo. I'm speculating a bit on the arrangement of course.

Signing the rights over is not an unreasonable request or business move. People want to own what they pay for. Not letting subcontractors know about the arrangement is a mistake.
