Excellent idea, Sable! not sure about plaques being given to the sites.. that could tarnish the reputation of such a site in some peoples eyes. other than that.. groovy. also, i was wondering if maybe we should also have a "Seven Wonders (created by LL) of SL"? there's the Pomponia volcano, Mount G'al, the Great Northern Wall (or whatever it's being called), the SL hand in the water (map art-ish), and so on.. as far as resident-created builds go.. i have to give another vote to The Ivory Tower of Prims (Noyo), as well as the Beanstalk in Welsh.. but, i believe the Tan Clock Tower has been recently removed. Maxx Monde's skyscraper is definitely a good suggestion. it's been around for quite some time and is an incredibly impressive build, both in design and implementation. i still have yet to visit Numbakulla.. i know, i know.. shame on me. i'll get there soon, maybe today. while i'm in-world, i'll try to make it over to The Lost Gardens of Apollo as well. oh yeah.. one last suggestion/nomination. The Mushroom Kingdom.

Great thread
01-15-2006 03:42
First of all, let me give my contragulations and thanks to all contributors for this wonderful thread!! I've been to the Lost Gardens of Apollo, and I have to agree that they are out of this world! Numbakullah I went briefly to but the theme seems to be suited best to going with someone and I was alone, so i'll go back sometime. Boardman was nice in a middle-America kind of way. I'm not too keen on such picture-postcard towns but it has it's charms nonetheless. The clocktower at Tan is very much still there and is indeed a wonder with its spires and rotating internal dial. It's like a cross between a chateau and Big Ben Maybe someone should make a tourism route as well. As cool as it is to teleport around the place, I was stunned to accidently discover that Boardman and Tan are right next to each other and I did a simple flyover. Maybe a tour itinerary?

My submissions
01-15-2006 03:46
OK, I'd like to submit a building for consideration to the 7 wonders panel.
It's quite new, so the permanence factor has to be determined.
It's in Athabasca 119, 151, 102.
It belongs to the DNA demented circuitry DJ supply firm. Their original shop (square open building) on the site is still there and it is pretty cool in itself with all sorts of lighting effects.
However I'd like to submit the new shop, which is quite unlike any building I've seen. It's almost like a crashed spacecraft and I joked to the owner that he might be trying to take over SL. Honestly it's worth a visit.
The Jedi Alliance Temple and grounds are also pretty impressive as builds too, maybe worth a visit - though flying is disabled on the site and you have to either use a vehicle or (gasp) actually run!

I'd like to 2nd the nomination of the Kazenojin station in Gray. It seems to be one of those wonders of such colossual proportion, similar to the pyramids of Giza, that it would be very difficult for a group to build again.
I do agree it was much nicer in its ancient times, but it still has merit despite losing details. Hopefully some people may find interest and restore it.

More!
01-15-2006 09:09
Just been to Kazenojin and it's awesome - 779m from top to bottom! Maxx Monde's tower and the Pomponio volcano (sited imaginatively next to each other) were also good but in the context of Kazenojin, dwarfed LOL. The Beanstalk at Welsh was also a unique experience, definitely should be on the list on nominations. I didn't "get" the wall at Jessie unless I missed it. I also couldn't find the Man Statue at Natoma. There was a giant robot though...and of course the gorgeous Ivory Tower is situated there too. More places to submit: - 1) ElvenGlen with its majestic castle and wonderfully-dressed folk. The complete fantasy experience. 2) Tibet Spa at Wakeley - fanstastic dreamscape of oriental design 3) Support For Healing (163, 28, 26) - lavish gardens, rivalling those of the lost Gardens of Apollo in scale and ambition but perhaps without the air of mystery - however it has an air of peace and...well, healing! Must see. 4) The various mountaintop and sky castles in the adjacent Arches, Campanula and Lapara (the latter being my home sim ) sims - they're crowded with wonderful creations, espcially the flying Mjollnir palace - think the floating palace in the James Bond film "Octopussy" but more beautiful and floating in the sky rather than water.

Tree of Life
01-17-2006 14:07
Got another fantastic nomination for 7 wonders of SL - a dead cert to make it as one of the 7 IMO.
If you thought the Beanstalk at Welsh was big -
just go to the Crann Bethadh or Tree of Life in Techra (25, 239, 22). It's a tree that covers about a quarter of a sim in area and from top to bottom, it is well beyond a basic unaided avatar's flight ceiling. Without doubt it is the largest tree in SL. Try zooming in on your av when you're right up against the tree and you'll not dispute that!
More than sheer size, though, it has a beauty of grandiose proportions with its branches sweeping the clouds. It even has a large chamber in the bole and a spiral staircase that goes up the trunk.
This wonder MUST be visited by you all, I demand it!

*bump*

any more progress on this? is the list still being actively pursued?
any more suggestions?
i'm thinking about whether this thread would make a good sticky or not.. any thoughts on this? should there be a seperate thread simply for posting amazing sites/sights using this thread as a basis?
oh.. and from what i understand the Tree of Life in Techra is being taken down, so while it would definitely make for a wonderful nominee into the Seven Wonders of Second Life, it doesn't appear to be permanent enough for this list. (but yes, if anyone hasn't visited this yet, i also suggest checking it out. if it's still there..)

Roma

I would like to nominate ROMA ~~~ Ave Caesar!, Linda (171, 252, 30). Not only is it pretty, but it has a lot of history about ancient Rome. Belive it or not but I do wish it had more shopping!

From: Annetha Christensen I would like to nominate ROMA ~~~ Ave Caesar!, Linda (171, 252, 30). While you're in the neighborhood, you might as well visit Liferain's new Jungle build in Linda on the east side of ROMA. Fly up yourself or take the teleporter from the small island at water level. The build is at about 250m. Reduce your draw distance to 64m and check your max particles if you have trouble seeing the waterfalls. Photos here.

Thanks Annetha for the kind words! ROMA will be expanding in the next coming weeks with a big rebuild, so please excuse the mess for a bit! But you, and everyone else, is welcome any time. And I'll work on trying to make some more shopping areas as well!

Hi all-- TaiChi Pontoppidan just pointed out this topic to me. I would love it if all you who nominated wonders here re-post them in a new project I'm working on with a guy who wants to create beautiful 360 degree Web-based screenshots of SL. Details and rules for nominating here: /18/cb/90165/1.htmlI'm also talking with Sable Sunset on hopefully uniting these two projects together in that thread, because the screenshot artist fragghetto Strauss has expressed his willingness to work with the project she's already launched.

Natural Wonders Galore
02-28-2006 11:29
If you go to Mahulu and start at the volcano there are multiple rivers flowing from the active volcano. There must be 5-10 gorgeous Linden made waterfalls in the surronding 5 sim area. I've made it a semi project to visit all the linden made waterfalls. They are usually (if not always) on the sim boundary down a river. This area should be made a national park or something.

Builder needed for 8th wonder.
03-03-2006 12:35
I have teamed up with my neigbor and have over 32sqm beachfront land. We are using the Relics;Seccret garden and Romanza kits. We have started a small scale model of what we hope to be an ancient city and 8th wonder of SL.
I am in desperate need of a builder/designer and will pay for their assistance. We have most of the idea's worked out but need help!
Our other neigbors are looking to jump on the band wagon of this theme but right now have a wait and see attitude.
PLZ...PLZ help....I am not doing this to make a profit. I only want to have a place in SL that everyone can enjoy,

I nominate Serenity Falls
03-07-2006 07:02
I would like to add Serenity Falls (208,162) to the list of nominees. It creates a wonderful atmosphere of nature with sounds, plants, and tranquility, and presents some unique builds of old-time cottages. It also has excellent fountains and pools that capture the feel of ancient Greece & Rome. Want a beach? There is also the seaside with waves, underwater plants and fish, boats to sail, steel drums to play, barbecue, and a rainforest and tropical oasis! This sim has captured my heart & spirit!

Amber Town
03-07-2006 07:48
I have a possible for the list. Has anybody been to Amber Town?? We are an 1800's Old American West port town, complete with harbor with wharves and full sailing ship. Much time has been spent on creating tne athmosphere of the real old west. It has until now been mostly a hobby island. We are presently reorganising some portions, but the heart of the sim will be largely untouched. Some of the changes will involve making this a Western Role playing sim and working towards the total cultural immersion effect with both the realistic setting and the proper personae. While it is not thouroghly finished (What in SL is??) Amber Town is open for all to come and visit. Come and enjoy a walk in our small piece of the Old West.

My current Five Wonders
03-07-2006 07:58
Nominations: Apollo (169, 106, 26) Serenity Falls(208.162) Telador Isle (160, 78, 31) The Forest (63, 88, 31) L'Utopie (197, 25, 3 These places pretty much speak for themselves. Not only can I relax and enjoy myself but I am also able to shop as well as fiddle around with Julia Hathor's hidden rooms and unique poses in the grottos at Serenity Falls. Telador reminded me very much of the Myst days - love the hidden cave/cave door done by Uri Pasteur and Zac Bunderfeld and for the first time somewhat enchanted by the funny little green glow bugs stalking my buttocks. *wry grin*

Tab on the In-Game Find
03-08-2006 02:40
Can we have the winners of this Seven Wonders for Second Life on its own tab in-game on the Find? Frankly, I'd like to use such a tab much more than the Most Popular Lot tab to get around to the scenic spots in SL. That tab is way scewed by the use of camping chairs, pads, and etc.

I second this suggestion

(Hamlet, I hope you read this) My success rate for finding these wonderful places from the "FIND" screen has been dismal unless I have the exact name of the area and the coordinates. These are all great places that new folks could get started with and enjoy. The existing "popular places" are definately not my list of favorites. Thanks, Tai

How about a vote

It's a great idea, but the implementation of something like this is troublesome. When I joined SL, the Lindens had a page similar to this in find, except that the content was determined by Linden Lab. They put some things there that they thought would be interesting or useful for new people to see. Things like Luna Mall, Ivory Tower, etc. It proved to be problematic and was eventually removed--in part because a lot of people asked for it to be removed. One problem is keeping it up to date. New things are being added to SL daily and old things are disappearing daily. So any initiative like this has to be ongoing. It isn't enough to put together a list of wonders. You have to keep updating that list constantly. Another problem is that it tends to starve things that aren't on the list. There became a feeling that certain attractions were more popular simply because they were on the list and thus easier to find. To do this in a fair and comprehensive way is a daunting task and it just gets harder everyday.

To do this in a fair and comprehensive way is a daunting task and it just gets harder everyday. The current situation with the Most Popular list is equally bad or even worse. There are some pretty crappy lots on the list but because they are loaded with camping chairs, they stay up high in the list. Whereas amazing lots like The Lost Garden's of Apollo never show up on the Most Popular list and gets its traffic starved as you put it. You solved one problem by creating another. It's only fair to have both a "Most Popular" and a "Wonders of SL" tabs. Someone at Lindens will just have to own up to managing the "Wonders of SL" list on a regular basis. It's only problematic because your trying to find a way to build it in a automated hands-off fashion. That's impossible in this case. And if anyone complains that the "Wonders of SL" tab is starving their lots, you should tell them to get off their arse and do a better job desiging their lot instead of throwing up crap and depending on camping chairs to keep it listed.

I agree that it's a problem, but a more decentralized approach makes sense to me.
When I joined SL, one of the best ways that I had of finding new places was to look at other peoples Picks in their profile.
Seems like there's a lot of untapped potential there. It kind of lets each person Pick their personal Ten Wonders of the World.
Maybe there's some way to make Picks more searchable. Maybe there should be a quick interface to get to your friends Picks or some way to create an index into the Picks of strangers that you've found useful. It needs fleshing out, but it seems like there's a lot of potential.

Well, if you really think that a hands-off approach is required, then why not build a tab that consist of the top 20 most often pick listed lots? Just read through everyone's avatar data, scan their pick list, count the number of times each lot is pick listed by an avatar, sort the list from highest count to lowest, and then post the ones with the highest counts on the "Most Pick Listed" tab. That at least would allow you to dodge having to do fire control.

List maintenance

Reinitiating a similar thread, maybe once a year, or some other interval, would be all the maintenance a Linden Labs employee would need. That's about as hands-off as you can get. Tai
