Sable, outstanding post, I myself have been contemplating virtually the same thing. This type of thing is precisly what is needed to help elevate our Second Life experience past the "just a game" presumptions.
Being that I've put a wee bit of thought into this in the past, I hope you don't mind if I share some preliminary brainstorming I've done here. Seeing how you've got the subject rolling, and I think this needs to be a concertive community activity, I'd like to add to and, if agreeable, we can start a "campaign" and I have a few suggestions to further expand forum and community visibility.
Well aighty den,
I was thinking something similar to the World Heritage Committee as well as the Seven Wonders. This would expand the number of feilds and the numder be field.
I'll be including snippets from Wikipedia as a quick and convienient "crash course" so please bare with me,
First a possible expansion of the Seven Wonders;
From:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_WondersThe
Seven Wonders of the World (or the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) is a widely-known list of seven remarkable constructions of classical antiquity. The earliest known version of the list was compiled in the 2nd century BC by Antipater of Sidon; it appears to be based on the guide-books popular among Hellenic sight-seers.
Listed in order of their construction, the seven wonders are—the Great Pyramid of Giza
the Hanging Gardens of Babylon
the Statue of Zeus at Olympia
the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
the Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus
the Colossus of Rhodes
the Lighthouse of Alexandria
and then:
Modern wondersThe following list of the top seven existing wonders was compiled by Hillman Wonders:Great Pyramid of Giza
Great Wall of China
Taj Mahal
Serengeti Migration
Galapagos
Grand Canyon
Machu Picchu
The American Society of Civil Engineers compiled another list of wonders of the modern world:Channel Tunnel
CN Tower
Empire State Building
Golden Gate Bridge
Itaipu Dam
Netherlands' Tidal Defences
Panama Canal
Natural wondersSimilar to the other lists of wonders, there is no consensus on a list of seven natural wonders of the world. One of the lists was compiled by CNN [1]:Grand Canyon
Great Barrier Reef
Harbor of Rio de Janeiro
Mount Everest
Northern Lights
Paricutín Volcano
Victoria Falls
Underwater wondersThis list of underwater wonders is of unknown origin but has been repeated sufficiently often to acquire a degree of notability:[2] [3]Palau
Belize Barrier Reef
Great Barrier Reef
Deep-Sea Vents
Galapagos Islands
Lake Baikal
Northern Red Sea
Alternative listAccording to the New 7 Wonders Foundation, the top seven wonders are:Great Wall of China
Potala Palace
Taj Mahal
Colosseum
Pyramids of Chichen Itza
Statues of Easter Island
Tower of Pisa
So here are a few things to help kick it up a notch and allow for more possible "wonders".
And now to the World Heritage Committee. First a quick brief:
From:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_heritagealso here is thier official site:
http://whc.unesco.org/A
UNESCO World Heritage Site is a specific site (such as a forest, mountain range, lake, desert, building, complex, or city) that has been nominated for the international World Heritage Programme administered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
The programme aims to catalogue, name, and preserve sites of outstanding importance, either cultural or natural, to the common heritage of humankind. Listed sites can obtain funds from the World Heritage Fund under certain conditions. The programme was founded with the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage that was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972. 180 countries, called "States Parties", have since then ratified the convention.
SNIP
Selection CriteriaUntil the end of 2004, there were six criteria for cultural heritage and four criteria for natural heritage. In 2005, this was modified so that there is only one set of ten criteria. Nominated sites must be of "outstanding universal value" and meet at least one of the ten criteria.
Cultural CriteriaI. "to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius";
II. "to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design";
III. "to bear a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared";
IV. "to be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history";
V. "to be an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement, land-use, or sea-use which is representative of a culture (or cultures), or human interaction with the environment especially when it has become vulnerable under the impact of irreversible change";
VI. "to be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance. (The Committee considers that this criterion should preferably be used in conjunction with other criteria)";
Natural CriteriaVII. "to contain superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance";
VIII. "to be outstanding examples representing major stages of earth's history, including the record of life, significant on-going geological processes in the development of landforms, or significant geomorphic or physiographic features";
IX. "to be outstanding examples representing significant on-going ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, fresh water, coastal and marine ecosystems and communities of plants and animals";
X. "to contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those containing threatened species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation."
This is by no means a difinative "do it this way", simple an idea of an exixting process that we may be able to utilize.
I really think that if we can present it in a plausable manner this is something the Lindens should be more then happy to assist in.
A few more idea points that I had to go with:
The SL World Heritage Committee could consist of a number of department, think this would help to maximize those individuals abilities in that area oppossed to 3 people tryin to do all the marketing, selection, voting, researching, etc...
Exploration Team: to actually go "on location" and take site documentation, pics etc..
Marketing/PR Team: Billboards, classifieds, forums, real world crossovers.
Funds Department: Income donations, laison w/Lindens
Content Collection: This is an idea I had where people can donate objects, animations, etc... that can be given away at selected location accompanied by a donation box. This department can then take them and distribute them to the vendors.
Okey dokey, so sorry for such an eyebleeder
Now, I'll wait to for any replies to the affermative and then we can get together and think of the best way to try to get this on the ball.
I'll be more then happy to post his as a seperate thread if that may help to get "more" visability, and we can use this thread as a "hub". I'll also be able to get threads in the New Products forum because I will be making an pose vendor called
"The Classic" that I will be willing to give away the poses with a donation box to help get things started. I would try to ad at least one a week or something like that, to ensure that there's a continued rotaion, and that will allow for a new post each time, getting the info to the top continually. some exapmles like:
"The Vitruvian Man" by de Vinci
"Le Penseur" aka The thinker by Auguste Rodin, from "La Porte de l'Enfer" aka The Gates Of Hell, incase you were wondering
Venus de Milo
David
Mona Lisa
Colossus of Rhodes
Dying Gaul: by Attalos I of Pergamon to honor his victory over the Galatians
And as always open to more suggestions

I think this is exactly what we need to enrich our Second Life and help it to evlove. One thing that makes the Human experince so unique is our ability to experince and appreciate beauty. Our ability to acknowledge it and PRESERVE it, for our continued enjoyment and the enjoyment of future generations, helps enrich our lives, our environment and apease or souls. By preserving the beauty that is in SL i believe it would help make it a more "human" experience, and thus more enjoyable and more unique
Enough jibberjabber, you can take a nap now! *hands Visine*
Please feel free to comment, chop, add, subtract, do the cha cha, or whatever, i'd really like to see this go somewhere.
