I just got contacted by a guy who's working on a very cool project: depicting the seven marvels of SL in 360 degree screenshots on the Web. What's even cooler is him and his team have already done this with a bunch of top games. Check 'em out here:

http://www.panogames.com/

In-world, he's Fragghetto Strauss. He's agreed to consider the places nominated by democratic Resident vote for the full 360 degree treatment-- and I've agreed to feature the top seven selected by Residents in the new New World Notes.

So, the nomination rules:

- Nominate by posting in this topic.
- Up to seven nominations per Resident.
- Nominate your seven most favorite locations and/or builds in SL, based on artistic quality, social/cultural value, grandeur and wonder, or any criterion you choose to consider.
- Include the sim name and x/y coordinates. (And the z coords, if it's in an out of the way place.)
- Builds that exist only in sandboxes are permissable, as long as they can be rezzed by appointment.
- You may post screenshots as your nomination (if you caption them with the sim/x/y)
- Deadline: end of March 10!

LET THE VOTING BEGIN!

I'd nominate the top seven camping locations on the popular list if the Lindens would allow me to set them on fire first.

Im lieu of that I'll think on it there actually some very nice things out there

I think this is a very well done, prominant, and humourous build that has been around for quite a while.

I hope it isn't bad form to nominate something one helped to build...but I would like to nominate Numbakulla, because I love it still.

I'd nominate Numbakulla so that should cover it. Had a great time, if only for the texture work and build!

The first things that come to mind are not with us anymore (Heaven & Hell, Spitoonie Island). The volcano in Pompano is something I've always enjoyed, the Ivory Tower (although the top used to be more ornate) Library of Primitives is impressive and inspiring.

The new Ivory Tower Library of Primitives in Natoma will be even more spectacular when Lumiere Noir is finished with it.

It is a wonderful institution here and has been continually helping residents learn to build since the first prim was laid down. I would like to nominate The Ivory Tower as well.

Lumiere simplified the top of the Noyo Tower when he transferred a portion of his Noyo land to the Forest of Kahruvel. I think that he may be slowly preparing to move the Building Tutorials and the rest of the Noyo Tower's contents to Natoma, once the tower at the new location is complete.

Hi SL Residents,
and thanks for contributing to this project.
We all know about the RL Seven Wonders like The Great Pyramid of Giza, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, ecc., but which are the seven marvels in SL? This was the big question i had before contacting Hamlet and New World Notes.
Travelling around SL, i still see so many incredible buildings, that inspire me (i'm in RL an architect).
Well, here we have the chance to show the big online community what creative minds can build and plan without many economics limitation, or landscape planning laws. Buildings that gives you and me sensations, feelings while whatching them.

I always thought that in SL i could build what in RL i could not. This is one of the big challenge that Linden gave us.

So lets nominate the Seven Wonders of SL togheter, i will shoot them as 3D panoramic images, so we will show this beauties to not SL residents (till now)...;)

VOTE,VOTE,VOTE....till march 10th.
Thnaks to all again!!

Hi everyone!

It's great that everyone is still so enthusiastic about this topic - the original response we got when we first raised this idea in the thread here was amazing and the support since then, both on the thread and in-world has been great!

In fairness to Hamlet he may not have even known about this initial post, and the follow-up from other people, and I think the concept that Fragghetto has brought to this subject is very interesting. However, it is a shame that this project will likely brush away many hours of work and discussion that has already taken place.

Since the original thread was started I have been working with the Society of Virtual Architecture to try to promote this idea and create some criteria - and it's not easy. One problem is that stuff that seems Seven Wonder-worthy disappears and doesn't last. They are supposed to be somehow part of the world, maybe not "permanent" but at least something someone can visit.

I have to say that I find it hard to see the intention of including builds that only exist in sandboxes? Surely, from LL's point of view you would want to show builds that can be advertised and promoted to encourage more users and developers to sign up? and those users are going to want to be able to actually visit those builds once they arrive. This was the reason that The Society put emphasis on longevity of submissions.

I'm also not sure about how you would qualify "based on artistic quality, social/cultural value, grandeur and wonder, or any criterion you choose to consider." This seems to imply that you can have any build nominated for absolutely any reason.

The Society has gone to great pains to try to set out definitive criteria that can be used to judge builds on a level playing field. With no set criteria there are no basis for comparison between them, and the 'winners' will most likely be chosen by how many people are on their friends list rather than the quality of the work involved.

It would be nice to see this additional concept brought into the work that The Society has put so much effort into carrying forward, but I fear that the very tight deadline put onto this 'contest' would indicate that there is some other constraint placed upon the process that would prevent any collaboration.

My List of nominees:

Kasteel Veloren (209,131,43)- a great medieval castle with its village. Nice to wander its maze of passageways! Had to laugh at the dungeon- a great place for pictures!

Serenity Falls (208,162,12)- Home to Creative Fantasy, this sim features old English-style homes in a little village, has a unusual beach area, an area of Greek antiquities, and even a Latin Pavillion! Love the picnic blanket on the mountain top with the guitar and waterlilly lights! And of course, it is dear to my heart, being mine!

Lost Gardens of Apollo (169,106,26)- Fantasy at its finest! The sunset atmosphere, the hanging garden-pool areas, the towering architecture, the artful seats to dream and meditate, love it all!

Cameo Isle Victorian Village (49,221,22) Yes, its a bridel shop area, but it is way more than that! Great Victorian architecture, reminds me of Cape May NJ- my home town!

Silk Waters(92,112,128)- This place with its gently falling snow transports you to Japan! Skillfully built down to the tiniest detail, makes you want to get your Kantana and walk the mountain paths with a swager! Love the 'Low Town' too!

The best of SL

Sable, thank you for letting us new folks know of the Society thread. I look forward to
reading about your work. This new project doesn't have to detract from the first.
This thread's delight is in it's simplicy.... folks are sharing from their hearts, places that
have evolked feelings and emotions for them, free of judgement and bureaucracy.
Your reservations about temporary builds are valid because it would be nice if the best
could stay around for all to see and share. Blend the ideas from this thread with yours
and you will have a list worthy of what we all hope SL can be.
Delightfully, Tai

Hi Sable Sunset and contributors,
I didn't know about the thread of The Society, and I'm glad that someone already started a project like this one.
What I would like to do is to officially invite The Society group to merge and share with this new thread the great work they already did. I even would like to appoint Sunset to Project Manager of all this contents, and to publish a first beta list (a long one i think) where we can work on until we get the Seven Wonders.
I see the problem about buildings that are placed in the sandbox, or even those that no more exist. But if I think about the real world Seven Wonders, well... I never had the chance to see the Colossus of Rhodi or the The Lighthouse of Alexandria....;)
But we have to define a strategy, and I assume that making a list of the seven existing wonders is a good choice.
I would really like to set up some architectural criteria for this context, and even build up a committee, but if we want to get a final result with a list of seven wonders, we must keep it simple (thanks TaiChi Pontoppidan).
I will work on the final images for about 2 weeks to get all the work done. Just to taste the final quality, please see this example page we did for this thread :

http://www.panogames.com/second_life/test/

Again, thanks to all for contributing

Thanks for pointing out that original topic Sable started, TaiChi, I missed it when it first went up. The suggestions from it are great, and I'm going to put in a request for folks who posted there to re-post these suggestions here.

And Sable, I apologize for not noticing your project before posting this thread, but fortunately it looks like fragghetto is happy to combine his initiative and yours together.

To hit one of the points you make:

> I have to say that I find it hard to see the intention of including builds that only exist
> in sandboxes?

Two reasons: the sandboxes are home to some truly amazing projects that are built and then put into inventory before the daily wipe, and since the sandbox is so essential to SL-- arguably *the* most essential aspect of SL-- I wouldn't want to ignore these works simply because the builders don't have and/or can't afford land to feature them permanently. Also, of course, if any of them *are* featured as a Wonder, they'll hopefully be "adopted" by someone who does have the land to house them.

Gotta meeting, but will get back to this topic in a bit...

Sable, how about you and fragghetto discuss how you'd like to go forward? We can keep nominating places in this topic, or I'd be happy to turn over the nominations to your already running project, and you two can take it forward from there. Of course, I'd love to feature whatever Seven Wonders that do make the cut in the new New World Notes.

I would have to explore more of SL before I suggested seven nominations, but I have done a few images of SL already.
Jessica Qin showed me Panogames a few months ago and about one month ago I made a spherical viewer for the images seen there, and other sites. I was then inspired to make my own images. Here is my current list ~ some I was commissioned to do, and some I did for fun.

I don't store my builds on land anywhere, with perhaps one exception. All of them are in my inventory. Some see the light of SL-Day for a while, then are wiped. I agree with Hamlet - some interesting things do occur there that most people don't see.

I've seen other builds there that I haven't seen anywhere else. I think it is valid to consider them.

(I'm biased, of course.)
