If those were low prim sims that were bought then abandoned because of this mess and of course there is no way of knowing on each and everyone- but if just by chance they were, then they amount to at least $412,500 in set up fees at $250 each that LL collected for sims they no longer have to service. What a deal eh?

It kind of proves LL did this all on purpose (bait and switch etc)no one can tell me they went into this blindly then said "oh look what happened"
Also the silence from LL speaks volumes.if they were concerned about the amount of OS disappearing they would do something to remedy it AND FAST before it got worse.
The increase has'nt even kicked in yet but when it does there will be a mass evacuation of the remaining os AND LL DOES NOT EVEN GIVE IT A THOUGHT OR CARE

Many of those OS will have been converted to Full Sims. So where that's happened the estate owner has just changed rental format, and LL is still getting their money through that format.

Yup they only lose around USD$5 a month on a conversion, the real issue is whether new orders are down due to this decision. Over 1,000 new islands came onto the grid in October, they make money off the setup costs.

While that may be true,in the process LL has pissed off a whole lot of people (not that they seem to care a whole lot) who rented the OS in good faith and have to give them up
Many estate owners bought new islands to convert them to OS to rent out,now with the mass evacuations taking place estate owners are stuck with OS they have to convert back and are also stuck with paying the tier on these island,so i would guess many estate owners can't afford to keep these islands now

the last OS I dummped did not take them more than 10 mins to do it.... which says they are waiting and want this to happen.

The econimic statistics page doesn't update over the weekend, although it's stuck on Thursday.

Apparently the figures are wrong anyway, watch for an adjustment.

The 'raw data files' page is allready on Friday. What do you mean by 'the figures are wrong anyway'?

Jack Linden told us on Thursday that the figures are wrong and they will be fixing that soon. The issue is to do with sims that can't be contacted, if four openspaces are being converted to a full sim that should be a -3 figure not a -4. This of course wouldn't really be an issue if Linden Lab had a quicker turnaround time on conversions.

Islands added so far in November, as of November 30th: -1977.

So, that was the last day this month. The final result for November seems to be: -1977 island added. That is an average of 65.9 Islands lost per day. - What does that tell us?

Interesting statistics also published by LL

L$ Sources and Sinks

2008 October
Sinks (L$) Sources (L$)
187,687,609 133,106,245

2008 November - MTD
Sinks (L$) Sources ($L)
164,092,473 204,060,029

Now I don't know how typical this variation is however in Oct there was a 40+million Linden profit, last month there was a 40 million Linden deficit.

Further interest was that there was a large drop in classified and upload receipts, maybe the land owners no longer advertising land sales, and builders reducing their raw materials.

Only time will tell if this is a blip, insignificant, an indicator of the effect of change, or a reflection of the RL economy.

I don't understand the real economy, let alone the SL one. But they do look like interesting figures worthy of note.

For my part, I cancelled my classifieds for the reasons you mention. No point advertising land that is about to be abandoned, and my little shop (that sells an *amazing* gadget) is being moved to save money.

As an academic I can see huge scope here for a paper on the SL economy, but I'm no economist. I'd need a collaborator.

Count Down
12-02-2008 05:28
I'm sure we're going to see a lot more SL islands LOSS in this final count down to the New Year. Already making serious forays and examinations into alternate worlds/grids. Be interesting to counter point the daily increasing loss of SL islands to the new upsurge in lands bought in previously low profile grids like Open Life and Legend City Online.

I think Linden Lab's greater loss will be not that of Open Spaces abandoned or converted, but all the future business in new Islands bought that has chilled out.

Waiting for the December numbers.

So, just from the OS sims gone in November, if you assume all of them were OS, that's $1,779,300.00 a year in lost revenue to Linden Labs from OS fees. Looks like they are on track to lose around the same number. So by my best guess, this boneheaded move by M Linden is going to cost the company about $3,000,000.00 a year or so in lost revenues.

Good going there, M! Woot! Woot! Your board is going to love this story.

Remember also that 66 lost sims per day for November is just the average. The actual lost per day started off slow and accelerated, with the last few days in November averaging over 100 sims per day. So far the rate of closures has been accelerating in a pretty much linear fashion. Eventually it has to level off, but if that survey in the other thread is any indication, that may not happen for months yet - and there'll be another mass exodus in July when the really big price jump hits.

So $3M a year may be a very conservative estimate for Linden Lab losses resulting from this customer relations disaster.

Many of those lost islands will be conversions, four openspaces converted to a full island only equals a loss of USD$5 a month, it's still a loss but not a massive one.

If there's a decline in new islands coming onboard that will be a loss.

I still don't think the second price rise will happen unless Linden Lab decide to sell the product direct.

From what I've been reading, the vast majority are simply closures, not consolidations. Consolidations are still happening often enough to skew the results, but the fact that we're in negative growth and that this decent has not yet reached terminal velocity I still think is going to be a huge problem for Linden Lab.

They really should have listened, instead of just patting us on the head and pushing us in the corner.

They did listen!!! Didn't you read that they were going to keep 'real' openspace sims at the same price point?? *

* as long as the owners dropped 80% of their prims

And a lot of the consolidations have been transfers; a number of people seem to be getting out of the estate market completely, but are selling/giving their islands to others rather than simply deleting them. It will be interesting to see what happens to the $2,000+ USD PMLF brackets in the economic stats in the next few months.

Between September and October, there were 96 fewer residents making over $2,000 a month (from 695 in September to 599 in October). The announcement didn't hit til the end of October, so who knows how many more will fall out of that bracket in the November/December numbers.
