Looks like the rate of shrinkage is increasing. Winter's coming and it is getting cold out, I guess..

Apparently the powers that be at LL agree with you, but God I really hope that I am misunderstanding this statement. I guess significance like beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I think that every one of those sims was significant to someone, at least significant enough for them to invest their time and money into it.
.

But not significant enough to pay the piper to continue. This is where the actual value of thousands of prefab islands filled with thousands of prefab houses and thousands of prefab sex beds will be genuinely measured: how much is the eye of the beholder willing to pay to keep it?

sorry but SL don't care really about some complains from us here in this forum.
Whenever they did some bullsh* like now with OS it did not hurt them really. They just think: let them cry for a while but then they gonna buy our ugly Mainland or overpriced, colonia dignidad like, Nautilus land.
They make money with the new users, they are exited and don't know about the way how LL thread them after they spend real $ here.

gambling ban, 3 weeks flurry..... done
VAT fraud, 6 weeks flurry.... some Premiums lost.... who care
OS cheat, 2 month they gonna complain again.... who care
...? raise Mainland fees..... who care, we will raise Full Sims soon
...? raise Full Sims....who care, they forget about the Mainland raise :)

so let's stop cry about that OS problem, drop our OS, cash out as soon as possible, play WoW for 6 month and see whats left here.

go Inworld and tell everybody: DON'T SPEND ANY REAL MONEY THEY KICK UR A* SOONER OR LATER.

If some Linden read here really, start to think about ur TOS. LL is responsible for nothing and they can change anything anytime...... that is not a base for any longterm business it is a base for fast cash rip em off business.

Okay I am going to be dropping the cash I *was* gonna spend on Second Life OS and Islands and Premium Memberships for friends into a new grid. Heard about Legend Cities Online last night, signed up and looked around and found out that HALF the cost of an SL island buys me a mini grid with TWO REGIONS [edit, said four by mistake], 20 thousand prims a region. Logged in this morning and the place worked more smoothly than SL has for me lately.

In SL in just the last couple days I've crashed multiple times, and was stuck half way transformed into a cat this morning while half my body refused to rez for the entire session I was signed in on. Let's not even mention the hideos lag that comes into play lately. I upgraded my computers over the summer to 4g Ram each, an Nvidia GeForce 8700 (on laptop) and Nvidia Geforce 8500 on my desktop, and do regular maintainence -- still having those moving like swimming through syrup days.

As soon as more content creators start loading up their wares on LCO, I'll be spending in style there. They give you great starter avatars, but I don't like being one clone of thousands, even if they are nifty.

yeah i have 6 Sims running at osgrid.org now, and they are running on my OWN Server almost for free. cannot buy anything there everything there. need something -> build it lol

I have also accounts in several other (half)commercial grids and it is amazing. But never ever spend any real $ in SL for virtual land. If one day my last left sim don't pay me back the tier i will drop it too.

Sooner or later everybody will understand that LL's goal is not to provide a platform for communication they wanna make $$ and nothing else is important really. Basicly that is not wrong, it's business but TOS of LL does not give you ANY rights. They did not even tell any Landlord by Mail about the plans, blog it and that's it. Imagine if the owner of a house rented by a Linden will change the tier and announce it just in a local newspaper.

/me again mad and pis*ed about LL.

This number only reflects the reduction in number of sims. It does not reflect the losses for new sims not purchased. You could probably double these numbers with this lost growth.

Looking into my visionary crystal ball I predict that by Jan 31st 2009, LL will be in excess of 4000 sims lost with almost zero new growth. Their losses will overtake the additional funds earned as a result of the price increases. Abandonment will accelerate as another set of price increases become imminent. Shop owners and estate owners will also go negative as sales in-world drop to near zero. Many will divest of land and estates further compounding the problem. Shareholder pressure will rise until LL is forced to take action. By mid 2009 reactive price decreases across the board will be rejected due to increasing costs and a faltering business model. New products and packages designed to attract new customers will not achieve a positive result. ByQ3 2009 LL layoffs will be put in place as a cost saving measure. Service and performance will falter and bugs will increase as coders move into supporting non-SL enterprises with higher salaries. Competition will grow and a major announcement from a well known gaming company will rattle SL causing a mass exodus to a new platform with VR 3.0 technologies. The people who have been loyal customers, and who have built SL through their spending and talent will divest to other entertainment VR opportunities.

LL will look for a buyer but there will be no takers because the code is a mess and the technology is in need of a serious update. Corporate in-world investors will reject LL by the end of 2009.

Pretty gloomy huh? The sad thing is that people won't even care as the real world will effect many companies and the lives of millions in a much worse way.

For others who have been quoting these numbers, I've been using the "Reflects data through midnight, ..." date. Not sure which date is more accurate, that or one day forward, but as long as it's consistant I think it's ok..

It's posted on the economy pages, http://secondlife.com/whatis/economy_stats.php

It just shows the net loss from the previous month, it doesn't show how many renames were done that may accommodate consolidation from 4 OSs to one. Tyche Shepherd's bot is a fairly decent tracker.

Best post I've seen in a while. I think you are just about spot on with your predictions. On the competition front there will be a major alternative at a far cheaper price point by mid-2009, ready to mop up the refugees from the second price hike.

At this rate, the grid's going to have shrunk by over 10% before the price change even kicks in.. :(

If those were low prim sims that were bought then abandoned because of this mess and of course there is no way of knowing on each and everyone- but if just by chance they were, then they amount to at least $412,500 in set up fees at $250 each that LL collected for sims they no longer have to service. What a deal eh?

Yep, and it's worse than that, coz some of them were priced at US$425 on the old rate.

I got rid of one at the old rate and two at the new rate. And I'll be getting rid of another two at the old rate soon. It makes me sick. US$1775 just thrown away, but it has to be done because I refuse to pay the price hike and lose even MORE money.
