Grid still running good. Very nice job, FJ!

I'm looking forward to the launch of LLnet with a good deal of confidence.

I just wanted to say a big Congratulations & Thanks for the good work! One of the highest ever concurrent login days (Sunday the 25th) over 80k people in & all is working smoothly. I’d say all the hard work of FJ and the whole team at LL has paid off very well. Thanks!

I wouldn't say everything is working smoothly, it's been running slowly, and I've seen quite a few clouded AVs, but improved enormously from recent Sundays. Definitely going in the right direction.

Hi everyone. Last update for this forum. We certainly had a solid day on the database and stability front! 80,000+ and query load remained steady. I know there are many other quality issues that we still need to fix, lag and asset reliability are just a few. Believe me, I'm not here to declare victory on the infrastructure front! We won the battle this weekend, and have built some overhead for load, but we have a lot of work still to do!

You know, there is actually an "unforeseen" benefit from having some of LL's best engineers monitoring all points of the grid this weekend. We had no central database problems, so it gave them lots of time to identify and work problems and performance issues on other parts of the grid! As an old ops guy, I really love a captive technical audience :)

The best news from this weekend is that we didn't have to use any of our throttling mechanisms nor interrupt logins. As I have said in past postings, I promise to keep the communication flowing on our progress on the stability/scalability front. Our next big milestone remains the full activation of our private network (LLnet), which I'll address in my next scheduled monthly posting. I'll also begin outlining our server code release "roadmap" that contains much of the code re-write that we need to solidify the infrastructure.

As always, I'll end by saying THANKS for the feedback and patience!

Great...you haven't used any of the throttling mechanisms...and you also have NOT answered the questions posed on this forum about what effect disabling group queries to the db will have...One of my second life businesses relies on group invitations being able to be performed...and avatars being able to change from one group to another, 24/7...I need information that will tell me what group functions will be curtailed by your new mechanisms...PLEASE answer my questions that I have posed to you personally...in this forum...and to the concierge chat...If there are going to be issues...I need to address them now, with changes to my bot system...my system currently does a quarter million automated invitations a week for hundreds of the largest businesses and organizations in SL...and I need to know.

Ok, the database... Scripts are in the database also are they not?
I mention it because in the last couple days I have seen a substantial
increase in the sim script load that is not substantiated by the actual
scripts that are listed. In fact there has been a significant decrease
in the actual scripts but the reported load is still higher then it has
ever been.

You all are always doing so many different things between this database
upgrading while doing server deploys at the same time. I suppose this
makes it near impossible to know what is effecting what...
I estimate I am about 8ms higher then I should be. Been reading about 21ms
and should be at about 12-13... maybe less.

My compliments FJ. Everything running smooth for me here. Your way of communicating and problem solving on this weekend grid issue (together with Philip's slurl upgrade) are the best things that improved SL lately. Thanks and congrats!

Glad to hear some are experiencing an improvement, but it's not the
same for everyone. I cannot teleport, my friend did nothing but crash
and others i know are having the same as well as other issues.
Lovely weekend...

I wish to se 150.000 + online!
01-26-2009 07:18
As there are 15-16 mill "members" in SL i wish to se 1% =150.000+ Online at all times!
I remember the day in 2006 before SL hit the 1mill "members" usly it was 0.8 to 1% of all members omline! This days its only 0.3-0.4 % Last night it was bout 0.5%

How can The Lab help us to get more member to "stay" in and use SL more? I belive more HW power and stabil servers,, over time, i think 3 or 4 months IF the servers are stabil we need to se 150.000 on, As its now its to many SIMS , to many malls, to many shops for just 50.000 -60.000 members,, and if 30% are "bots" its realy only 35.000-40.000 REAL avs in and that = 2 avs a SIM in whole SL ..lol.

When i TP round to find nice malls for my shops i se a lot of empty room, and them places i se "green dots" its campers or bots! I found 3 of 50 malls last week that dident had campers or "botfarms" and had a ok rent and REAL avs.

...I am fine with spending quite a bit of my spare time to help contribute although it would be much more efficent for me to spend that 1/100 time working and pay for SL. But that would require LL to provide a way to accept payment anonymously. Exposing myself to the danger of my first life identity being linked to my SL activities (see profile) is not an option. And even if I trusted LL to keep this data confidential (which I don't) there is still the risk of it being stolen. This has happened before to companies who pay much more attention to security than LL.

If you're not proud of what you're doing in SL, and don't want it to come to light...stop doing that.

FJ...Kudos to you and the server rats. We saw a new concurrency high, over 82K on line...and nary a hiccup (that I noticed, anyway, although you did say something about a payment server problem).

Or get an alt.

Seriously, really you can't expect to move significant money internationally and completely anonymously. If you could do that, there'd be all kinds of money laundering going on in-world. That would be bad.

Paypal and CC are indeed "commonly used" by everybody else...

hello all,

Did anybody, or i'm the only one, had loss inventory since the last week crash?
since that day, an important object for me, was replaced by a very older version.

thx to all

edit : i posted a ticket, but as a non premium, i'm curious to know if i will have any response...

I am not sure if I lost any inventory but a couple of people disappeared from my friends list. The first one I noticed I thought they had taken me off their list so I did not pay much attention to it. Then I got IM's from 2 other people asking me why I took them off my friends list.

You're suggesting that nobody ever do anything in their spare time that their boss would not approve of? Seriously? That's a hoot, especially from someone who has "here in SL, you can be the person you want to be" in her profile.

I can see the Lindens still don't get it. Turning features off when the grid load gets heavy? This makes about as much sense as turning log ins off.

You need to put money into the infrastructure. Make it so the grid can support the load it gets and do it well. This will require upgrading things drastically. Yes it will require money but customer satisfaction should be number one priority!

[Linking SL to RL identity by LL directly or usage of leaked information by third parties]

Or get an alt.

An alt does not help in this scenario unless you put much work in and a pay a lot of attention. You have to make sure that you change your IP and MAC address (the second one is transmitted by the viewer as a computer id to help LL ban alts in case of abuse) between every login.

I don't know what your definition of "significant" is. In one of the sims where I have a shop I know that rentals cover more than 75% of the sim-costs. And I am sorry but we shop owners do contribute to the eco-system. Even the ones that don't spend 1st life money. We spend time creating stuff other people value enough to pay for. So that we can pay the sim owners in turn.

The only reason to own a credit card - I can think of - is to make business transactions with USA based companies easier. Does LL publish some numbers anywhere about how many of the payed/unpayed accounts are based on what region of the 1st world?

And Paypal has a no insurance policy about virtual goods. Customer protection does not issue warnings about buying or selling virtual good on Paypal without very solid reasons.

From: Alex Ella
Did you file your ticket under regular support or through the security issue? here is the link and it even mentions a reward. If what you have discovered is that bad maybe you can collect a few lindens. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Security_issues

Yes, I did post the report to Jira. And while a reward of 27.04€ is not even enough to invite someone for dinner into a cheap restaurant, I won't call it a bad joke because
it is worth 3 days of sim time.

But again: I want this vulnerabilty to be fixed. Getting some Lindens for it would be nice but discussing that has time until the bug is fixed. (And I don't belief that I will really get $L for it instead of a bad excuse, but we will see).

5 days and counting...

I don't quite understand that Sedary ;) being your self does not neccessarily imply doing things that you are embarrassed of if discovered by others.. in fact - "being myself" for me means being able to do things I am proud off ;)

anyway... I think this post was originally about somehting else.. so let me jsut say that there was 80 k people online on sunday and SL did NOT have it's usual weekend mental breakdown (at least not while i was on *giggles*).

so for a change - yay I survived an upgrade and it actually seems to work! lol. compliments ;)

One Simple Measure to Reduce Data Strain!!
01-27-2009 04:40
Ok, these are wonderful things you are doing, and thanks for all that. However, there is one simple measure that SL and Lindens can take that would make a MASSIVE impact on the data/grid strain and the occurance of login and lagg issue...REMOVE THE BOTS!! Yes, when really bored with the lagg inworld, I go all geek and go BOT hunting.... if you go on map and see where all the "people" are, it is 9 times out of 10 a place that when you go there is empty even though the map says it is full....and for the terminally curious like me, I look around and BEHOLD there is a skybox, underwater box, whatever, is a heap of bots (sometimes imaginatively called anna1, anna2, etc....to like 70 or 80, popping in and out and automatically touching the vote box, or standing there in a rather sick effort to make the island/store/club/whatever look like the place to be. It is I guess for bots, but about as useful as a bicycle to a fish. This has the effect of basically making the grid LAGGY, or logins USELESS and i'm sure that it makes the techical team's efforts all the harder with the fact that rezzing, communicating, etc. is held hostage to owner's of said islands/clubs/stores/etc. want to make it look as if they actually have something going on there. PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. I realize it makes the population/inworld visitor stats look great (74,000 online...however 60,000 are bots and therefore not an asset - yes a bit of an exaggeration, but maybe not)...but it is ruining the experience of those of us who come into SL and actually DO things....but can't because of bot-topolis.....a nasty and spreading viral infection...which may bring down the whole grid for nothing more noble then vanity and greed. Sheesh, bring back the elves I say....thanks for listening.
