Maggie, that's really bizarre, because *nothing* related to physics changed between the 1.24.10 pilot and the final 1.24.10. All that changed was the adding of some logging needed by our data warehousing team.

I know. The only thing that was more bizarre than the bug itself was the bug going away.

And I totally have no explanation for it...unless it's not a *physics* thing but a *script timing* effect. If the rezzing of the box is in a separate script from the moving of the piston, then a race condition could make the box rez either in collision with the piston or not, depending. And the additional physics calc load caused by having an avi standing on an object or not might push something over an edge resulting in a different timing outcome. Despite how rich the Prim Rig build is, it's pretty sparsely loaded for a full region.

I'm sure if it was my build, I could tweak the scripting it to make the effect go away. But this is illustrative of how difficult it can be to preserve the behavior of legacy content, and this gadget must be the Mother of All Legacy Content.

I'm sure glad I made a video of the strange behavior (it's attached to SVC-3580), and had it witnessed by several other people, because otherwise I wouldn't believe it either.

Does Spock show up in the video? Did he have a beard?

Because I'm wondering if maybe you were just briefly in the mirror universe....

No, the mirror universe, bizarro-land, is one where things work. Where the network doesn't fail daily, were updates have bug fixes and increased functionality instead of just decreased functionality, higher prices and more bugs.

In bizarro land the investers buy new spec hardward instead of stacking 16 sims on a 3 year old POS server.

In bizarro land you can move faster then a walk and not get stuck inside walls.

In bizarro land you dont require a 2008 videocard to view 1995 graphics.

Keep on rocking!

If I was, I was there several times, because I saw this behavior on at least four separate occasions before ANWR was synched up with the current 1.24.10.

I often use ANWR as a safe spot to wait out a region restart, or attempt to short circuit failing teleports (ya cain't get thear from heah). I don't usually pay much attention to the prim pump. But there's a clue for the scavenger hunt for a particular Linden's bear on ANWR's lower deck... and it's interesting to note that SLRR's tracking system hosted there is back in operation again, too.

No, Spock wasn't there that I saw, nor his beard, nor his bear, nor Spock's Beard ( http://www.spocksbeard.com )

Since the last rolling restart, and a couple days prior, there have been 6 days with known issues of failed transactions - database instability - failed logins - extended periods of lag with no explanation - and the list goes on. Your attempts to smoothly transition to a 3 tier system for sims is costing EVERYONE money but you.

Traffic is down, refunds and double payments abound, constant complaints to content creators and business owners - these are all issues within your control and not ours. In this effort to line your pockets (Linden Labs) you are quickly killing the economy which supports your business model. Linden Labs should be offering prorated rebates on tiers to everyone for such poor performance. If my cable goes out for an hour the cable company credits me for that entire day. With your "UPGRADES", we lose, and our account balances prove it. In other words, do better testing or leave the system alone. You're creating a huge mess that the residents can't afford anymore.

and yes ... this is on topic

In fact, the regular problems with the database started before the rolling restart of 1.24.10.

The problem is not 1.24.10, the problem is that our database is being pushed close to the edge again. We're working on ways that can reduce the load on the database. But, again, it's not because of 1.24.10, nor because of the decisions surrounding homestead pricing.

and? I understand you're speaking to a certain issue, but it doesn't speak to perception of the users nor the lack of care for damage done to business in the process.

I don't see any comment from him about the recent troubles or how LL feels about it, other than the troubles are not related to the new 1.24.10 release.

What would you like him to do about the problems you mention?

Since this is as close as I'll probably ever get to having an open conversation about quality control within Second Life with a Linden (or maybe even a corporate official), I'll respond by saying that I gave a good example of what could be done in my first post.

I find it unlikely that LL does not have the money to fix the database issue, and if that is the main issue causing all problems then it should be addressed. I also feel, in my uneducated opinion, should the database issues be fixed then the server rollouts would have far fewer issues.

Further, to answer your pointed question, here is a list of some things that could be done by someone of Authority:

1) Apologize
2) Fix the main issue in a timely fashion
3) Offer prorated tier rebates for interruption of service
4) Do a global email with detailed information updating the user base from someone in charge.

It's called good customer service.

Back on topic, could it not be an issue that the server updates are causing undue and added stress to the database which would normally be sufficient should these "updates" not have taken place? Could it not be the procedures of rollout that are causing that added stress? This is like watching a chef try to broil a T-bone with a Bic lighter. The lighter isn't big enough .. get a grill!

Yeah.. That's why I asked what you wanted Prospero to do about your issues. I'm not sure he has the authority to do all that. Could be wrong, though.

Maybe you should hit up Enus or Soft Linden's office hours if you want to talk about QA stuff. For customer service type things, Jack is probably the best one to yell at. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Office_hours .

edit: /me throws a sheep at Prospero before he has a chance to delete her off-topic posts!

Look, I've just deleted a few posts, and I'm closing this thread (as the rolling restart is now complete.)

The tactic of inserting your lengthy gripe, and then adding a single straw-man on-topic paragraph at the end that has already been addressed in another thread on this forum, is not going to trick me into leaving your long off-topic gripe in this thread.

Please, people, stay on topic.
