Depends on where you're counting from. They turned off BBC over a year ago (has it been 2 yet?) in preparation for a forum software upgrade.

Just because some people are poorly socialized a**holes is not an excuse to allow them to run rampant on your company-owned website. At some point, LL has to sit back and say "do we REALLY want our name on this stuff where corporate clients can read it, where new residents are reading it?" The old General and Off Topic forums were an embarrassment. Whether anyone likes it or not, this is a corporate website, not a playground for people bored at work who want to flame each other all day long. When SLU goes up in drama flames the only person whose reputation is damaged is Cristiano's for letting it go on too long. When the SL forums go up in drama flames it damages LL as a company and makes them look sloppy and negligent. Very different risk. I agree. Also, I would like to say that I would prefer either upgrade to the current form of Vbulletin and leave everything alone or shift to the Digg model. Personally no one has noticed the only populated parts of the forum is the instructional ones ie. Content creation and Classifieds. I believe this is actually the best. SLU and SLsurvivor can handle the Resident chatter. I recognize that resident chatter needs to be somewhere but if it is to honestly return here then I feel a: those who are currently banned should remain so. This is fairness. Most were banned because of their disruptive nature and those who have migrated to other 3rd party sites haven't changed. They are still disruptive. B: banning should be harsh. As Isablan said, the corporate forum is no place for a Dramafest. As Second Citizen forums pointed out, you can't have unmoderated forums. As SLU points out, you can have character assassinations in a moderated forums. So I believe even the discussion of certain topics should be out. Why? Because they lead to drama. Ie: she ripped my texture, stole my clothes and resold them, stole my land, its a griefer, stalker, spammer, and general b**tard. And I am in favor of in world suspensions for forum violations. C: I do believe all should have access to the forums. I do believe that only account holders should post. And it should be the current system to slow down abuse. Resident Answers failed because of insesant drama generated by a small insistant few who always want to b*tch about anything and everything. Doubt this? Read the old archives. You will see for yourself. The same thing happened to Second Citizen. The only thing prevents it happening to SLU is that Christano is heavy with the ban hammer and friends with certain individuals so they tone it down. So a resurrection of the forums needs a heavy hand against the drama as well as freedom of the content creation areas (of which neither of the current 3rd party forums have active) And finally I feel that if you feel you are being persecuted on the forums you need to be able to end it effectively. Thats all I have for now. _____________________

I am beginning to come around to the view held by Isablan and Thunderclap. LL has rediscovered the usefulness of a 'bulletin board' format, and wants to reclaim the forums for corporate communication.
I'm sure LL will be more than happy to see the content fora continue, if they can after the conversion. (However, I believe moving away from vb will probably be tragic in terms of the loss of usable knowledge in the content fora; it will be the LSL wiki disaster again in spades). As for RA, I see the group of "Answerers" who used to participate regularly here dissipating to their own blogs and lives, virtual and real. This may just be the natural rhythm of things, or it may be because of the constant churn and anxiety caused by events in the forums since 2006, with attention from LL being "too little too late". The overall quality of the "answers" seems to me to have dropped over the last couple of months, and fewer questioners are willing to fight their way past the social threads. So most real questions are ending up in "Technical Issues", which I imagine new users have some trouble finding. It is possible that a new crop of "Answerers" will show up after the conversion, particularly in the unlikely event that LL actually invites people to help in the forums. Possible. If that happens, then a tightly moderated RA may still prove to be a help to LL. Personally, I think LL has never internally acknowledged that RA was of any great use, so I doubt they will take real steps to preserve it. Perhaps Isablan and Thunderclap are right, and they shouldn't, given the risk that free speech may present for LL's corporate vision. . |

I'd like to see a forum where people can help each other with popular products, especially freebie ones, like MLP/MLPV2, sit positioners, teleporters, etc. I currently do this for MLPV2 on the scripting tips forum, but it doesn't really belong there. It would get lost in the 'resident answers' forum.
I can't think of a good title, though! Maybe after some sleep. ![]() |

I suggest closing the forums completely. They serve no purpose other than to give a small but very vocal minority a place to push their agendas. The resident answers section is heavily abused by these same people. Wow, you're really missing something. I get a lot of help on the forums for content creation! I get a lot of help for general issues in Resident Answers. And other threads are simply fun. For the ones where folks are just pushing their agendas, I hit the X button, top right corner, and they go away. |

Just saw this on the blog about the blog and forums.
http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/10/23/update-on-linden-lab-blog-revamp/#more-2703 Update on Linden Lab Blog Revamp Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 1:30 PM by: Robin Linden I’m happy to report that we have some great things ahead for the Linden Lab Blog. We are on track with a multi-stage process of upgrading our Web presence, including both the Blog and the Forums. Our goal? To improve the information you get about Second Life and enhance our dialogue with you. We’ve put a lot of thought into how best to expand the usefulness of the blog and forums without slowing down the efforts of those working on grid stability and reliability. And, we’re making great progress with the project. One foundational change we are making is adding in authentication so it’s there for the blog as well as forums. This is valuable because it adds better security and uses Second Life names in a consistent way. One major goal is to implement single-sign-on (SSO.) This means Second Life Residents who log in with their avatar (account) names, for instance to comment on blog posts, would also be logged into the Second Life Forums. This seemingly small but fundamental change will, over time, allow us to greatly expand the convenience and utility of the blog (and in the next phase, the forums). The work to match up and perfect authentication and passwords for SSO to the blogs and forums has added time and complexity to the process, but when it goes live it will enable us to acknowledge and showcase active participants, including those across key international language groups. We aren’t announcing a specific timeframe for the completion of each phase of the project right now, but we will keep you updated. Here’s some security (and other) benefits of the new system: • Linden Lab employees won’t need to set up or maintain the blog servers or software, so we can stay focused on our core priorities. Instead, the blog project will be managed by a company whose strength is that kind of work, and thus, the system will be secure, robust and fully scalable. • The new blog will feature authentication systems, a plug-in architecture, clustering and multiple database options. • The backend will also feature everything you would expect, including regular vulnerability assessments, intrusion detection, and fast response times in the event of any type of problem. And because it’s a hosted solution, it will also offer managed monitoring, proactive software upgrades and daily backups to our secure storage area network, as well as full redundancy. As we have said before, the Official Second Life blog will continue to be Linden Lab’s public face, for policy and other important announcements, and updates from our executive team members. The goal here will be to keep you informed about our major efforts. We will also introduce a set of community-facing Linden-authored blogs. These will cover topics of interest to specific groups, for instance, activities and information for new residents, builders and scripters, solution providers, educators, business owners and so on. They will be less formal, and will allow Linden topic experts to talk about their areas of expertise, and hear your feedback and ideas. You’ll find familiar Lindens as well as meet new Lindens in these blogs. We will also continue to invite conversations into the forums, as we’ve done recently, to allow Residents from all time zones to participate in much more involved conversation threads with Lindens and other Residents than is possible in blog comments. _____________________
