Yes, in a word, we're still working on this. Hopefully I'll have more to share soon.

Thanks,

Now that you have let in all the cross-posting advertising spammers, where are the moderators to go with it?

About That Forum Facelift....
07-17-2008 18:02
I want to report back to you, to let you know that progress is being made, even though visible progress has been slow.

For one, I expect to have new forum Guidelines for your viewing and commenting pleasure in the relatively near future, and the same is true for renaming / reorganizing some threads, as you have suggested.

I'll make sure we share details with you as we're able to do so, but rest assured, I haven't forgotten this project.

Thanks for your long patience!

Katt with all due respect at this point I think that I speak for 99% of forum users when we say we have run out of patience and have lost faifth that LL is going to do this. to upgrade vBulletin would take maybe 2 hours at the most, maybe a few more if something went wrong (unlikely but possible) and had to be fixed or rolled back from backups (which I'm guessing even LL is smart enough to make at regular intervals) World of Warcraft is down once a week for several hours and they still have their user base and know what? the userbase actually appreciates this down time because it ensures a stable platform the rest of the 6 days 18 or so hours a week. It isn't of course entirely your fault because much of this was started and really became entrenched before you were hired for the job of human sacrifice but we're pretty damn pissed off at LL and their/your feet dragging and unless you have news saying that your taking down the forums for the upgrade and they'll be down for a couple hours to do so I don't think anyone in the mood to hear any more statements about "progress" on the facelift.

CCed to Katt Linden and the Forum facelift forum thread for double redundancy, any IM's or other communications from Katt or any other linden on the topic will be cced in the same fashion as necessary.

Well, spoken a bit stonger than many of us would have, but essentially correct. We really aren't after much, it's only a forum, just fix the broken features, we don't need new colors or windlight :)

...this thread is still alive? Lindens are still working on it? Holy s***.

As a side note, Tarn Adams managed to migrate his Dwarf Fortress forums from Ultimate Bulletin Board to SMF (Simple Machines Forum) in 1 day. He planned for two because he needed to import the forum database through two other forum software installations before it could be imported into SMF.

So, I'm wondering what's going on here?

I'm also surprised that this still has some life in it.

Katt, the fact that you even posted with an update is alone a good sign. Thank you.

I would like to remind, as mentioned a little above here, that the software needs an update - urgently. In your case its not as easy as Gordon or Draco18s may think, as a good portion of it happens to be re-written for custom use (which is one of the reasons updates have been so horrid for y'all). The only good news with that is - in theory, and with a little forethought - the conversion or update hell should only need to be done once, and things should be relatively smooth from there...

/salute

All I want is a search engine that doesn't tell me an LSL function isn't found even though I know it is mentioned because there have been a zillion threads on it.

What I would love to see
08-06-2008 14:59
What I would love to see or do on SL:

1.- Change clothing off line, arrange inventory off line and then come online and get it all ready, trying to change clothes or arrange inventory with lag is horrible.

2.- To be able to change avatars without loging out completely from the game.

3.- To be able to "group" two or three people and talk in group chat!

You mean different from selecting those people in your friends list and hitting IM for a conference?

How to start a group voice chat with a few friends
08-07-2008 18:04
To start a voice conversation with people on your Friends list inworld:

* Click on the "Communicate" button in the bottom left corner of the viewer window.
* The "Communicate" box opens and the Friends tab is open.
* Multi-select the friends you'd like to call by holding "Ctrl" and clicking on each person's name.
* When you've selected everyone you wish to call, click the IM/Call button.
* A "Friends Conference" tab will open.
* Click the "Call" button at the top of the "Friends Conference" window to begin the conference with your group of friends.

There's lots more about voice at: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Voice_FAQ#How_do_I_start_a_group_voice_chat_with_a_few_friends_.28from_my_SL_Friends_list.29.3F

Such a dreamer.

I mean, come on, a scripting forum where you can actually search for the function and event names used in the scripting language?

You must have been reading too much science fiction lately.

Whattya think this is, the 22nd century or something?

New Forum Discussion: Forum Guidelines
08-07-2008 21:08
I've opened a thread for discussion of the proposed new Forum Guidelines, for those interested.

I'll be participating in this new discussion thread, on and off, until Tuesday August 12. Your patience will be appreciated, because I will only be able to read and respond in bursts, not continually -- but I will be interested to hear what you think, and I will read all your comments.

These guidelines are an attempt to clarify, in one place, not just rules, but some things that seem to confuse some people, and also our guidelines for what you can expect in the way of moderation (and penalties.)

I welcome your constructive criticism.

And thank you

I do know the software needs to be updated, and that we'll likely need to rearrange/rename various threads -- I haven't just read your comments, here, I've printed them and gone through with multiple different colors of highlighters, actually....

I know it has been a long time since Robin started this thread, but you will see changes, and one, now, is your invitation to check out and debate over the proposed new Forum Guidelines.

/341/0d/275405/1.html

Change won't be overnight, sorry to say, but we're taking your suggestions very seriously.

Thanks!

Yes I think the intention of the original problem is that you can ONLY make a group chat with people on your friends list. Since peoples names are now hyperlinked to their profiles in group chat, it should be possible to 'Shift-Click' people from public chat and start a conference.

Adding everyone you want to talk to you friends list quickly leads to your list getting bloated and unmanageable. Personally I hate getting friend requests from people I have only just met, or have never met but they are somewhere in the vicinity of my avatar.

Perhaps silly, but not actually a joke. What I mean is that I've gone through and noted various suggestions for things like renaming or new forum threads, various feature requests, and so on, and they're being considered as part of our next steps.
