gotta remember one thing, though. this is Second Life, and any animal you shoot at is liable to shoot back.

often with higher firepower...

Oh snap!

Seriously though, aside from the combat enabled areas most places don't like folks armed to the teeth carrying weapons around. Some places let you wear them in holsters, but if you have one in your hands its considered live and ready to use. Which puts folks on edge, they are there to have a good time or collaborate on things, and don't need a trigger happy gunman barging in on things. That sort of thing leads to an AR and banishment from that location.

Even the smallest of avatars can return fire with a gun the size of a mack truck. :D

I mean, they are playing animals that stand and talk. If I treat them like an animal (as in pulling a gun on them), they act all offended.

So in real life you just go around shooting innocent animals? I bet that makes you feel all big and bad huh.

When I am using my Dragon avatar, I get a lot of reactions. Logical, after all, in Chinese Mythology, the Dragon is the highest being.

Sometimes, specialy when I use the 5 headed giant Dragon avatar, I get reactions like "OMG, What a monster." I usually ask them if they wanna see a "real" monster, and when the answer is "yes" I change to a fully human avatar.

Succes garanteed! :D

When I use my dragon avatar, guys stop hitting on me. In fact, they tend to just TP away... I don't know why, except maybe they don't really like redheads?

Oh don't worry. If you do that, I would certainly treat you as what you really are - a griefer - , and go ahead and AR you.

It's only a matter of time before furry sex is banned in SL as broadly offensive and they all gotta get spayed/neutered.

Oh no, obviously that's just silly. All the RL dogs are wearing human avatars so they don't draw attention to themselves :D

And often vice versa.

Just let an avi come in looking like a 4yo girl, and everyone raises a stink, but treat an avi that looks like a wolf like a wolf, and I am the bad guy.

And it is all about appearances anyway, isn't it? They want to be treated as equals? Equal to what..a HUMAN? Then be a human..?

I guess if I got to know them, I might find them swell...but I really don't think is a good idea to befriend a predator (wolves, dragons, bunnies with fangs), and I feel its poss psychologically harmful to have a conversation with potential food (cows).

Dogs would be an exception. Dogs coexist well with hunter-humans. But no-one is a dog here. Why is that?

do not try to understand these things..i have seen cases like this where someone put too much thought into something so simple and over complicated it soo much that the veins in their head started to expand... i was like "ewww look at your head it's all veiny and red"..
then their eyes get all bulgy and i was like "OM gAWD!!! your eyes look like an owl on crack and wanting more" and not long after that their brains came out there butts

then i was like "Gross i am so out of here" so i called 911 and left..I SWARE!!!

@ Todd, that they're inversely proportionate to his mental capacity? (with amputees being of roughly average intelligence)

I know a certain scripter who had a 3ft nothing mouse av who upon being harassed would sic a fun little toy on someone. it teleported them home, then followed them and crashed their home sim. (ll has since broken both functionalities, but it was amusing while it lasted)...

curiously there are a lot of content creators among the furries, especially scripters and builders. a higher percentage than any other sub group from what I've seen.

There's a few like that in RL, but in SL? The mesh is so badly done the base avatar often looks like a bunch of disconnected prims. You ever sat down and looked at the gap between the stomach and the chest sections? And the avatar butt is so ugly I can't stand looking at one that doesn't have a tail. Some of the recent sculpted prim avatars are smoother and better articulated than the underlying mesh.
/me wonders what Argent has been doing looking at people's butts! :p

LOL

"I can see how the original poster would be confused"????????????

This is SL. What confusion is there when you see a dog avatar? Do you think that a dog in RL is accessing SL to live out the virtual life he can't have in the real?

Whatever. Don't make excuses for absolute moronic troll stupidity.

So... my vote is for "hit and run troll".

Pretty easy to explain - they have to create those complex heads and body modifications. So that community has had more need to have a greater number of people who can customize things.

I've always assumed that most furries are humans dressed up in animal outfits.

That's actually a common assumption, but almost always false. Furries are furries, plain and simple. That would be like thinking Bugs Bunny is a human in a rabbit suit in all those cartoons. I've seen very few actual fursuit avatars. The vast majority are actual anthropomorphic animals.

From: Marcush Nemeth
Because not all furries are about I'm a wolf, I'm not human".
Some are, but there's also those that derived their style from some Anime or sci-fi styles, where furry humanoids are a result of genetic engineering (Like Splinter from Ninja Turtles) or simply from another world (I believe Larry Niven had some good stories about feline humanoid aliens, the idea was later used in the Wing Commander games).

Most of my personal avatars, and a few of my for-sale ones, are creatures from my own sci-fi creation. Some are natural, some are engineered, all are flesh-and-blood sapient beings, not humans in suits :p

As for the why, a friend of mine said it best: "In a world like Second Life, why be human?" I'm human in my first life, so there's no appeal to me to be human in SL when I can be anything I want. I also find animals more interesting to look at in SL than human avatars.
