I mean, they are playing animals that stand and talk. If I treat them like an animal (as in pulling a gun on them), they act all offended.

Just let an avi come in looking like a 4yo girl, and everyone raises a stink, but treat an avi that looks like a wolf like a wolf, and I am the bad guy.

And it is all about appearances anyway, isn't it? They want to be treated as equals? Equal to what..a HUMAN? Then be a human..?

I guess if I got to know them, I might find them swell...but I really don't think is a good idea to befriend a predator (wolves, dragons, bunnies with fangs), and I feel its poss psychologically harmful to have a conversation with potential food (cows).

Dogs would be an exception. Dogs coexist well with hunter-humans. But no-one is a dog here. Why is that?

srsly?

Not supposed to point a gun at another avatar in Second Life unless it's an agreed part of roleplay usually on a roleplay sim. To do so is usually seen as griefing that person. (Doesn't matter if it is an animal avatar or human or furry or robot or.....)

Of all animals on this planet, the one you refer to as 'human' is probably the most dangerous of all. Time after time the Human has done deeds, that are, for an animal that rightout claims to be the most intelligent, hideous and repulsive.

So I agree with you that humans should never treat any other animal as equal. That would be highly insulting for those animals.

When I am using my Dragon avatar, I get a lot of reactions. Logical, after all, in Chinese Mythology, the Dragon is the highest being.

Sometimes, specialy when I use the 5 headed giant Dragon avatar, I get reactions like "OMG, What a monster." I usually ask them if they wanna see a "real" monster, and when the answer is "yes" I change to a fully human avatar.

Succes garanteed! :D

I've always assumed that most furries are humans dressed up in animal outfits.

If and when LL updates the avatar meshes, as well as a few minor tweaks to the human one to give smoother joint articulation, I think it would be good if they could introduce a 'quadruped' mesh, which you could alter with sliders to get a dog, cat or whatever.
That way animals would achieve equality with humans.

I would stay human, though.

Got to give them at least one. They did snag a couple out of the gate.

I was just reading an article in the New Yorker about certain outsider species like Burmese pythons and Nile monitors that are breeding in the Florida swamps. It's only a matter of time before there are human fatalities and biologists have expressed the sentiment that it's time to stop studying them and start killing them.

I believe your particular skills and temperament are needed in Florida.

My reaction is "Oh, that guy likes dressing as a dragon in SL. He must really like dragons."

I can see hows the orginal poster would be confused. Most folk just think that avatars are just avatars, and it seems like alot of the furries I've met take their avatars a little more personally, even creating a character around it and roleplaying out animal traits.

To someone unfamiliar with that sort of behavior it might be confusing how to react/interact.

Especially if he asks about it somewhere and gets trashed as an Obvious Troll.

gotta remember one thing, though. this is Second Life, and any animal you shoot at is liable to shoot back.

often with higher firepower...

You have missed the point Scout. Unless you are forced (somehow?) into some idiotic role play (which reminds me of the kid's joke: "Bang, bang, you're dead", "No I'm not, rumble, rumble, I'm a tank.";) then you should treat these "characters" as you would the grownups who dress up at Hallowe'en. Ignore them unless they bother you for money or attention at which point you can tell them what you think of them since they are encroaching on your personal space.

My alt is a realistic dog, it's simply to do with running around, jumping, being a yobbo and free, that kinda thing, also I put him on a light weight SL and have him follow me around, I'll build him some stuff soon too. I do it cus I'm stuck in a city for a few years and miss all my animals.

As for pulling a gun on a dog or any animal in SL, they will tell you to go to hell, shoot you back or something... just like they would r/l if they could talk your language and use guns.

None of my animals r/l or SL would be put near a hunter. I remember my mum saying when she was a kid how a hunter came onto her families land and shot himself by mistake and how bloody funny the irony was, there was certainly no sympathy...

As for furries I knew a few in the late 80s/early 90s, they wore lycra animal skins and made up their faces and hung out, just like people going to a medieval fair, wearing old costumes to role play old battles n so forth, they just dug animals and wanted to be one sort of I think, I never really asked.

Some animals smell things better, especially the fear of a wild human boy with his big gun :D

I mean, just because something doesn't exist or is intrinsically harmful in real life... If I make an effort to simulate it, people get all offended. =^-^=

Actually according to one of the bugs/fudd cartoons, 'Hare Brush' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hare_Brush , he owned a mansion and a yaught, but started dressing in a bunny costume and acting like he was a rabbit.

Bugs gets mistaken for Elmer and by way of a psychiatrist 'cured' of the belief that he is a rabbit, thus assuming Elmer's identity, at which point the IRS promptly arrest him for tax evasion and Elmer reveals that his playing a rabbit was just a dodge :).

As for furries, some of us identify with animal avatars just as animal spirits have been respected, honoured and/or worshiped throughout history.
