I used to go to a mIRC chat room a bit and I (and most of the people in the chat room) used to really hate people posing as the opposite gender. For me, it wasn't from a dislike of people experimenting or wanting to be a woman. It was the deceit, it was always so hidden and people were sexually and emotionally hurt. Romances of various levels happened for people and to me it was highly irresponsible to mislead someone in that way. But here in SL is so different, it's not hidden, it's also accepted. I think that goes along way. My opinion on it has changed a lot from being here. I now basically don't care what the av is playing, also I trust that if I got close enough to someone (that it would matter to me) I could safely ask and they could safely answer truthfully.

Holy necropost Batman. I sat there reading the first page, going "I don't know a single one of these people" when, LOL, I realized it was an old thread.
Carry on, carry on.

From: Lindal Kidd Ephraim, and you others who so smugly think you can tell a person's RL gender from their av ... Sorry, I missed that dig yesterday. In my defense I wouldn't say I'm smug about it but I guess that might come through in my choice of words. It's hard to strike a balance between making a fairly complex point in a post and not getting a bit wordy as Lexxi inferred. I think it's fair to say that after coming to grips with the nuts and bolts of perception itself, differences of gender and sexuality tend to be the first aspects of life that we pick up on as infants when we focus on those all-important others, our parents. Playing with gender is a difficult act to pull off for that reason: we're all experts on some level or other and it's not something I mean to be smug about. From: Lindal Kidd And you know what? It doesn't matter. I could care less what sort of meat sack is behind the monitor. What matters is, what sort of person is this? Is she kind? Is he honest? SL is a wonderful place to get to know the REAL person, without all those pesky appearances to color judgement and get in the way. It doesn't matter much to me neither. My cardinal rule is to never criticise another resident for their choices in SL: one of the main reasons I don't care for RL details is that I'm not interested in how closely an av may or may not reflect the account holder's true nature. The av is a creative exercise. What does matter is the disappointment of putting time and effort into engaging with someone only to find that disjunction between their RL and SL personalities is glaringly obvious. I sure wouldn't abuse them for it but it would be the last time I'd put myself in that situation with them. Leaving aside issues of gender and sexuality, I can imagine that a 'giggle' from a werewolf would go down like a lead balloon and that's the very same bum effect I'm talking about.

Right, it's the were-hyenas that giggle. Werewolves howl. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swC8f0quXEwYou think that's a laughing matter, buddy, do you?

Jeepers. You're a mine of useful information this morning. Interesting how the grave-robbing ghoul aspect of lycanthropy has been played down in the West but it's very much to the fore with this werehyena thing. I have to say, I've got a real soft spot for animals in general (which doesn't stop me eating the usual varieties) and wolves are real handsome creatures but I despise everything about hyenas from their appearance and behaviour through to that humpy, cowering gait.
