From: Ishtara Rothschild Well, I personally think those 98% could be true for the sexually active part of the female SL population simple test to see if you're dealing with a real woman: if she's looking for sex, she's a he. But who cares? Lol, not true at all, and I'm talking about voice verified females (friends I have chatted with for long periods of time and no, it isn't a voice changer, I've heard those and they are laughable). I know they are having pixel sex in SL because they talk about it. I think your data is back in the days of Compuserve. I agreed with most of the rest of your main post though. This may be a case where it looks different to each person based upon their own experiences, though. I tend to think the 'lesbians' dressed in mismatched tack from head to toe, with gigantor chesticles and freebie shoes who walk up and offer immediate sex or even shout it out loud to anyone, are guys in RL, but whatever - as you said, if someone is THAT worried, don't go there. I've read again some guys stating they like to look at a pretty av and get freebies so that is why they play a woman. Fine with me but I just have a hard time understanding the reasoning at least of the second part. IRL at least, you could give me all the freebies for a male wardrobe you wanted to and I would still go "uh, thanks" and drop it at Goodwill, because I'm not a guy and I don't want to live as one. (Same would apply in SL) And what about RL hetero guys who are female avs and then have pixel 'sex' or play, with male avs? What do they tell themselves?

From: Osprey Therian I'm not protective of my real-life identity but some people are, for reasons we shall never know (I reckon). I don't think it matters much - at least to me it doesn't. I enjoy the people I know as their SL selves and I don't actually think of their real-life selves at all. /me nods. In my RL what you see is what you get. Actually the same is true of my SL.

Oh ya, because women do not seek sex? We sit at home very prim and proper and don't even cross our legs too tightly for fear of self stimulation. Women don't seek sex? What kind of inane remark is that? Coming from a maker of some crazy sex stuff, I would think your RL would have given you more experience than to leave you believing that women do not seek sex. No, of course we don't go to bars for pick ups. No, of course We don't hook-up at concerts. Of course we don't make a "Love Shack" out of storage rooms aboard U.S. aircraft carriers that are used for those special sex-you-up moments with a lucky sailor. LOL..that is too funny. No, women do not seek sex, not at all.

If you upload a picture of yourself holding up a card with these exact words i say in the next 60 seconds.. You might be a woman on the internet.. if you last more than 3 minutes in cybor sex and don't hang up without saying goodbye.. You might be a woman on the internet..

nick I don't care if people portray another gender for one thing SL is a place where a lot of transgender people seem to find a place to spread their wings. Only time I mind when a man portrays an SL woman is if they do it so badly they give other SL women or even RL women a bad name.
For one thing - guys - get out of the blingy newbie shoes, and mismatched mini outfits. Also don't try and _actively_ make people think you are a RL female, (if I had my druthers they'd stop being so aggro about it; not that I can or should stop anyone) avoiding the question is another story.
At some point 'male behavior' typically comes out, as I'm sorry, a RL (hetero) man portraying an SL female is a form of parody.

Usually when it's up close and personal because it takes near genius for a guy to pull off that brand of RP. The same goes for females playing males: it sticks out a mile (fnarr, fnarr).

The same goes for females playing males: it sticks out a mile (fnarr, fnarr). Probably so yes and I'd argue they may be a bit on the transgender side if so. Although, frankly, the transgender M to F I know - also still have a lot of male behavior, possibly from being *treated as* males in society, in real life. I think they are spared certain things and afforded certain other entitlements or allowances, especially if closeted/assumed to be standard hetero male. (I realise I am speaking in very blanket terms here but mindful of space/topic.) I'd be curious what behaviors 'give away' a RL female playing an SL male in 'close quarters' - and har on your pun. Lol. I'd also, on pause for second thought, be curious what you have noticed/experienced, as a male, that for you points out "that's a RL male" in an SL female av. Maybe different things make us grit our teeth. (har?)

From: Melita Magic I'd be curious what behaviors 'give away' a RL female playing an SL male in 'close quarters' - and har on your pun. Lol. I have given this a great deal of thought and it's still hard to put my finger on it (Jesus, these puns really aren't intentional). I guess that's the problem: if it were easily explained then far more residents would be successful at playing roles of the opposite gender. As far as I am concerned, a big part of the SL game is to project a persona through some pretty clunky communications media. Chat and IM require a real flair for the written word, quick thinking and *fast* typing skills whereas voice requires good acting skills and often voice-modification software in the case of someone playing a member of the opposite sex. The latter has some unavoidable drawbacks such that a woman's voice tends to come across as a little too 'silky' when it is distorted to a lower, male register. Another important factor is empathy, which is very much built into good RL sexual relations but which, of necessity, has to be synthesised through these crude communications media and expressed by our extremely limited Barbie and Ken avatars. Maintaining empathy in an intimate exchange takes levels of skill and patience that are easily tested when either, both or all of the parties concerned is not the Real McCoy. I find straight RL males are hopelessly bad at playing females in SL because, however extensive their experience of women might be, their hearts just aren't in it. Gay RL males tend to get it wrong because they are overly selective about the characteristics of female appearance and behaviour they exhibit. Quite often they can be ignorant of female sexuality, which will show almost immediately. Straight RL women are not good at playing either type of SL male because, like their male counterparts, their hearts just aren't in it. I'm pretty sure that a lot of straight women have tried their hand at cruising as a gay male since it the fastest, most efficient way to get laid in SL - and they are hopeless at it. Gay RL women easily overdo the macho thing to the extent they can be every bit as camp as the blinged up barbie a gay man can easily project. These aren't hard and fast rules, just my observation of the variety of types I've come across (there I go again) in both RL and SL. I think it's true to say that RL transgender residents have a deal more reference points to model their behaviour so they might very well be more successful at projecting themselves as being of the opposite sex. Nevertheless they are still subject to the same crude means of communication within SL that the rest of us have to accept. Deeper characteristics of the RL persona are invariably amplified at some point - especially in the course of pixel rumpy-pumpy.

My take on this is I dont care if your a man playing a women, a women playing a man or a dog playing a cat it make no difference to me till... as a women you come into my IM and hit on me. When i politely tell you i am not interested in women to then be told oh hang im really a man? Well like that will suddenly make me fancy you. To then log out and come back as a male and pick up where you left off you will be insulted by me. The only time i think this is an issue is if you know the other person would be uncomfortable with what your doing or the relationship is gowning. Remember Mushrooms grow well in BS trust and honesty dont

Why most guys that pose as females are not honest about it and say it in their profiles? Some do, but it's rare.

From: nick64 Quandry sl is only a roleplaying game. Maybe for you it is. For MANY of us, it is not a "role playing game". I AVOID people who only role play and have no idea how to act themselves in SL - and yes there are people who only RP and stay in their RP persona as long as they are in SL, which to me is annoying so i avoid them.

Interestingly enough one of my RL family that has been in SL nearly as long as I have is a crossdresser both RL and SL. Now I am not talking about some waifish man that really can pass as a woman. I am talking about an ex Bullrider with a beard. There is absolutely no way to mistake that he is a MAN wearing a ballgown. He's been all over SL wearing his own sort of crossdressing and has recieved NO negative responses. He's often said to me that he wonders if its just the shock of seeing it keeping people silent or if in SL they just don't care. Either one is fine by him. He like womens clothing and sees no reason not to do what he likes.

From: Darkness Anubis He like womens clothing and sees no reason not to do what he likes. And more power to him. Cross dressing is kind of complicated in that it neither reflects sexuality nor does it necessarily involve an attempt to conceal gender. Straight men and women will do it for the simple reason that they like it without any desire to attract a member of their own sex. It occurs to me that cross dressing often goes unremarked in women: a former partner occasionally used to wear my (clean) boxer shorts under a tightly belted pair of my old jeans. I thought it was cute but I'm sure she would have had second thoughts if I had shown an inclination to wear one of her thongs with a pair of her flimsy silk pedal pushers over them.

It's horribly unfair, but yes. I've come to the conclusion that this is not some social conditioning. Women tend to look much better in men's clothing than men look in women's clothing. Sorry, guys.

There's a long tradition of women looking sharp in men's duds whether they're dragging up in a tux or roughing it in a grubby pair of jeans. Mind you, that guy from Japan did a lot more for Maybelline way back in the eighties than any gal ever did.

Men look better in mens clothing that's as colorful and fancy as women's clothing, but ruffles and slashed sleeves and lace cuffs are just horribly out of style... so what's a bloke to do once he gets home from the Renaissance Festival?
