Should we bother trying to keep this forum open?

Old vendettas are still manifesting as well. I see no difference in the moderation style of the new forums. As for the new flog or borum or whatever Pink has opened the pandora's box of asking for feedback about a certain feature so hey why not everyone pile on in and list what all features need to be removed? Head on over and get your feedback in here: https://blogs.secondlife.com/message/13541#13541

From: Mickey Vandeverre So Ray....out of curiosity, and not sure if you were around then.....what was it like the first week this forum went up? (and I say first week to the other, knowing the Q&A has been around for a while - but it was the first week we were told to use it as a "forum." Everyone was bursting with joy? No tweaking required? I'm not sure if this is what you meant: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/blog/2009/05/28/check-out-second-life-answers-now-in-betaIf you look at the comments, it was clear that ppl took it immediately as a forum replacement. On May 29, 2009, Catherine Linden said: From: Catherine Linden We are currently designing new forums and discussion groups using the same software we use for the blogs but we have no plans to cut off access to the current forums. When the changeover happens (no date at this time btw), we'll link to the old forums as an archive so that everyone can continue to reference.
The comments are really interesting reading, especially when you think of LL's assertions that everyone is over the moon with happiness. .

Ugh....every time I read that thread...the only thing I hear is the "go play" remark. Seven - I mean THIS forum.....way back when....I don't know the history. When was it rolled out? Is there a history somewhere? ETA: yeah, I know the history is in the postings....but when did they start, and how would you do a search to end up at the very first week of posting?

From: Brenda Connolly I appreciate the sentiment Ray, but what the Hell else can we do? As a group , we've made our voices heard to anyone who would listen, and we've been lied to and ignored. Some people have gone above and beyond, Oryx, Nika, Qie and others and still we get "Fongool"* from the Lab. Let LL have their Blogororum. I hope they choke on it. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fongoolYeah that. I gave up.

From: Ceera Murakami When all is said and done, they are still trying to force through a change to a product that is flat out built using the wrong software. A Blog is not a forum, and never will be. It's like asking your vetrenarian to operate on your gallbladder. He may be great if your DOG needs that operation, but he simply is not qualified to do it on a Human.
Or more to the point, it's rather like finding out one morning that LL has replaced your car with a dog cart.
You: "WHAT THE...? Where's my CAR?"
LL: "Oh, we've replaced your vehicle with this shiny new one, don't you like it?"
You: "That isn't my car, it's a freakin' DOG CART! I need my CAR!"
LL: "But it's environmentally friendly! And we included a shiny new coat of paint, and a free kibble dispenser, and a shiny collar and leash for the dog. We even gave you the dog! Meet "Blondin". Shake, boy!" (Dog pees on you.)
You: "GAH! I don't need a kibble dispenser, and that blasted dog just peed on me! I WANT MY CAR BACK!"
LL: "Sorry, ths is what you get now. We don't provide cars any more. But you can go get your own car somewhere else."
You: "Fine! I'll do just that, and you can keep your dog cart and dog."
LL: "But... It's a shiny new vehicle! We'll make improvements to it, eventually, don't you like it?" (Dog pisses on LL and itself, and seems not to notice.)
You: "No, I don't. It may be a fine dog, with a little training. But that dog cart will never be a good car, no matter how many "improvements" you slap on it. Good bye!" You got a literal LOL from this poster... (If only it WEREN'T such a good analogy!)

Here's the first post I found, in 2002: /3/01/244/1.htmlI was not very scientific ... I went to "SL Forums" above and opened the Archive area. Then I looked for a category that looked likely to have really old threads. The archives are priceless. Life here is amazingly focused, cheery and positive compared to the bad old days that led to the closing of the General Discussion area. The early adopters were passionate people; passionate to a degree that early Linden moderators could not defuse. Instead of young energetic startup folks, they should have gotten a retired high school librarian to moderate.

*inserts sounds of crickets here*
If they could make the idiotic blog look and feel more like an actual forum, then I probably wouldn't have any problem with it. Right now, it's a pain in the butt to find anything.
Do I think the Lindens really give a fart about what we want or think? Nope.
So, my only request is, give me more warning before closing the forum.. I don't want my name associated with the death of a whole forum, rather than just a sub-forum. >.<

Resident answers was added when the general forum was closed (that I do remember). At that time several different forums were closed.

From: Set Serpentine i reckon everyone should just refuse to migrate to the new flogrum. seriously, go to sc, slapt, even slu. leave ll's failure to wither on the vine. Yeah, I understand the feeling, but you know, there are reasons people are here now, instead of (or in addition to) elsewhere. We all were able to find this place, for one thing. It's the most obvious place to start: the forums to which secondlife.com links. Maybe we can all "graduate" to a site that's harder to stumble on--a place you go to "on purpose"--but that's not great for the new folks who stumble on the Flogs when they replace these forums as the obvious place to start. And when we found this place, we found an intact, vibrant, and helpful community. It's not perfect, sure, but some of the smartest people in SL post here. And some of the most helpful. And funniest. And just plain fun. If we all scatter to the other sites, this community won't be around to welcome new residents. What I've seen of the Flogs in the guise of the Commerce Forums and Answers does not inspire confidence that they'll encounter anything like what we all found here. There are smart, helpful, funny, and fun people on the other forums, for sure. We'll all be fine elsewhere. I just don't think the same will be true for new residents looking for help and community, not if we all leave and never look back.

Does the flog allow for signatures? If so, what we need is to chose ONE non-LL forum and post it in the signatures over there. Once in a while, post on the flog to direct new residents to the chosen forum.

Once in a while, post on the flog to direct new residents to the chosen forum. They are pretty explicit about what is allowed in sigs. Safer to just put kiosks up in world and add a notecard to products sharing non LL communities if they are interested. Put it in your profiles, picks, etc. blog the alternative forums weekly into the feeds, etc. Over time the word will get out. If you really care. The general feeling I am observing is one of community disintegration and people hanging it up. The spirit of Second Life that made it great is gone according to many people.

Here's the first post I found so far: /8/90/7/1.html"Welcome to Projects " by Peter Linden - Join Date: Nov 2002 Is this the second set of forums? Was there a forum for alpha users? The thread at /8/bd/13/1.htmlstarts with " Other things to do - carried over from old forums This thread is being carried over from the old forums, all posts are attached here:"

You know, deep down inside of me, there is a hope that the Lindens in charge of this migration went to other Lindens or maybe moderators, like Strife, who know these forums intimately, and were asked what they thought about the migration project. I hope they were told "it will be an unmitigated disaster, and you will have to rebuild the community all over again". Of course, they would have been ignored, but I just love to think that someone is going to reap the oh-so-sweet vindication of being right and being able to give the people in charge of the flog the "I told you so" look everytime they meet up.

I did not read through all of this, but I certainly hope that if they are shutting these forums down, that they are archived. I have found much useful information from the day I started Sl in finding answers from searching these forums.
