PETA’s “Animal Record” report for 2008, filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, shows that the animal rights group killed 95 percent of the dogs and cats in its care last year. During all of 2008, PETA found adoptive homes for just seven pets.
Just seven animals -- out of the 2,216 it took in. PETA just broke its own record.
Again, I am not a fan of PETA, but this is case in point. Do you even realize the magnitude of the animal overpopulation issue? I will tell you this....if PETA, a nationwide organization, euthanized 2,209 animals in 2008.....that is a TINY number. When a humane society in a medium sized city near here had to euthanize 10,000 animals in one year...most of which were healthy and adoptable (if only there were homes) and guess what...those numbers are not extreme. Sort of makes 2200 animals nationwide seem like a small number (but then I don't believe PETA is really in the practice of running shelters and the numbers here reflect that....they took in 2216 animals nationwide? Our local animal shelter in the small city I live in took in 5 times that many animals in 2008.) I'm gonna climb off my soapbox because believe me, I could be up here railing away all day. All I can say is, if you care...spay/neuter.

On Monday, my dad brought me a kitten he found in the parking lot at work, that had been orphaned by Friday's tornadoes. At approximately six weeks old, she would not have survived much longer alone. She was also severely infested with fleas, well on her way to flea anemia. As soon as I was able to, I committed mass flea murder by applying Advantage to the kitten as well as my other three indoor cats (one of whom has FAD - flea allergy dermatitis - and as such must be kept flea free or he licks himself bald) I'm responsible for the deaths of at least a few hundred fleas due to saving that one kitten from a slow death. Oooh, I'm such an animal hater! Tornado Chii: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37950803@N02/3633326793/I think PETA had good intentions to start with, but now they're run by a bunch of crazies. Personally, I'm religious, and the Bible says animals must be treated humanely, it's ok to keep pets, and meat is a gift from god.

I'd heard something disturbing about PETA and went to look up an article about it. Here is the snopes discussion, giving more than one side to the story. http://msgboard.snopes.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=001466;p=1I was a vegetarian a long time, still eat meat as seldom as my metabolism will let me (details not important), and support no kill shelters. But PETA creeps me out quite frankly. I do not think their in your face method jibes with their professed cause. YMMV.

When I am bush-camping I snare rabbits and friends give me meat (Caribou and elk) that's been shot. These animals have led a good healthy free life. But it's natural we can eat them and respect them for feeding us. I don't have pets - westerners and europeans have some weird ideas about dogs and cats. They shouldn't be in people's houses. Unclean. That's just my take on it,

I used to think that too (raised in the country, where animals belong outside) but now in my old age I can't go outside much, and need the companionship of my pets, so I keep them inside. I do put flea preventative on them though, fleas give me the creeps.

I understand if you are restricted by age you need a dog with you but its when people get three or four dogs on a bed or a cat round their face. When I was a kid I had a husky so I was blessed that he hated being inside. He used to eat fish we caught for him (northern pike) and he had wolfy breath - kissing him was an experience you only did once and he didnt care for humans in his "space" anyway. Also I travel and so any pet would be in a kennel most of its life.

I'm actually restricted by health. Anywho, my crew are all cats, so they're pretty clean without much intervention from me, though the newest one got a couple of baths before being allowed to cuddle. And I don't like them on my face, though the little one likes to try.

i have an English Mastiff and a black lab that live inside my house.. they are only allowed on the tile and the runners in the halls..they won't touch the carpet unless i call them..they both end up sleeping by the back door..i guess it is cooler there or something..
