Why is it you see people in these noob skins ( im talking about the yellow ones the default ones you start with) and they think they look good, those skins look awful to me I dont see how anyone could be attracted to them. I really hope im not the only one who feels that way but if your going to play in sl at least try to make an effort, its not a money issue becuase you can get half decent skins as freebies, so why the noob look.

I'm not intending to bite your head off, but I don't think it's anyone else's business but their own.

Well, how do you know they think they look good?

I knew I looked awful, but didn't have anyone to teach me in the beginning anything about "skins". I had no idea how others got those nice skins in fact. It was all a learning process for me. Took me a couple of weeks before I realized that you had to actually put them on, either buy them, or get them free someplace. I kept trying to fiddle with the sliders to make myself better looking to no avail :(

Same goes for my hair.

And, you know what tho? I still had guys trying to pick me up. I wasn't Ruthed anymore. I managed to make myself look kind of cute, regardless and I can speak well. So, there you go.

Because they don't know....

If it bugs you so much, help them out, keep a folder of stuff you can give them, or drag them along to Sarah's Freebie Paradise.

I've done it to a few people, made some great friends.

Well Starling, my advice would be not to let the way anyone looks bother you *S*. After all, you will meet avies who are just a plywood box, and others who are warthogs or whatever.

Many people are not in SL to be attractive (or to have their avatar be attractive). Even more alts are not in SL to be attractive.

If, however, you think that a person might care how they look (e.g. they're shopping for clothes or something), then perhaps you should strike up a conversation and give them some of the skin freebies? I have a folder of 6 or so female skins that I have given folks on occasion. Let me know if you want it.

Why does it bother you? The more "ugly" avatars the better you will look in comparison :D

I'm a guy and one of my alts is a woman, and if I get a guy trying to pick me up I tell him so, and strangely they still continue to try and pick me up.

For me, it was getting used to SL, finding things out and playing with the slides. I knew the noob skin was crap. I just didn't care, because I was still playing with the sliders to see how much a difference they made. Now, I have two pretty avatars and a decent idea of what the sliders do ;)

ok I never said anything about the big slugs and things I see running around that is people's choice and yes I do try to help some, but then they say they like the look and yes a few have said that to me. Plus i never said that the people with the gorgeous skins is the way it should be either i just said that most ppl know about the skins you can get and dont even want to bother with them but then most of thoses ppl just camp all day.

Perhaps you are referring to a constant bombardment of personal advances. In that case I'm sure some would agree with your frustrations.

But if you are generalizing all together, then if it bothers you that much, keep a freebie folder and give it to them when you see them. After all, we looked just like them one day. In those days, I didn't know any better, and didn't even know what a "skin" was. There was one person that I will be always thankful for that gave me a helping hand.

As a mentor I often go to Orientation and Help Islands had many noobs speed hours getting that "perfect look" with the default av. I really feel sorry for them because most will dump all that work as soon as they see whats on the maigrid. The newbie often ask "Hey, why can't I make my av look like yours". I give them a newbie starter kit that includes some nice skins, hair and clothes.
Put I alway find it funny the newbies that try to flirt with the female mentors and they don'even know how to walk yet. I have to give credit to the female mentors that put up with it very well. Their response normally is: "This is just the training section. I'm sure you will find someone nice on the maingrid."

What bugs me a lot is people who open a topic with a subject that doesn't say anything, like "What bugs me a lot" ;)

Perhaps you think YOU look good? Just kidding.

Some people don't care about how their AV looks...to them it is just a vehicle. To some of us...it is a secondary personality.

I'm not sure about the part you said above that, '...they think they look good.' It doesn't really relate. I really don't see newborns walking around claiming 'they look good.' And on the flip side, to them, they just may think they look good...just as a non-gamer may think the original Halflife looks good. It does look good, but in comparison to what's out there, it's dated and uninspiring. Regardless, don't judge a book by its cover.

Was there a question here?

Most new people don't know....and some don't have enough L's to get the stuff they really want so they camp. Big deal....they are in it more for the personal connections..not to win an SL beauty contest. Good for them.

One of my dearest friends in SL stayed noobish for a long time because she was just having too much fun exploring and meeting people. Her 'looks' were an after thought. She did up her AV as best she could and was very choosy about any new skin/hair she got...and she sticks with the same look that she was happy with months ago. I helped her fine tune her shape and gave her some good freebie skin.....and she was happy with that. So...you know...to each his/her own. For many people, vanity is not at the forefront of their being.

Don't forget that a hghly detailed, high-end skin can set you back several thousand Lindens. Maybe they're spending their money on other things.

there is a definite segment (mostly men) who actually prefer to use an AV thats pretty close to the default one.

In fact One rather prominent forums poster referred to buying a non-default skin as Vain.

Of course, they can look like whatever they want, its a computer game.

But between you and me, they look bad.

Not to mention soooo 2003.

They're putting it in a bank to earn high interest so they can afford a new skin?

Like some others here, I also have a folder of items for new players. One for men and another for women. Skins, shapes, a good pair of shoes, new member hair vouchers from two different places and note card with instructions on wearing the shapes and skins plus links to several freebie places at the bottom.

Dekka, I have heard this or some thing similar several times. There are many people who are accepting of the player. You are the one who is cross gendered, so if it bothers you to have a man find you attractive, then don't be a woman.

Janice is a bi-sexual female. I don't go looking for relationships but they usually happen anyway. The person at the keyboard is a straight male.

I'm just not sure what the big deal is, to be honest. Avies are...um...CARTOON FIGURES to begin with, FFS. Who cares if someone likes their newbie skin and want to wear it for the rest of their natural SL life? I personally made a very pretty avie, I think, but I'm a woman and am vain enough and self-conscious enough to admit that I wanted to look good, but mostly for my RL husband who had already been on SL for a couple of months before I started playing. I couldn't care less what anyone else on SL thinks about my avie. I just think some people are here to: contribute something other than looks, explore, learn, have fun, and the way they look is secondary to them. It's just not something I waste my time worrying about....how other's look, I mean.

This bugs me alot... :(

SecondLife should be for more than horny 18-year-old boys hitting on digital female shapes. The whole 'romance' half of SL is a complete crock, and if you're looking for porn go surf the web instead of polluting my favorite creative space with it.
