Ask Greg, Peter and Bobby...

Peter turned out to be a hottie. I wish he was gay.

It seems that 2 million number tossed around of potential sign-ups was really unrealisitc
ESC seems to agree :).

From: someone
Electric Sheep founder Sibley Verbeck said new registrations at the Second Life Web site were up 40,000 today over normal new registration traffic of about 8,000 per day, not counting the number of people who signed up through the CBS portal. That's tiny compared with CSI: NY's viewer base, but within expectations. "We weren't expecting a lot more than that," Verbeck said. Getting involved in Second Life isn't just a matter of visiting a Web site -- you have to register, download software, install it, and get acclimated to navigation and communication. That takes time.
As far as I know the LL stats track all residents though, not just the ones that came through its own sign-up.

And the current daily sign-up seems to fluctuate between 16,000 and 24,000 so the quoted 8,000 is false as well.

(Missed the following tidbit :o)

From: someone
CSI creator, CBS's Anthony Zuiker, has said that he hopes virtual worlds tie-ins like this one will help bring back TV viewers who've abandoned television in favor of the Internet.
Looks like they were really more interested in luring SL'ers to the TV than the other way around.

That wasn't my perception. The promos during the show talked about CSI:NY in Second Life, used the Second Life logo, and invited people to visit cbs.com to get the dowloiad information. The Second Life identity was featured prominently enough, although the secondlife.com URL was not.

Uh yeah, but.. If you never heard of Second Life, what in the show would make you think that the show writers didn't make it up? It easy to make up logoss and it's even pretty easy to crap out a fake MMORPG using tools like Metaverse. And the ad was for a web game based on the show as far as anyone would know which a LOT of shows/channels have like Adult Swim and Nickelodian. It made it sound like something that the CSI franchise made up themselves.

If SL /itself/ had had an ad in there advertising "Hey yeah were are a real thing! Come check us out!" I bet the reponse would have been a lot better.

hmmm, now idly having nbc's 'the office' (also mentioning the existance of sl tonight), and finding it loaded with lame 'bee movie' promos. also the only mention of sl was in the way of 'losers play sl'. whoopee... now -there's- some positive spin huh?

You know, it's time to lighten up and not take ourselves so seriously. I really doubt some cracks on a mediocre TV show are going to do much to cause embarrasment to anyone here. As many peopel that watch these shows, most of them will not even remember the name Second Life, the next day, and you won't be walking around with some mark of shame on you telling the world you are one of "Them". Unless you bought First Bling, of course.

CBS evidently has big plans for the Star Trek environment.

Where did you get this information? is there a link?

ohhh, i hardly take that personally! actually really, i was quite impressed with the csi episode... my official review would be 'it's a hoot!' ;) i'm glad i taped it; it will bear a few more watches for novelty's sake. and actually, although the 'professional assassin' thing seems a little too pat an 'answer' to the mystery, i thought ('mistakes' and all) that it had a 'satisfactory amount of sl content' to please an sl-playing non-tv viewer like me. ;) (and i couldn't help but giggle madly when gary sinese had to chase the cute lil' blue fox!!;)

and funny i still haven't seen this vid shared around the forums!! i thought quite a funny 'short version' of the episode.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfXb6zb6Upc

curious to see how the incoming traffic works out - i suspect there will be at least a good 'trickle' effect from it, taking in broadcast and net repeats. :) i guess after that, the all-too-brief and all-too-'losery' the comments that 'the office' offered really felt a letdown. hehe i know i could watch more if csi did more sl!! :)

Yeah I need to take my own advice sometimes. I just get bemused by the whole "people are gonna think less of me because I play SL" panic that sometimes goes around.

DAMMIT!! I was gonna say that!!!! :p

But how dare you make fun of Ducks!!!

BTW- the whole CSI/SL thing may have a different effect. I was talking to a girl at work who thinks what she saw on TV is EXACTLY what goes on in SL- the whole virus notecard thing for one.

But then... she never was too bright (this being a waitress who was going to drive to Germany)

I love this. If you go to the CSI:NY website

http://alpha.cbs.com/primetime/csi_ny/#

and click on Videos you can watch the previous episodes on-line.

The video veiwer page that pops up has a button at the bottom right corner labled

"BOSS BUTTON".

If you click on it the window turns into what appears to be a blank email window,
hiding the video you are watching.

LOL

LOL! I'm not sure she even knows how to find it on the map!

She was talking to her BF on the phone, he travels. I heard her say "You're driving to Alaska for this job? Can you drive to Alaska?" So I point to a calendar map on the wall, the kind that has Alaska & Hawaii squished down by Mexico. She says "OH! Its by Mexico!! At least it'll be warm down there!!"

*Insert forehead slap here*

Did I mention I work with idiots?? :D

You should tell her that you can drive to SL too...just get in your car and hit the freeway. You'll know you're there when you encounter the caterpillar on a mushroom smoking a hookah.
