Since the other thread has been overwhelmed by another discussion, let's continue discussing CSI:NY here if anyone wants to:

From: Brenda Connolly
Doesn't CBS also have a stake in ESC? ESC is doing a Star Trek Sim, and Paramount is a CBS company so I guess there is an interest.
You're right, I see now that CBS put 7M$ into ESC last February, in a round shared by Gladwyne Partners (a very early investor). Gladwyne has also invested in Anshe Chung - interestingly, they brand themselves as a VC firm for the real estate industry!

CBS evidently has big plans for the Star Trek environment.

God knows how much private money the Sheep have.

So far it looks like the business sector with the most interest and success in virtual worlds is entertainment, which makes sense. Kaneva/Turner Broadcasting seem pretty tight as well.

I wonder what the Star Trek sim will be like. Sounds interesting.

I have not seen the most recent episode of CSI:NY, nor have I visited the Sim(s), so have to refrain from commenting on that matter.

I've had limited success wading through the other threads, but from what I saw, didn't find actual statistics. Is anything like that public, that we know of?

I was watching the CSINY sims on the map during the East Coast airing... weird load-balancing: they seemed to be tightly filling the first 3 banks of sims (each "bank" having 4 sims: 2 for Orientation and 2 for gameplay, presumably). But the higher numbered banks sat completely idle, with once in a while just an avatar or two into the fourth. (Dunno, maybe it was intentional to fill sims tightly, to avoid looking vacant.) Or maybe the loading sequence wasn't that obvious, and some higher-numbered banks were filling that I just didn't find by poking around.

But, if this guesswork is valid, it seem this ESCapade is sitting on 400-some idle sims.

With a new Star Trek movie coming out next Christmas I'd say they are aiming for another tie in.

I find it somehow odd that the evil guy in Heroes is going to be Spock :)

Like that guy in American Psycho who also played Jesus in a movie :)

I am not sure why, but that always seems "off" to me.

There is already a Star Trek museum...it's absolutely fabulous and extremely extensive. I don't see how anybody can outdo what this guy did on his build...

Not saying the two are in competition...but I certainly hope they link to the other guy's build...it's super impressive.

I thought Paramount owned Star Trek? Does it own CBS or vice versa? Anyone know?

With the introduction of the star trek brand "officially" to the grid... do you think that the creator of the Star Trek museum will be targeted for copyright/trademark issues?

If the corporate world is coming... they are going to bring their lawyers.

Not happy about Linden Labs purchase of XStreet (formerly SLX) and OnRez. Will this mean LL will ban resident run online shoping outlets in favor of their own?

Viacom owned CBS but was split, now CBS Corporation owns CBS (and CBS, The CW (co-owned with Time Warner), CSTV Networks, Showtime Networks).

Viacom also owned Paramount. Paramount went with the new Viacom in the split. Apparently CBS still retains the assets of Paramount (as in the film/video/tv library).

Yes, there was a news-story the other day about corporations coming to SL and the increasing potential of copyright infringement lawsuits. I did not read that article, though.

OK. Thanks. Then Viacom owns Paramount by itself.

I read something somewhere that Paramount was fine with it . However that can change now that an "Official" build is coming.

/me was confused so looked it up on wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBS_Corporation

Which says that Paramount Television is owned by CBS. Paramount Parks was sold off. CBS also owns Showtime, which has that show ... the L Word? that was/is in SL.

Paramount Pictures, the film company, is still owned by Viacom.

So that make ST the TV shows under CBS and the Movies, at least the new one, under Viacom.

It is a complicated thing (also complicated by the fact that the Paramount amusement parks did not go with Paramount Motion Pictures to the new Viacom corporation, but to the new CBS Corporation, though it has now been sold - the amusement parks, to another company). :) The huge Redstone empire is still owned by Redstone (the entities have just been split from each other into their own companies, with Redstone the majority shareholder in both). Sumner Redstone.

If you come across that article agan, I would love to read it. There is an awful lot of content that is in jeopardy with the stuffed suits coming to town.

Besides all the weirdness and mistakes and post editing mentioned elsewhere. One thing that really struck me was that it almost /wasn't/ an ad for SL. I mean if you didn't know SL existed, the show didn't really tell you that it did (for real). How would you know they didn't just make something up for the show. Even the ad for SL half way through the show really didn't advertise SL directly, it advertised an on-line game version of CSI:NY.

And that was half way though, not sure how many people were even supposed to know that they COULD or "should" sign up. Though SLs exposure onthe show was enourmouse, it's actual /advertisement/ was virtually non existant... Was odd.

Of ourse anyone curious will then find out about it later, but I wonder how many just assumed it was something fake and never bothered :D

I just went to what is apparently the top CSI message board, and fans of CSI:NY appeared to really like this episode. Only a handful of them even mentioned the SL aspect of it though, and I only saw 2 mentions of people who actually signed up, and one who was unable to download the client.

I never saw concurrency numbers exceed 39K last night, although they sunk below 37K by the time I logged out. I was actually pretty excited for ESC about this thing. I love anything that gives people positive reasons to sign up.

Yes, I have seen a lot of these "fake" entities created in television episodes and in movies, and I would have assumed SL was also fake.

Do the majority of Americans even have High Speed connections good enough to run Second Life yet?

Plenty of my family still uses dial up even.
