When I used the male version, it seemed like it sized down the lengths of the various components, but did not mess with muscle, fat, girth, etc.. just proportioned along the verticles. I looked horribly deformed as a result of putting that on.. more work needed to size down the other factors.

Wow, glad I didn't try that on. I just took my normal shape and tweaked it for proportional height. I looked through the kit, and left my avatar pretty much the same. _____________________

I tried the properly preportioned avatar and I think it was the face shape that was one of the main things that might put some people off. But that's a individual thing that a creator could not decipher for everyone.

I think the purpose of those shapes is just to illustrate the individual proportions.. head, neck, chest, torso, arm length, leg length. I wouldn't expect them to be finished masterpieces, but simply a crude template to work from. So if you wanted to use them, you'd still have a fair bit of work ahead to get it customized for you.

no, the meter is not arbitrary at all. it is a direct result of physics!
...It is all arbitrary after all, including the SL "meter" itself. For me, this is more than just the camera behavior. _____________________

That's still not clear. I only expect height to change the vertical dimension, so torso thickness and body fat don't seem relevant at all. But if that's what it's trying to say, then it should just say that height only adjusts vertical dimensions, without adjusting horizontal ones proportionately. The way it's worded suggests that something else is going on. Head size is relevant, but the wording I quoted doesn't suggest that the problem is that one of the dimensions is missing from the list. It says it changes things in smaller increments, with no indication of which of those, if any, are changed disproportionately. The goal in mind for that section is to explain what the sliders do exactly, the end guide will be more specific. The version posted is a rough draft, I wrote out general sections for myself to elaborate on later. So my question remains. If changing the height slider isn't the same as changing the individual vertical dimensions the same, then which ones are different? If I increase the height by 10%, say going from 50 to 55, how does that differ from increasing torso, leg, neck, and arm lengths, along with head size, by 10% each? If you move one slider point on the height slider, it isn't equal to moving the slider one point for the arm, leg, torso and neck lengths. While the results are close, each method moves them by different increments which can end up as a small, but noticeable difference if you were to move them by a larger number of points. So if you move the height slider by 10%, you may only have to move the other sliders by say 8% to get about the same results. Since I know somebody will actually go try this, it's only an example, the above percentages are not exact, so don't quote them. Quoting myself here: "Similar results can be achieved by using a shorter Height number, yet longer Arm, Leg, Torso and Neck lengths as can be achieved by using a greater Height number but shorter Arm, Leg, Torso and Neck." May I suggest that you just put together a list of proportions for men and women (and perhaps kids)? Something succinct, such as the head should be between 1/7 and 1/8 of the total height, the bottom of the knees three quarters of the way down, the waist 3/8 of the way down, and so on. The picture Briana posted as #4 contains this info, but it's not clear if it's for women only, and it's hard to convert "head line" into a proportion, without the diagram (for those of us who think in words and numbers). As stated, male and female specific areas are already in the works, but the head size rule applies to both genders. Again, the guide is not complete. The opening forum post here also leaves out the photo references taken in-world, which are spread throughout every part of the guide. I nearly gave up on this thread, because the first two posts in the thread just seemed to be about why proportions are important (something I thought obvious). I was just looking for what the proportions should be. How to measure and adjust them in SL is a different discussion - worthwhile (in other words, it's real good stuff that you have there), but separate. It was only halfway through the third post that actual proportions were discussed - way too late for my attention span. It's only the quantity of subsequent discussion that brought me back. It is not obvious to the majority of people, however, which is why things are explained. Some things are already in their own notecards, such as sections on scale. The version posted here is an out of date, single notecard rough draft. I tried the properly preportioned avatar and I think it was the face shape that was one of the main things that might put some people off. But that's a individual thing that a creator could not decipher for everyone. The shapes are only a general base to build upon, I even state that the faces need work. Since people will likely want to keep their face or create their own anyway, I did not see the point in personally spending the effort to create pretty faces (which can largely depend on the skin anyway) when that is not at all the focus. I do understand the desire for that though, and state that I eventually intend to include full, well proportioned avatars instead of basic shapes only. Exactly! Yay, somebody gets it! A lot of the questions and problems people bring up are exactly why I have *personally* not released the guide to the public. I will once again state this, as it needs to be said: This guide is a work in progress and has been improved a lot since I wrote the first version, which you see here. The version posted here is a vague, incomplete rough draft with everything bunched together. It was never intended for mainstream release as is. The included tools and shapes are also incomplete. What you see is my outlines for sections which will be (and currently are being) further elaborated on and many even put in their own guides that will be included with the final (and free) product. While I do appreciate word being spread around and feedback on it, people need to understand the paragraph above. While I do appreciate word being spread around and feedback on it, people need to understand the paragraph above. It's like somebody complaining their car doesn't go fast when the wheels have yet to be added. I'll make a couple suggestions then: 1. Include more than one shape. Instead of calling them "properly proportioned" call them 1:7 and 1:8 ratio so people have a better idea what they're getting. 2. Tell people you're giving the kit to not to distribute it, or spam it to every avatar they think is too tall until it's actually finished. _____________________

When we were kids and my brothers and I would wrinkle our noses at spam with breakfast my father used to tell us the story of how our Aunt Fanny would bake a large spam with cloves at Eastertime during WWII.

The following is an ad for (FEMALE) models:
SIZE PREFERENCES FOR GRACIE MODEL: Go into edit appearance and click body follow the measures down.. I will highlight and give a range for the important ones: Height: At least 75 but preferrable is 80-85 or so. Body thickness: less than 7 Body fat 0 preferred but no more than 7 Torso Muscles should be less than 40 Shoulders should be proportionate but usually less than 50. Breast size: LESS THAN 40 PLEASE (mine are around 33) Arms length... you are taller so your arms should be longer... probably between 60 and 69 and finger tips reach just around or above your mid thigh. Mine are at 67 torso length... we dont need long torsos so less than 55 but not too short so shorter than 44 Love handles.... between 15 and 20 not too muscular please ... less than 47 but we need some tone so more than 40 leg length.. LONG!! somewhere between 80 and 95 is usually good... mine are 89. HIP WIDTH: NO more than 48!!!!!!!!!!! ( remember i use a lot of system skirts) Hip length shouldnt be very long.. keep it less than 37 please. Butt size less than 30 (ALOT OF SYSTEM SKIRTS SO SMALL IS GOOD) Saddle bags less than 25 foot size 0 so that all shoes will work. This isn't the kind of body I prefer but some do. |
