Didn't you used to have a dog?

Yes but he had congestive heart failure in December. :(

I do have a new 10 week old kitten. My daughter wanted a new puppy, but I can't care for or train a dog any longer. So we compromised on a kitten. :)

You too? We can apply together. I am sure you can convince her into making male clothing!

I am going to be nasty here... usually I mean that if I don't have anything good to say about ppl, I should shut up. But, here's one of the model shapes she sell: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25473057@N07/3191257527/sizes/m/

I haven't been following this thread but I thought I'd have a look. That's one awful shape. Apart from the shape, is it possible to get the ears that low?

The silly thing is that some people actaully have such awful shapes in SL, and they think they look fine.

Same goes in RL.

I feel like a hypocrite here.

Because I don’t like the “you must look like RL” movement too much. I am all for that people can make overly pin-up shapes, tall thin model shapes, tiny shapes, and plus-sized shapes. There must be room for the very thin too. On the other side, I think the result looks better when the eye is fooled to think that what they see can be real. Like stretching the legs a bit longer than possible and making a slender frame.

I don’t like that size zero bodyfat is so preferred in an ad, but hey, she wants to hire models, she can pick the one she think represent her and her products best. I think the shape specifications are taking the “slim, long-legged” model ideal too far. On the other side, what is /too far/?

This is difficult, because I want to defend that I'm 6 feet tall in SL. Then I should defend everybody's right to make their avatars as they prefer them?

I wanted to kick the thread back to discussing how we want to portray ourselves in SL, instead of starting a new thread. Because this shows how difficult it is to discuss what’s beautiful. And in a world where we can ignore proportions, should we still use them? And why should we use proportions based on RL?

The following is an ad for (FEMALE) models:

SIZE PREFERENCES FOR GRACIE MODEL:

Go into edit appearance and click body
follow the measures down.. I will highlight and give a range for the important ones:

Height: At least 75 but preferrable is 80-85 or so.

Body thickness: less than 7
Body fat 0 preferred but no more than 7
Torso Muscles should be less than 40
Shoulders should be proportionate but usually less than 50.
Breast size: LESS THAN 40 PLEASE (mine are around 33)
Arms length... you are taller so your arms should be longer... probably between 60 and 69 and finger tips reach just around or above your mid thigh. Mine are at 67
torso length... we dont need long torsos so less than 55 but not too short so shorter than 44
Love handles.... between 15 and 20
not too muscular please ... less than 47 but we need some tone so more than 40
leg length.. LONG!! somewhere between 80 and 95 is usually good... mine are 89.
HIP WIDTH: NO more than 48!!!!!!!!!!! ( remember i use a lot of system skirts)
Hip length shouldnt be very long.. keep it less than 37 please.
Butt size less than 30 (ALOT OF SYSTEM SKIRTS SO SMALL IS GOOD)
Saddle bags less than 25
foot size 0 so that all shoes will work.

This isn't the kind of body I prefer but some do.

How about you IM me the name of where this comes from so i can send them my opinion on the mutant shape they are intentionally propagating.

Sure Briana. But she's got a lot of bashing in other forums, and I think more will do no good. In some peoples vision - this looks good. Can we change the way others think?

It is rather common in RL to ask for a certain body type for a Haute Couture runway show. With a bit less dramatic leg length, this could pass as a runway model.

@Briana Dawson :

Thank you so very much for this wonderful guide!!!!

I'm about six weeks old in SL now, and for the first two weeks of my virtual life, I looked like someone microwaved a plastic doll and then left it sitting in a hot car. No, first I looked like a wool doll someone washed and then dried - huge headed, tiny armed and with a waist like spaghetti. THEN I looked like the stretched melted plastic doll :)

Now, well, now I look like an established inworld designer wanted me to look. I ended up abandoning my idea of learning to texture and making my own skin and bought one that is beautiful (to me, that is!!!) and use the shape that came along with it.

I'm not happy with the shape any more, by the way...it's too tall or at least the legs are way too long for my tastes. But that's ok, right? I'm the one who wears it and has to look at it, and really, should that matter to anyone else in the metaverse? I don't think so...but I'm new here, so perhaps I just don't get the whole controversy yet :)

I have been around long enough, however, to know a great guide when I see it! Thanks to yours, I am now heading back to "The Lab," grabbing a white smock and maybe even some crazy mad scientist Einstein hair. It's time to try making my own shape again!!!

For those of you interested on some comparison numbers:

Wikipedia human height averages table per country.
Wikipedia Link

All the rest of us above of these numbers are mutants and those shorter are cute :D

WOW! At 5'6" / 169cm - I am rather tall for a female compared to the rest of the world.

Which explains why i always feel so tall around women in RL. (I am 5'6" in RL and SL).

Lets AR the other one for ageplay.

At 5'2", I finally had someone tell me "no child AVs allowed here," last night. Talked around it - but still... with my curves, I don't look anything like a child in SL.

Wow, according to that Wikipedia page, I'm TALLER than the average woman from my 'country of origin:'

Peru:
Women: 151 cm (4' 11.5";)
Men: 164 cm (5' 4.6";)

Didn't know that.

wonderful tips Briana, will swing by and pick one up. if i can get a LM please :)

aaand since we do have a few of the established animators in this thread(and if you have addressed this issue already, my apologies), but how about making animations for those of us who chose to go the shorter route? i would model if it would help, and buy them as well.

as to the short vs tall debate, let it rest. there are those of us who are comfy with who we are rl and will reflect that in their avas. be it animal, veggie, or alien. i choose to go shorter because i had no guide to go by, and was kinda shocked to find out i was at almost 9 ft with my first ava.

Heh here's a pic of us, 2 adults who enjoy themselves greatly.
She found a prim based height tool and it works fine, tested it with a plain old prim stretched against me so its quite accurate, prim-wise:
(Left): 1.45 Mts. 4`9"
(Right): 2.30 Mts. 7`6"

Aaaaand we are both adults and we do not do age play, just male female interation made more fun with a certain height differences ;)

Oh speaking of which, I have searched some and looked around on the SL website and the doubt just still follows me...
I have read the Terms of Service (ToS) http://secondlife.com/corporate/tos.php
I have read the Community Standards http://secondlife.com/corporate/cs.php

And either I'm a terrible reader or I'm blind but nowhere on both documents says that adults are at least specific height or certain looks to define overly young avatars (aka child) and people starting to call names and the like.

I have read some places in SL that claim the ToS and CS specify this and having a short friend makes me curious too.

As far I'm concerned we are right on our behavior.

By real world standards I am way too tall, but as an excuse I offer this;

When I first came to sl I was given a short tutorial on making myself, great so off I went and made "ME", by the time I discovered height meters everyone knew "ME" as me, to change now would make "ME" not me, at least in my eyes. (Yes I am emotionally attached to "ME";)

Just like the skin I wear, its extremely old, but to change my skin would stop me being "ME", errr or is that "ME" being me?

Totally Confused? I know I am...
