From: Argent Stonecutter And for avatars that need a relatively flat appearance to look right, there is no workaround. We just have to put up with looking like we're wearing skin paint instead of fur. Some are getting around that and making some decent skins for thier avatars. Psicorp has a real nice dragon avatar, and i think instict has a good start (not a fan of the look ) for their wolf. There are also some that offer undergarment layers that add a furlike appearance (doesn't help much on the prim components) But yeah, most fur covered avatars wind up having to look a tad cartoonish... but some are working around it as time goes on and they find tricks that work.

Huh... in RL I'm about 8-8.5 heads tall. Of course, I sorta held a ruler up to my nose and approximated. Thank god nobody caught me measuring my head!
Co-worker: "What are you doing?"
Me: "Uh... measuring my head..."
Co-worker: "Why...?"

From: Lindal Kidd Go ahead...be fluffy. You know you wanna... Exactly what I mean. If that bunny was illuminated with Windlight it'd look like it was made of cheap vinyl. Back when I started you could really look like you were fluffy, and it wasn't TOO bad before Windlight, but now... there's just no way.

I'm not sure I'm seeing what you are describing. Got any pix?

From: Lindal Kidd Really? I have some furry clothes that I think look great. I'm not sure I'm seeing what you are describing. Got any pix? Look at any of the pics on my Snapzilla profile. Look at my fur. Even on the Tokushi wilde honde it looks like it's painted on skin. Or are you talking about alpha prim fur? That stuff looks like crap. It's OK for the ruff on a jacket, but if you put it all over the avatar you get a monster. SL needs "materials", for both prims and avatars, or to roll back Windlight.

I do not want four arms and four legs. (at the risk of offending, I note the above is me being joky) My alt went out of his way to look, different.

From: Lindal Kidd Yes, I meant alpha prim fur. It's OK, I'll wear you around my neck like an annoyingly animated, opinionated little fur stole. You can get that at Extrovirtual. BTW, alpha prim fur didn't look as bad before Windlight made the alpha layering problem about a bazillion times worse. ReMzy Andrews' werewolf wasn't my style, but it used to look kind of OK.

Has/d (I'll stop that now, I'm not sure if it still exists) two heads. The head of one can be opened and closed, it bit down on the tail of the other stole to close. My mother was telling me about it the other day. Creeped her out. Kept expecting the little guys to look up at her and do something or other. Talk, attack, purr. I do not know.

After spending a little time with this, you know, I kind of like this for a couple reasons already stated. 1.I've had problems with buying giant furniture in the past and had to pull the animations and scripts out for use in my own smaller build 2.and I think that 'some' standardization wouldn't be a bad thing. Making shoes a standard size '0' certainly helped the shoe industry in SL even though I personally celebrate unique avatars of all kinds.

Proportions - all out of proportion?
05-18-2009 15:07
I liked the post on proportions, as far as being a good guide for newbies to use to avoid the pitfalls of tiny head and short arm syndrome. I hope that that is what you meant, as far as "using" it goes. Your qualifications are good, but you are not the only artist on the grid to have studied human proportions, and I highly doubt that the rest of us would like to be dictated to by someone who believes that her aesthetic views are superior to our own.
I studied life drawing and fashion illustration at Fashion Institute of Technology. I use the proportions from Fashion more often in SL, as this is a FANTASY, where anyone can look like the models I draw.
Anyone who happens to be tall and thin in RL won't stand a chance of being represented by your template. They're not "real enough."
BTW - this is me being tactful :)

lolwut??? Who cares what the 'rest of you would like'. I know i do not care. No one is dictating ANYTHING to you. You and the other artist you represent can go jump off a bridge for all i care. The guide maker is without a doubt not the only artist on the grid to study human proportions. But so far she is the only one to get off her ass and do something about it so the rest of us can benefit from what she knows and has learned in her professional career. Whether or not other 'artist' feel someone is dictating their 'superior' aesthetic views to you is something i really could care less about. Anyone feeling like they are being '"dictated to by someone who believes that her aesthetic views are superior" their own, quite simply has some personal confidence issues that should be kept to themselves instead of posted on the forum. OMG AN ARTIST THINKS SHE HAS AESTHETIC SENSES SUPERIOR TO MY OWN ARTISTIC SENSES - OH NOES!!!!!!!!! Get over it. I am tired of these STUPID posts that don't say anything but something personal like: 1. My proportions in RL are not like this, so now what? WA WA YOU INSULT ME. 2. I'm an artist too and i studied fashion and the human form and i have an opinion and you better not be saying your opinion is superior to mine because I am an artist too! Did i say i was an artist too?! WA WA WA! Bleh. Go cry about it elsewhere. So sick of these people assuming they are being dictated to and told HOW they MUST look when the word GUIDE is taught in freaking 2nd grade elementary school. Yes we know people in RL come in all shapes and sizes - Most of us learned this on Sesame Street. Yes we know you think that if everyone uses "proper proportions" then everyone will be the same. (Which is why its so easy for the majority of people to buy clothes at the same store in RL, right??). NEXT!

BTW - this is me being tactful - Claudine Ducrot As it has been stated time and time again, it is a guide, nothing more. It is intended to be an educational reference point for people that are interested, I am not dictating anyone, don't take it so personally. I listed my qualifications not to sound like I am superior, but to let people know where I am coming from. I had an older version of the guide floating around in-world for a while and received a lot of unnecessarily hostile (sometimes very) feedback from people wondering why my viewpoint was even worth considering. So, I find it best to answer such questions before they are asked. From: Lindal Kidd Vaelissa,
You have Private Messages turned off, so I'll ask you here...
May I have your permission to use your proportion kit in a class for newbies on Building an Avatar? You'll get credit.
Or, would you be interested in TEACHING such a class yourself? If so, IM kelley Griffith at GQ Start or Carl Metropolitan at NCI. I had actually considered this a long while back, but left the NCI scene completely some time ago. It is not out of the question once I get some things sorted though. For the time being, feel free to use anything however you like. Just keep in mind that it is currently far from a completed package.

From: Claudine Ducrot ...I highly doubt that the rest of us would like to be dictated to by someone who believes that her aesthetic views are superior to our own. Go and read any decent artists anatomy book - Hogarth, Bridgman, etc... they all say the same stuff that's in the OP. It's hardly one person's opinion, here. From: someone ...this is a FANTASY, where anyone can look like the models I draw. Reading this reminds me of the noob at drawing who refuses to learn anatomy and proportion because their scribbles are FANTASY and therefore apparently have no link at all to reality. The fact of the matter is they're just too lazy to bother learning to do it right. That has nothing to do with you personally, I just can't help but think of it when you emphasise the word.

I appreciate Vaelissa's guide as a basic resource, but it doesn't change the fact that I don't care if my avatar is realistic. She isn't. She's 6'10" and, at the very least, her legs are too long, and her waist and head are a bit too small. And, to me, she's perfect.

You are perfect Anne because... you are still in proportion! And you're wearing a corset so of course your waist is small.

And skins have an effect too!
05-18-2009 23:17
Since I started playing around with modding skins, I've noticed how much the shading and details affect the "perceptual" size of things. Breasts can look huge or small simply based on how much shadow there is underneath and in the cleavage. Try looking at your avatar from the side sometime.
