Bad news of the day: They're thinking of merging the Teen Grid into the main one

What I'm more concerned with is how far they're gonna Disney-fy the main grid for these teens to be on the main grid. Neopets was once meant for adults (err college aged adults, but still adults.) It's now so fluffy PG it makes my brain bleed. I come to SL because I can be an ADULT. I can make my choices about going to those mature places with XXX in their name, if that is my desire. *rubs forehead*

But I'm all for the idea of policed "safe zones" for the rugrats, if it means that I don't have to give up my nudity!

I just wish I could be more optimistic about the idea, but this is LL we're talking about. They never did anything half-assed when whole-assed would do. Especially when it comes to new policies or opening flood-gates.

And you know once SL becomes "Family Friendly" we will be deluged with all the companies who will want to market their mass market consumables to those families, making SL a dull , lifeless, whitebread and mayonnaise wasteland.

If anything can drive me to OpenSim, this would be it.

I will not "age verify" with any data-mining corporation.

If it comes down to age-verifying or leaving, I will leave.

Can I have your stuff?

No.

The gteam will check the server logs when they get an AR about something involving text. They won't just take peoples word on what was said. I've asked them this question a couple times and made sure I was very, very clear - they give the same answer every time.

AR: "GTeam...Konu said something naughty to me on voice...."
AR: "GTeam...Konu flashed me his naughty bits..."

There...check those logs. *glare glare glare glare glare*

Having read the transcript of the interview, after listening to it.....

I'm very concerned about this.

To quote from the transcript:

From: Philip Rosedale
ages can use Second Life together, and that’s the direction that we’re taking in our planning and our work. I think that the educational opportunities for Second Life are so great for all ages that we need to make it as available as we possibly can to people. If you look at what we’ve done with the Teen Grid, I think we’ve done a good job, as a small company, of being inclusive and creating an environment in which teenagers were able to use Second Life, I think, perhaps earlier than, I don’t know, we might have been able to. We pushed hard to get that working.
But, if you look at the problems with having a teenaged area, which is itself so isolated from the rest of the World, they’re substantial. There’s an inability for educators to easily interact with people in there because we’ve made it an exclusively teen only area. Parents can’t join their kids in Second Life so problems like that are ones that we think are pretty fundamental and need to be fixed. We need to stop creating isolated areas that are age specific and, instead, look at how we can make the overall experience appropriately safe and controlled for everybody. So that’s the general direction that we’re taking there.

Safe and controlled for everybody? As it stands now, our legal protection is that the main grid is for 18 year olds only, period. Those who are under than 18 who come to the main grid have committed deliberate fraud. Those communications we may have with minors are not our fault, they're theirs. That's becoming less and less of a legal leg to stand on these days, but that's all we can really count on.

If the main grid is opened up for all ages, then before we talk to anybody at all we will not have any choice but to ask point blank: ARE YOU 18 OR OLDER????? Even if we're not planning any adult conversation, just merely to talk to somebody we'd better know how old they are. Should any complaints arise and g-team has to look at logs, how far back are they going to go? Say I talk to somebody today that says they're 18, and in a month they complain about my behavior, perhaps I let slip some innuendo they were offended by, hey, I was sharing that with an 18 year old, supposedly. Will g-team look back far enough to know this person said they're 18? If not, my ass is toast, not only in SL, but in RL too.

Very very very very bad idea.

Solution is simple: don't talk to anyone. Ever.

Or better yet, stick with voice! Isn't that something else LL pushes down our throats? Oops, inappropriate metaphor.

ZOMG! Argent has gone lolcatz! Now I really *am* scared.

I'm pretty sure were not going to have teens wandering freely around M regions, and I think the fact that they've done nothing for, what? a year? to fix the obvious, public, epic failure of the age verification system means that it's not going to be part of this "merger" thing, whatever it turns out to be.

When this came up in the past, it was always much as Nika describes: some very controlled subset of the grid to be accessible by teens and only certain vetted adults. I'd guess that the reason it hasn't happened already is that they're still wrestling with exactly how to control what content passes across that boundary.

I'm not sure that will get teens as much benefit as the grid should offer them. But I'm not sure how they could do better without unreasonably endangering the adults.

Who cares about the adults? Think of the children! (tm) :)

Perhaps there could be a new continent on the main grid that is entirely PG, and teens could be confined to there, while adults could visit them too but with strict guidelines on appropriate behaviour. Teens could have green lettering on their name tags instead of yellow - an unobtrusive way of showing clearly who's what.

There are quite a few ways it could be made to work without bringing the house down.

Now answer me truthfully. Do you really believe it will be done in such a manner?

Based upon their track record, LL will handle this in the most insensetive, ham fisted, and byzantine manner imagineable.

It seems clear to me that LL's solution is Disneyfication. Eliminate the adult content, and your problem is solved.

Goodbye, escorts. Goodbye, strip clubs and dancers. Goodbye, dungeons. Goodbye, Gor. Farewell Xcite and SexGen and all their competitors. Take off your Amythyst collars.

Goodbye alternative lifestylers. Goodbye, nudist beaches.

Hello, skins with mandatory underwear.

You know...I'm not all THAT much into pixel sex and pr0n, despite the class I teach. But this whole area is what makes SL what it is. It lends spice and flavor to the world. Take it away, and this place will be unbearably bland.

LL never does anything half-arsed. Not when whole-arsed will do.

I would LOVE to agree with you, but, my own suspension based on a completely false AR convinces me to think otherwise. (T_T)
