Bad news of the day: They're thinking of merging the Teen Grid into the main one

Adult behaviour in SL is detrimental to LL's desire to attract corporate involvement and education. The sensational ageplay news stories are a huge nail in that coffin. If you really think that LL wants to preserve your second lifestyle over attracting large corporate players, you're fooling yourself. I could well see this, along with the acquisition of xstreetsl (and the subsequent removal of the mature categorization) as steps along that roadmap.

The community such as it is was necessary to bootstrap the virtual world, but is now a detriment.

But I have doubts that LL can actually pull this off even if it is their plan. So I'm not worried. ;)

I do want to see parents that rely on the net to babysit without any supervision to be prosecuted, means a few get burned so more learn to actually be parents... plus they are stealing services! I charge 20$ us /hr to babysit, so if I'm having to babysit their kids online...they are stealing my services without paying!

But seriously, if you parent then it's not a problem.

As I said before: Letting the internet baby sit you kids is like asking the drooling bipolar schizophrenic with multiple personality disorder in a raincoat and carrying a chainsaw to babysit them.

I think childish or immature behavior is more of an issue. I wouldn't describe flying penis particles (for one infamous example) as "adult behavior".

I'm the parent of a pre-teen (who's itching to get on the teen grid), and my issues with this idea are with the weight it will put on ME.

I know that most people who don't have children have no tolerance or respect for them. That's not something LL can change or legislate -- it's going to be my problem.

I know that semi-literate n00bs are going to run around with their shlongs sticking out of their pants, or stuck to their heads, and that griefers will fill landscapes with male and female genitalia. That's not going to change, no matter how much it's AR'd. So I'm going to have teach my daughter how to deal with all that sort of stuff. What fun. Think of all the wonderful discussions I'll have with my husband, who already dislikes SL.

And I know that whatever I'm doing, I'll have to be ready for the IM, "Mom, will you tp me?" and I will have to answer, "Okay, come on over." I know that I'll be her last resort when she's bored, her guide when she can't find places that aren't boring, and her companion when we search for kids to play with.

I know that it'll be fun, too, but some of the fun I'm having now is going to go away. Now, I can say, "Just give me five more minutes on the computer and then we can play," but then her little avatar will be standing next to mine, saying, "Mom, what can we do that's not boring? Why are we here? This is BORING."

All of you people who are bitching about how you're not going to change, don't worry. Nobody's going to make you change. You'll just have something new to complain about, and that's going to be my problem, too.

If you can say "5 minutes more on the computer, honey" now, in Real Life, you can say "I'll be with you in 5 minutes, honey" in Second Life. Yesno?

You mean teens aren't allowed on the main grid? I thought they always were. How do you explain Ahern?

If you are willing to be that in tune with your teen when she is on then more power to you. the problem will be with parents who don't care. There are plenty of those out there. Thank Heavens my children are not old enough to even be on teen sl.. both are under 10.
i can honestly say good luck with the *mom tp please*

If this does happen whats to stop someone from passing someone under 18 x-rated items that aren't named as such?

Way to risky of a move IMHO

If they want safe areas, then put the merged areas on the teen grid.

Agree. Take teh problem to a managed area liek teen grid. parents can monitor thier teens there in a safer environment. Educators can go there. I dont wanna feel like I am in an school zone when I am in sl. University is fine but NOT school education levels. They have to be monitored to cross teh road in reality - so how can we manage them in sl?

Combining the grids, or at least introducing areas where teen and adult users can coexist, will be a boon for education in Second Life. As things stand there is a major problem with using SL for education: what do you do when some of your students are over 18 and some are under (a common situation with both high school seniors and college freshmen)? You can't have your class meet on either grid without excluding part of your potential student body.

Other potential advantages: parents and their teenage children will be able to stay in touch with each other in SL. Parents will be able to provide spending money to teens from their L$ assets rather than having to put US$ into the system to buy L$ for them, saving time and transaction costs.

I don't think we want to just let teens into the adult grid without any controls. But we can have mixed-age areas with suitable monitoring; a good start might be areas owned by educational institutions, which would be closed to teens when no representatives of the institution are present. And we can have limited teen-adult messaging, perhaps by allowing cross-grid messaging only to friends with parents having control over which adult users their teens are allowed to friend. Basically, a teen could not add adult friends other than approved educators (like the adults who have permission to enter the teen grid now, and have to have background checks to get that permission) or Lindens, but a parent could add friends for him or her.
I agree with this, and if LL does everything it needs to along these lines, this doesn't have to be a bad thing for the rest of the grid. I'm still not sure this is *enough* of a merger; there's an enormous amount of good educational content on the Main Grid from which teens would still be excluded if kept to their own enclave, and it would be a significant barrier for adults to get good content to the teens (and vice versa, for the teen creators), but it seems about the only way to keep this from being a huge mistake.

As we know from so many policies that LL has implemented and refined and re-refined, the devil is in the details. In this case, they simply must not get it even a little bit wrong. Better that they should make the first step very, very cautiously.

One caveat, though, about education on the Grid: Yeah, it's a Good Thing and all, but it's not particularly profitable for LL, nor for resident businesses. I remember the outcry about restoring only most of the incredibly generous discounts that LL once gave educationals and non-profits. There's a sense of entitlement there that would make me want to shed as many of those customers as possible; they're gonna be trouble.

Perhaps this will make an opening for a new grid in competition with SL that has no children and no child avatars?

Frankly I'm fed-up, sick, sore and sorry with all of the problems connected to both issues in SL.
