No. I've survived much, much worse from SL. Y'all shoulda been here in 2004 when we went down for DAYS after an update. Pfft. Sissies. You don't even need to go back that far to find truly crashtastic viewers! When I first joined on with this avatar, it was with viewer 1.19.1.4 (the first Windlight viewer). It was nice. It was fast. It crashed on me several times in a single session! During a single two-hour event that I'm dancing, I could expect to crash to desktop 3-5 times. Viewer 1.20 was a showstopper for me, as it would randomly spike CPU usage to such a degree that it would kill my wireless connection. When 1.20.16 became a mandatory update, I thought I was hosed! By spectacular luck, nVidia made their 173 drivers for Linux available that same day. Strangely, that fixed the problem I had with the 1.20 viewers strangling my wireless connection to death. Go figure; but sometimes Linux can be a strange creature. Viewers 1.21 and 1.22 were the most stable viewers I had ever run. I could go whole sessions without crashing. Instead of measuring my mean time between crashes in terms of fractions of an hour, I could now measure it in weeks. Viewer 1.23 has brought back the crashtastic, but it is still nowhere near as bad as 1.19 was. I can still go days between crashes, if I manage my cache properly. If I could have the speed of 1.19.1.4 with the stability of 1.22, it would be a perfect world for me! ![]() _____________________

I've never had a problem running SL on 5700, 6500, 7600, 7800, 8800, 9600 or 9800 cards.\ with XP except some of the ancient viewers or when I was trying to run it on diallup, it got pretty funky and crashed a lot.
I'm looking hard at BM, it is a stable powerful platform, not much to see yet that isn't on the preview videos really, but need to see what they pull out of the hat between now and XMAS as to how much potential it has, it would be another 6 months then till it became any sort of competition. To me theis is the longst silence without upgrades we've had, and it's all around this Megaviewer 2.0 thing which better have some seriously cool features worth the suspense & wait, I'm expecting big scale stuff like a mesh upgrade or megasims, puppeteering or inbuit AO to prove LL are prepared to rise to the challenge any competion will soon present. It better not just be a GUI upgrade................ _____________________

WindLight works fine on my computer and performance of SL is fine, although not as good as it was a few months ago because objects and avatars take longer to rez now.

I'm pretty much stuck with SL because Blue Mars is based (to its very core) on DirectX, which means it'll never run on Linux nor Mac (nor next-gen iPhone/Touch/Tablet nor Android nor anything that didn't emerge from Redmond). That's still a big enough market for them (for now anyway), but I'm just not in that market: my "Microsoft Inside" machines are dust-covered heaps, and I very much doubt Windows 7 is gonna make me run out and buy some new hardware, nor trash-up my real machine with some dual-boot kruft.
If I were in Jumpy's position, I think it would be easier to just throw the Windows box over the rail, get a cheap OEM no-OS box from newegg with a decent graphics card, load up Ubuntu, and be happy. Pretty much everything we do now is on the Cloud anyway, so with hardware so incredibly cheap these days, the point of paying an extra 20% for an OS is lost on me. All that said, I do agree that LL needs to be paying more attention to quality of experience on low-end machines. There are just far too many glitches on all but the higher-end graphics cards, and that matters because SL currently has the advantage of supporting a (much) broader base of platforms. With netbooks and integrated graphics laptops growing in market share, and with much faster and more graphics-capable mobile devices coming out all the time, SL can make anything else irrelevant--but it has to work. _____________________

it's going to be a lot less freewheeling and tolerant than SL. I wonder just exactly what kinds of content and behaviours they are going to allow? And which direction is SL headed? |

I agree what what was said before better the devilyou know. And if those who are thinking of leaving leave and take their alts with them then less strain on the servers.
I also agree with a past comment SL is better now than in the past I for one am staying _____________________

I'm really considering it because 1. sl aint the only viable virtual world anymore 2. windlight, windlight, windlight (on low sl looks crappy now, and with fps tanking for no apparent reason on RECOMMENDED settings for many, many people who PAY for what ammounts to crap performance-its all over the jira), I've really considered striking out for better run pastures. have you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- jumpy your spoiled. I've been running SL on ultra low 64 draw/no anything but bump turned on, no lights no ground no flexi no plants trees and now i found I can run even better if I disable water, plants, clouds, and sometimes alpha, (although scary things happen when alphas off) All this and a avg FPS of 2.0 SO if your running as you say you are I'll swap you in a second. I've been like that for years with 2-3 computers and its all the same. its my isp that sucks. Will be untill I move. which is hopefully soon if everyhing works out. So suck it up. If I can do it and enjoy life on low low then you can surely do it on what your getting now. maybe im content because I have never seen SL on high other than photgraphs in flicker. When Im on the road my lappy isnt as good as my desktop, so Im still stuck. and Im not buying a new lappy just for sl when my current one works super. Yes SL is pricing / working its way right out of the market if it continues to ever need the latest and greatest. But - many of you dont agree either on that. so there we stand. I have noticed though today TELEPORTs are working awesome! I mean, zing zang your done. Yesterday it was ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiingggggggggggggggggg wait some more ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing nope, tp failed, do over. |

Yeah, I think Jumpy should cowboy up too. I run SL on a 6 year old Dell, with a non windlight viewer, on an ATI x300. I keep draw to 96 usually, all the shaders and stuff off, particles low , but all details maxxed and I am doing fine with it.

Hey Jump! Fwiw, I don't use 1.23 at all, it's craptastic in a few ways. I use either 1.22 when I need stability or, if I need features or need to run on an old lappie, Emerald.
It's quite possible that something's wrong with your setup. Crank up an alt who has permission to speak standard english and start a thread asking for ideas. Besides, weren't you the guy pimping for the "support LL" group just a week or so ago? C'mon, we know you're wedded to the place! You'd miss us all, not to speak of your Slut gig, terribly! |

I have seen absolutely no indication that the new viewer would be anything but a GUI upgrade. Where are you seeing that other stuff? AFAIK the guts of the 2009 or 2.0 viewer are spread around the different snow globe versions. There are some texure send/sort changes and I am sure others we can't see. Your right though, 2.0 will just be a big UI change. @ Jumpy. There are ways to check if your lag is client or server side. Get familiar with the Stats window. Once you have eliminated the viewer as the cause, you then have better ammo to bitch at LL with. YouR OP does hit home though. I can not run my estate at anything close to what I would consider reasonable performance. My tenants are very understanding(thank you!) but I do not expect them to put up with the current issues forever(mono Rez/tp sim pause). Personally I doubt I would leave over performance. But if this current one isn't fixed soon, I won't be able to stomach "reselling" this junk. |

sl aint the only viable virtual world anymore. I haven't yet seen a competitor to SL that offers even 1/10th the capabilities or possibilities of SL. Plenty of wanna-be's, but no contenders. _____________________

Blue Mars is nowhere close to being ready for prime time. SL is no where close to being ready for prime time either. get 60k people online at once and the grid goes poof half the time. |

SL regularly runs with over 60,000 users online, and was hitting 80,000 before the bot policy earlier this year. I think the grid has gone "poof" (as in it got bad enough they closed logins) maybe twice this year. _____________________

Officially that's all they've said, but there have been hints thtat there's more to it dropped at Linden Office Hours, though we haven't been able to pry anything solid from them. _____________________

I'm going through some kind of "SL-Burnout" atm and it's not due to SL performance issues, although those can get annoying. I have an older PC and am quite content to use the old school viewer with Nicholaz so that is also not an issue for me.
There's just nothing that really compels me to log on. Sometimes I do, try to think of what I want to do (and there *are* plenty of things), but just go "meh" and sign off. I'm kind of surprised I feel like this so soon, though. I first began socializing/chatting online via IRC and was there of and on for 15 years+ (that includes the time in the RP channel). I played EverQuest for 7 years until most of my friends went to Star Wars Galaxies. Tried that out and didn't like it. Was very heavily in an online diary community (pre-dating blogs) and spent most of my online time writing or reading my favorites. Became close friends with several as well as meeting some of these people offline. (I get occasional IMs on Yahoo asking if I'm coming back and I'm missed there.) Of course SL is entirely different than all of my other online activities. Ah well, no idea...just in some kind of SL ennui, so my answer would be yes I would consider leaving SL, but it wouldn't due to technological reasons and I would just go basic and be able to return when I wanted. _____________________
