would u consider quitting second life if performance doesnt improve?

I'm really considering it because
1. sl aint the only viable virtual world anymore
2. windlight, windlight, windlight (on low sl looks crappy now, and with fps tanking for no apparent reason on RECOMMENDED settings for many, many people who PAY for what ammounts to crap performance-its all over the jira), I've really considered striking out for better run pastures. have you?

I already pretty much did once, but it was time for a new comp anyway so I bit the bullet and upgraded. For a while there, it wasn't even worth loggin on SL...I couldn't move. I barely logged on at all most of the summer.

Now I have a new comp SL runs a lot better but if they keep requiring more to run it,won't be long till I'm all done lol,.

I would use whatever computer could get me into SL and allow me to see and speak with my friends, even if i could not go into malls or parties.

i got enuff computer to run sl on ultra antialiasing x16 and ano w/e enables at 512 m with fps in the 30-40 rangewhen sl LETSS me an on low with frame rates in the mid thirties otherwise, and its pissin me off.

sl runnin at its best the way it should look is a maybe kinda proposition or on low and looking crappy 50% of the time since 1.23 , the new server roll out or both. AND im payin monies for this crap.

Considering my system is "unrecognized" by Second Life due to being a NEW system! New as in MODERN, Totally UP-TO-DATE-NEAR-TOP-OF-THE-LINE EVERYTHING....

And SL doesnt recognize the hardware since its now considered "NEW" while it was recognized with the same hardware about 2 updates ago....

Well i run SL with those settings at 16x in SL at the Nvidia 3D manager thing, along with the 512m draw even on mainland.

I never notice my frame rate. Sure there is some lag at various spots on the grid, but it never bothers me. As long as i can cam around at high speed without screen stutter i am happy, and since i switched to my Quad/9800gt 1gb, my SL just zooms along. And even before then i did not have complaints.

I think many people who do all those FPS games are the ones that realize the frame rate the most because they are expecting like 60fps or faster or something, when anything over 23 looks fine. Heck the average person can't notice the difference between 16 & 23 fps. No biggie.

C'mon now...

but im guessing that it will WORK. i bet no major part of it was coded over a weekend. my fps dive bomd over time, similar problems litter the jira and i get a tap dance routine from support. i'm about done with this crap

TRY 4 or even 1.8. i dont want to hear that crap

amen, some nit wit in support actually had the nerve to say my 9 series geforce g card was unsupported because it wasnt listed speficially on thier crap requirements page. we're preparing the slow egress from this place

What's your sense of what the culture is going to be like there? Because MY impression, based admittedly just on my reading, is that it's going to be a lot less freewheeling and tolerant than SL. I wonder just exactly what kinds of content and behaviours they are going to allow?

That's a serious question, btw. Does anyone have a clearer sense of how "open" Blue Mars is likely to be to, just to name the most obvious thing, the sort of "adult" content still permitted in SL?

Wow.... I'm running a lowly nVidia 8600M-GS on a laptop - Ultra settings - running Linux - and my FPS *never* gets down that low! While I concede there have been framerate issues with the latest viewer, I have to think there's something wrong with your configuration if you're going down that low.

I also have to wonder why you're running antialiasing at 16x. That's overkill. I don't notice any difference between 4x and 8x except for slight loss of performance and textures with more-blurred edges. All you're really accomplishing with 16x AA is to soften edges into oblivion. Why do that to yourself? Take it down to 4x and enjoy the extra FPS you get from it.

To answer your original question: I'm not overly pleased with the performance of SL's grid right now. They had a good thing going back with the v1.22 viewers and v1.25 server. They had to go and muck it all up with this Adult Content fiasco. However, despite all of this, I still find the game playable and enjoyable. I'm not going anywhere for a while.

I wouldn't quit SL if it stays like it is now. Performance isn't *that* bad.. I remember '06. If it gets worse? yeah quite possibly. I'd be gone in no time if they ban the sexxors or blue mars hits it's stride.

Edit: Scylla, there was a Q&A with one of the bigwigs at BM, and he indicated that adult content would eventually be allowed if that's the way the world develops over there. Currently there is no mature or adult content allowed.

Interesting, and much along the lines of what I had thought. But how exactly is BM supposed to develop in the direction of adult content, if no mature or adult content is allowed? I suppose it will, as always, come down to money.

To be honest, BM sounds to me very interesting in some regards, and rather sterile in others. And I wonder if jumping ship from SL because one doesn't like the new corporate approach here might not be leaping from the frying pan into the fire: BM's set-up sounds VERY corporate, and very top-down, to me.

No. I've survived much, much worse from SL. Y'all shoulda been here in 2004 when we went down for DAYS after an update.
