I know it is possible to set it up so that it will only give you one copy (one of the Linden bears is set up that way on the Linden's land; touch to get, can't get anymore, it will say something about 1 per person if you touch again). I am not sure how that works. A script, I assume. Then you would have one transfer item to keep or give away. of course, then it would have to be no copy.

Ohhh...this would be great!

Talking about scripts............................................
I created my grid hunt gift locator script. Set a partial target name such as "Twisted Hunt" and when you get close it will map beacon the prize. Makes it much easier :p

Only 98% kept?

Yep, usually the color or style is not one I care for, or it's not modifiable or if mod, already adjusted to the smallest in the skirts and is still too big, or I already have it or tons like it :)

I was just confused because most that comment seem to indicate keeping only 2% of the hunt prizes.

That and the use of the word "only"

When I'm done sorting I may keep only half...

Mainly because most of the Vday hunt prizes were pink and frilly. My av is tall and looks like a lampshade in such things, a peeve I carry over from RL...

Twisted is more up my alley, although I look forward to the St Pat's hunt (Begins March 8) hoping it isn't ALL green.

I hate hunts- ridiculous waste of time and i turn my nose up at them consistantly- I participated in one once and made the stuff easy to find cause i hate the huntin gaspect of the hunt so much :)

Yes i want people to come to my store- but i dont sel torture devices, so why torture them into coming?

I know some people enjoy them tremendously- me- no thanks, I'll just buy the damn thing if I want it enough. The only exception to that was the little chihuahua shoulder pet that was in a hunt once- couldn't buy it so had to hunt :( Thankfully peeps showed up to help me.

I've done hunts. I hate when the owner is there starring at me because I get flustered and take forever to find something. And I assume they are laughing at me.

Which isn't a bad assumption. There was one place I found the prize immediately. But I recognized the prize as one I had seen a picture of and thought I might like. So I climbed down from where the prize was hidden and started wandering, looking at the items in the store. Owner started laughing loudly about all the stupid twits who can't find the prize.

Never going to that store again. Nor am I going to look at the prize. Even though I thought I might like it.

Going back to beginning and the owner who starred at me. She threw out a hint. Someone there said something like how they had found it, and the owner replied that sometimes people are so stupid that she has to be even more exact in her clue.

And people wonder why I whimper about hunts in group chat.

Needle in haystack - current hunt I am doing (and the above events occurred in this hunt) is Twisted. A small red box. Most of the stores seem to have red as part of their coloring. Many hide the small red box in a field of red. One hide the box inside a closed light. Another hide it behind a wall, more in the space between a front wall and a back wall. Space just large enough for the box.

I hate when there is not a list of the stores involved. Just starting location. So you have to find the prize there to get the LM to next place, and so on. So if some store is impossible, you end up done with that hunt. Even if you are just on the 8th place in 103 location hunt.

Sound off on whether you loathe or love prize hunts. Or are you somewhere in between. Can you see 'both sides' of it (shop owner and prize hunter)?

As shop owner or prize hunter what would you change about how the prize hunts are currently run.

Do you think it is OK for people to help each other with 'cheat sheets'.

It's all just opinions. Everyone's is valid, and for me anyway, everyone's is welcome...

Me? I am slow to rez, my eyes are not always the best, either. So I appreciate any hints and help...I am there to see new shops, not prove my 'skills' locating a needle in a haystack. On my list of accomplishments finding a prim in a parcel is about the millionth down the list.

What do you think. Have you done hunts? Were they worth your time? Would you do one again, or 'only if ____ " ?

No no no! You said you only kept 98%, which is practically everything.

So the 2% you threw away... I was thinking it had to be something small, like a pair of stockings.

Just teasing.

Yes!!

A few made the red box tiny as possible and hid it in front of something red. In a store the size of a RL city block, with slow-rezzing textures. Why would they do that. Or places that put it near a ceiling that makes avs look like ants below - and disable flying in their shop. Again why. Other than sadistic laughter.

I second the motion to boycott* that person's shop, if you let me know whose it was I will add it to those I won't be returning to, due to similar experiences on hunts.

One shop on Twisted has big pointing hands at the prize. I appreciate that time-saver, and bought a lot, to show it.

--

*not talking about an official one - just me joining the queue leaving such places off the shopping list. Bad economy, shop owners. Not smart.

Actually, that was two different places. First one involved a tall building with the prize hidden inside a bell. I climbed up into the bell and recognized the name of the prize as one that I had seen a picture of and thought looked neat. So I decided to explore the store. That one I remember the name because it was one of those weird names that make you scratch your head and wonder if it is legal to use in SL.

Other place . . .I do not remember what it is, nor what they were selling. I arrived. There was a house. I started looking. The owner shouted out some clue that implied looking at stairs leading to the attic. I looked up there. Nothing. A different person said they found it, causing the owner to make that "sometimes I have to be even more clear; glad you were able to get the clue" type comment. I was flustered so left. When I returned I looked harder. The prize was not at the teleport landing point. Nor was it in the house. It was in a completely different building. Nor did that other place have an attic. Nor was the prize near stairs.

Rika made a treasure hunt hud that I bought. You can give partial or exact names and have it look for scripted, active, or passive items. You can get it to show a beacon and even dump the location slurls to chat for you to copy. I use it anytime a hunt really gets frustrating.

I'm addicted to hunts as well, but find them a bane and a blessing.

Bane
* People who are so rude to models and owners that the stores drop out (ie Sn@tch in the Twisted Hunt)
* People who shout out locations and ruin the hunt fun for those who want to actually hunt.
* Boxed prizes. I hate having to unbox hundreds of items before wading through them all.
* Prizes that are store freebies that I've already got or are such poor quality. Hunters judge stores on things like that and won't return to buy from tacky prize stores.
* I don't mind stores moving the boxes around, cos I think that makes it more fun, but some of the hiding places...omg. I don't mind having to search and explore for maybe 5-10 mins, but in some places I have spent close to an hour and thats just too much!
* Too many going on at the same time. I did the Vain "Kiss" hunt but didn't do the "Greatest Love" one cos I just didn't have the time or energy. Plus I only just finished unpacking and sorting through the Xmas hunt stuff before doing it.

Blessing
* Finding new places to shop that I never knew existed
* Meeting new people and making new friends
* Having something to do with my countless hours in SL
* Adding to my collection of "I might need it someday" items

How do you find out about hunts? I would love to do some treasure hunts but don't know where to look for the info.

A lot of the major shops have signboards outside them, that contain hunt information. As of tomorrow a St Patrick's Day hunt will be going on, (through March 17), and right now a Twisted (goth/neko/vampire/etc.) hunt is going on, until the end of March.

Try searching 'events' with the word hunt or prize hunt or grid hunt. Or try some of the SL "freebie" blogs they seem to often mention hunt prizes.

A few freebie blogs: http://sl4nowt.wordpress.com
http://virtual-freebies.blogspot.com http://fabfree.wordpress.com

If you search flickr for Second Life groups there are some Freebie Flickr groups, too, where people snap pix and post them, of SL freebies. Search "Second Life free" and "SL free" to find the groups. They seem to be frequently updated.

Bane. They're not even special anymore because at any given moment there are a multitude of grid-wide hunts going on. This concept has been taken too far.

I recently did the Kids Grid-Wide hunt, and I LOVED IT! I love doing hunts... you get prizes and a lot of the time they aren't freebies. Or if they are, they are wonderful prizes. I love most of the prizes I got. Including a few from my favorite places. I will definitely do some more hunts.

Ruling: BLESSING!

This !!! They seem to definitely have gone into overkill.

And it really does seem that more and more of my prizes are freebies that the store already handed out. There are some exceptions, some places that I really like doing hunts at, but anymore those are simply individual stores or sims.

One hate about hunts in a single store or sim -- it is bad enough if the items take hours to find, but if I must actually find multiple items to get all the pieces to the outfit, then making the items super hard to find will really really irritate me.

And finally, for any hunt -- please tell me how many I am looking for and number the freakin items so I know if I have found them all. If I really like a store's clothing, I will actually spend the extra time to find every single hunt item.

Glad you had a positive time with it Alyssa. It's great when the prizes are really impressive/sale quality, and do not take an hour to find each one! That's prize-hunt manna.

LittleMe I agree about the split-up prizes. Another example of how some shop owners can get a bit 'precious' with it all. It's just...a...freaking...outfit for pity sake. Lol. No need to make someone spend half an hour hunting it piece by piece. 8^) JMO

Also yes not every prize is 'great' - I do appreciate the effort but shop owners gotta remember their customers' time is worth something *too*. I have taken to using my disposa-av to hunt, then going back as 'me' for the few items that I really wish to keep.

The St Patrick's hunt is pretty good, I haven't looked at all the prizes yet but it is super easy. A definite plus. Shops get publicity/potential new subscribers, hunters see new shops/get prizes. Woot and woot.

And ty in advance for the HUD. :)
