Has an avatar ever freaked you out/suprised you/scared you?

Necroposts don't scare me, and I don't see the reason forums need that many threads anyway... Using search would make so much more sense.

Avatars don't scare me -- my sense of creepy is completely broken. People don't believe me when I say their avatar doesn't shock me, but it is true - it doesn't.

Lawyers and administrative decisions may make me scared for the future, though.

Reviving this thread is a great idea for this time of year.

I think one of the creepiest things I've seen lately is a location called The Far Away, Dreamworld North. It seems to be based on something - a game, a TV show, an art project, I don't know -- but it's got a lot of atmosphere and odd lighting and puts you in a seemingly infinite field of wheat. I feel utterly irrevocably alone there. I don't think that was the intent of the place. In fact I'm not sure I understand the intent. This is just the feeling it gives me.

There are several other sims in the same series including Wales Springs. All give me the same feeling. They are profoundly atmospheric places. I don't think I want to know what they're really about. That might ruin it for me.

yep, I was reminded of the time just today, when I put on my flapper costume for a 20s event.

When I first assembled the outfit long ago, I finally had a front view of my avatar, and almost fell out of my chair.

I had created the spitting image of my own grandmother when she was young!

It was VERY eerie!

Grammy would have been stoked to have been in a 2 way tie for the best dressed ;)

Most of the horror avs don't scare me, although some of the mutant stuff at Grendels looks a little disturbing.

The ones that weird me out the most are the strangely distorted, usually male avatars, often grossly fat with exaggerated features. They generally are near-naked, and just use the default avatar skin and hair. More than their appearance, I'm nervous of their behaviour... just turning up somewhere and walking around without responding to anyone.

Maybe they're non-English speakers, maybe they just want to look around without being bothered, but it still feels weird to me, and the appearance is just the icing on the cake.

I haven't even gone that far. Hearing normal voices from SL avatars already bothers me: they need to put voice on the back burner until they completely redo the avatar model... it's too damn close to the uncanny valley as it is.

I find this too. Using voice in SL seems to spoil the immersive experience for me and I lose the mental connection to the SL world and the feeling of being there.

Whilst it's pleasant to hear the voice of a trusted friend, inworld I find this separates the conversation from the on-screen scenario somehow and pulls me back to Me in RL - and then might just as well be having a conversation on the phone or any of the messenger programmes.

As to the OP: it's the people -behind- the avatars that are the freaky part, and the way some of them don't seem to care one iota about what they say or do to anyone else.

I was actually startled once by a wolf avatar who was standing in the dark area of my club, and I didn't see him. He just started to talk to me, and when I quick looked to see who it was, it scared me. lol stupid really.
