I've been freaked out by an "avatar" once - but it may not have been a real avatar. Except... Well, let me explain. I was visiting a place called the "Devil's Labyrinth", which is a sort of haunted house, but slightly more hardcore than the Carnival. It's a multi-path maze filled with disturbing sounds and imagery. There are many ways out, and a few ways to not get out. In any case... After going through a certain part of the maze, I emerged in what looked like the sanctuary of a decent-sized long-abandoned cathedral. I headed up the aisle toward the altar, and noticed that in the left-hand bank of pews was sitting someone - a black-robed hooded figure. The typical avatar name floated above the figure - I do not remember the name, but I remember that his group title was "Dark Priest". The name also had the (Away) indicator in it. So I passed him and went up to the altar (a coffin, appropriately enough) and obtained a freebie shirt or something, when suddenly the Dark Priest said "You look kind of cute." I was in my typical kid av, and presumed he was talking to me, so I turned to face him. The (Away) indicator had disappeared, as if he'd come back. But something occurred to me. Although his name (not the group name) preceded his chat like you'd expect, all his text was in green - the chat of an object, not an avatar. I took a close look at him, and found that when right-clicking on his name or his body, I did not get the avatar pie menu (with the options like IM and Profile, etc); I got the object pie menu (with options like "Edit" . I left-clicked on him/it, and in the same green object chat text, he said "That tickles". I found that by repeatedly clicking on him, I could cycle through a set of about 4 different stock "replies". "That tickles" was among them. "You look kind of cute" was not, but I didn't think on it."Ha," I said in open chat. "You're not real." In green text came a reply. "Sure about that, are you?" it said. THAT freaked me out. I scooted back down the aisle without a word and off to the rest of the maze. I went there last night, amazing! I saw the black-robed guy with red eyes sitting in a pew. He never spoke to me, and his 'Away' status was always on. I truly think you met an evil spirit that took over the npc. Ooooohhh... Scary!!! _____________________

tch, the woman with the 5 kids is smoking while carrying an infant, how irresponsible. Doesn't she realise how much lag particles can cause?
The only person who ever scared me was the guy who TPd into my house while I was naked. Weird, because I'm not exactly shy in SL. I was so caught off-guard that it was like actually being seen naked by a stranger. _____________________

Although it does seem to have unnaturally lengthened her legs. _____________________

Not sure about that comment, Trout. I've had 3....size 5 before I started, still a size 5. Although the length of my legs remained the same

No AVs have freaked me out yet
04-19-2008 08:26
I have quickly gotten used to the randomness of SL, when I see a crazy AV, I just inspect it to see where it might have come from.
I find it really funny to spontaneously change form one AV to a completely different one with new guys around, like for example wile someone was explaining how to fly (like "Neo" I switched from a tiny robot into a "Matrix" themed normal sized AV and back, confusing the hell out of a near by newbie (his exact words: "What exactly is this place again?"![]() |

*waves* hi Mac. miss ya! ![]() Awww..and Isabeau too. But answer the question, the time I ran into The Sheepbot creeped me out. I was in a store alone and he TP'ed right on top of me, and stood there for a minute making jerky spastice movements. He was very Newb Ugly, and it just sort of freaked me out a bit. Then he TP'ed out. _____________________

Actually, though this one occured in SL, it could have occured in RL, too. One night, in a club I frequent, into the club came an avie that looked identical to my first love: my high school boyfriend as he looked then. At normal viewing distance, it was a heart-stopping resemblance. I had to zoom my camera very close to reassure myself that it was not he. Adding significantly to my heart stoppage is the fact that he had died young.

My first skin was pretty scary. It had really ugly deformed lips and second set of eyes
on his cheeks. Does that count? _____________________

Apparently playing with my new treant from Grendel's a lot of people shouted on voice Omg I didn't realize that tree was someone and they say they got scared. Alternative question: What was the scariest avatar you've ever seen? In a weird way, a bunch of dog avs were playing as dogs under the street lights at Crack Den. Totally silent, but just enough intelligence present to give them that Twilight Zone spookiness. Probably completely unintentional, but spookier than a ten foot av with tentacles and warped face. |

Necroposts scare me. ![]() And it's been wierd the way some threads are popping up. They don't seem to be the types of things a new person would be searching for. _____________________

I have yet to see an av that "freaks me out", not counting when I'm out dancing and all of a sudden my cam is stuck on someone's teeth.. from the inside of their head. I can get startled tho if I am focused on something and sudden objects appear on the screen or I hear unexpected sounds.
Been freaked once tho, but not by an av. It was at The Devil's Labyrinth and I suddenly found myself staring at the chick from The Ring. Cheated my way outta that room asap. ^_^' |

Sensibilities shattered! Kinks exposed!
10-09-2008 10:45
Coming to SL from a non-game, blog, IRC and anything else virtual or internetally social, I brought all my RL sensibilities with me.
I found a lovely little hobbit skyhouse and was happily putting it together with rose trellis when I realized that a newbie avatar was going at it with a someone strapped into some sort of device in a skybox which was open for all to see! My intro to cyber and BDSM terrified me! I had no idea that this stuff happened in SL. I felt exactly the same shock I would feel if this had happened in RL. To make it worse, after a moment he flew right into my house! I didn't know about freeze and eject..I was so shocked I just TPd away to a nearby parcel and then watched while he made himself at home in my new little house. I deleted my house from my distant watching point and he fell as the floors vanished from beneath him then flew away. It is testimony to how much I've changed in that now I would just turn my house a bit or raise it higher and possibly set up a low range security orb if this guy was my neighbor. For all you old hands this probably sounds really stupid or over sensitive but I really didn't have a different set of expectations for virtual reality and RL and this would have been quite a weird experience for me in RL. Interestingly I'm a lot more tolerant in RL now too though I do find myself going out for dinner and looking around the restaurant and realizing that all these people might have far more exotic interests than I ever previously imagined! _____________________

I had someone appear just outside my home once as a see-through high-tech mechanical skeleton, with a furry fox head and tail stuck on it. It was like watching a zombie walk into the room, so horribly torn up that it couldn't possibly live. It really got to me, and I had to leave. (I would have banned and ejected the person, but they were a friend of my SL mate...) I later insisted that the owner of that avatar NEVER wear it again on my land or in my presence. Edit: I've had several people now tell me they tried to talk to my stunt double, and got upset/worried/angry/freaked out when they realized it really WAS just a hologram. ![]() |

I've [gone voice] twice. It was very stressful for me, and the people that heard me are still recovering from the nightmares. (^_^) Or else force everyone to use "Tiny Toons" style voice changers. |
