From: Graphicguru Gustav Chas... I was dead serious when I said the mind is the best weapon. Being a person who was killed by a griefer, I am not laughing at all. I think that when all is said and done, when exploring, and wandering into an unknown region, it is best to have your log active and if you have a MystiTool and know how to use it can defend you as well. The best offense or defense is BEING PREPARED. There are many, many, ways of defending yourself in SL, and a few were mentioned in this thread. Then again, there are times when levity is the best weapon...not taking things too serious. The time I was attacked and killed by a griefer, I began to boil inside...they got under my skin. After a few hours of cooling off, I had to laugh a little, and it helped. Maybe there should be a way for LL to disable NOOBs from buying weapons in their first 2 months of life in SL, which would prevent the need for 95% of parrying against unwarranted attacks. Seriously folks... I agree with you. Griefers only achieve what they wantto achieve when they get inside your head. They're very sad people who thrive, it seems, on upsetting others. If they don't upset you, they've lost. As for rules to limit griefers' access to weapons, good luck. but they'll always be around. Like school bullies, they're best ignored.

From: Aminom Marvin Default library popgun. It is the greatest object ever created in Second Life. That's cool, but I prefer the freebie snowball thrower or waterbomb thrower from Abranimations.

I have to agree with Aminom. Nothing says "I own joo" like popgunning some orb wearing prayer animated "I'm so cool I reek of 1337" emo/goth/supercool Neko/gangsta/n00bz0r You can almost feel the veins throbbing in they're little skulls as they trap, blind, fry and deform you. Classic.

Ahh happened to me this very AM. Walked in a sandbox instantly trapped in a green blob. Sat on it and instantly orbited so I did a quick TP home landing with my left leg from the knee down attached to my chin. Arms from the shoulders down looked similar to Edward Scissor hands. I didnt have time to turn on my shield I usually have on but I did get a nice pic and a snicker. Best of luck to you on the search.

Actually, I _do_ know a bit about weapons, though I stopped scripting "ownage" weapons a long time ago; I used to go a bit overboard. Nowadays I build extra malfunctioning elements into weapons that I make, and quite a lot of them won't even push, let alone do anything as _gauche_ as orbiting or caging or any of that rubbish.
I was also quite serious about the Region/Estate window being the best weapon, apart of course from God mode. You're not going to get very far if I can turn off physics, ban you from an entire region, return all your scripted objects etc etc.
The whole point is that there is no "ownage" in SL. There is griefing, where the best tools are surprise and persistence and a lack of anything else in one's life. And then there are individual sub-rulesets; there will be preferred weapons in RP sims, for instance, but others will be banned. The choice depends on the rules concerned, and if you push the rules and get banned, well, you have lost.

Your wits. Exousia. Ownage. Luc Aubre? Run away! Mystitool. Friends. Courtesy to all? Right Thought. Always Generous. Bribes? Situational awareness. Nothing, however, beats the elegance of an AWP headshot from 2000 meters away. Whatever works for you.

Rez a prim, make it physical, toss a "bump" script into it. Then left click and drag the prim into a bunch of noobs at the Welcome area in SL.
It is the best weapon in SL and certainly funny to watch.

And here I am still looking for an international orange or neon green tiny squirtgun with a fab weapons script so that when a Greifer pulls out his machine gun/rocket launcher/hyper laser I can defend mysself with laughter first and a good kick in the behind second Actually in my almost two years in SL I have yet to shoot anyone in a combat situation... (but I did try out mystitools weapons on a friend who was willing to see what effects it had firsthand)

If you are not a Linden and not on your own land (or don't own any), it is very helpful to have something for dealing with griefers. Just how much heat you carry should depend on your temperament. If you want merely to be defensive, immune to nearly all attacks you are ever likely to see, I can vouch for Force Prophecies as a delight - sit on your little blue disc in the lotus position, and you can fly through walls, cages, or other obstacles like they weren't there. Plus, lots of other features. I believe you have to buy it on SL Exchange these days. Mystitool is very highly regarded, appears to have even more extras, and is even more inexpensive, but I haven't actually used it myself. Doesn't look like you can go wrong either way. If you want to go more upscale, the JVTek shield looks almost unbeatable outside of Rausch, where exceedingly evil demons dwell, but if you are not a warrior or Boba Fett type you don't want to go there anyway.
If you are in a mood to carry the fight to the griefers, the earlier advice about using your brain and having a sense of humor about it is absolutely your first, must-have equipment. There are plenty of griefers around who try to sucker you into looking like the offender rather than the sherriff, so they can use LL to grief you by filing ARs on YOU. Always wait for them to attack first, keep your chatlogging on, and remember that two can play that game. Otherwise, you can get suspended or banned by a hurried Linden who wasn't there to see what actually happened. Besides a very good shield, you can look at Apocalypse HUD and what I believe may be the state-of-the-art weapon system in SL at this time, Quantum Core (the creators are bitter enemies and fierce rivals). Beware, however, they are both quite expensive. You should also look into some of the better anti-griefer groups around. They include The Justice League and Anti-Griefer Special Operations.
Some people like the Dopestyle HUD, but it is clearly designed for griefers, who do like to use it if they are willing to put money into their "hobby," so I advise you to avoid it - sooner or later people using it are going to get a bad reputation just for doing that, and you don't need to be one of them.
Unless you are intending to be a griefer yourself, in which case, I will be pleased to do everything I can to get you banned permanently, and so will almost everyone else in SL.

From: Sonia Nagy Mystitools can orbit an avatar, toss an avatar, and many many other things that I haven't looked at (like "crush" and "die" and the like). I've had avatars/attachments damaged by orbits. Depending on um . . penguins? (I don't know), some were for-ever-after corrupted. - which raises the stunningly obvious questions -- why with those capabilities are such devices allowed to exist in SL? Do we get merit points for having the capability but never using it? -- is there any worthy purpose in corrupting attachments? (Well, there are probably some attachments that could do with a good permanent corrupting, but that would not be a legit thing to do)

(Well, there are probably some attachments that could do with a good permanent corrupting, but that would not be a legit thing to do) Actually, what gets corrupted is the script(s) in the iteration of your attachment you are actually wearing. Sometimes you can reset the scripts; more often you have to solve the problem by deleting that iteration and rezzing a brand-new one - which will work just like the old one did. Scary, the first time your attachments break, but not asw bad as it seems - like a lot of things in SL. ; )

Iteration? Do you mean instance? So if it's no copy, you're done? Or will rezzing it on the ground and then taking it fix it?

If you want a taste of what region/estate powerz can do, look me up sometime when I'm not lost in IM's. Just ah... don't eject dozens of sims worth of people, or obliterate any regions. Not cool to do that! The best power around is usable with a mere 512m bit of land, or even smaller. Anybody bugs you on your land, use the little circly menu on their avatar - press 'more' and then select 'Freeze'. They can't move, they can't chat, they can't nuffin. That's about as pwned as it gets, and it's free and wicked easy.

Iteration, instance - I don't want to bog down in semantics. You're deleting the busted item, rezzing the box it came in that is in your inventory, taking up a new copy of the item, and attaching that. Good as new. Because in fact, it is new. Of course, this assumes SL hasn't borked your inventory. Sometimes SL is the worst griefer of all.
