I thought about starting a poll asking if they should just change their name to Linden Labs, but naw.. how about we just spread the word:

The "Lab" bit is singular. It is not plural. Therefore, it is..

And the next time you don't like something that's different than it was before, remember something - the men and women who develop this thing are people.. men, women, with feelings. It's one thing to say "you know, I really don't like this. How about.. this instead?".. It's another thing to say "those incompetent fucknuts should be fired". Not very community minded in my opinion. We all need to pull up our big boy/girl pants here, and get behind Linden Lab. There are ways to voice dissatisfaction, and what I've seen in the forums and the blog comments is simply deplorable.

I think the issue is that LL has made it more and more difficult for people express their dissatisfaction in a meaningful way and, when they do find one (such as Project Open Letter) a little lip service is paid, but no one ends up with the feeling that LL actually cares what we think. That leads to frustration and, the longer it goes on, the more frustrated people get and the less likely it becomes that they're going to try for diplomacy. Why should they care, after all, if LL doesn't appear to?

Yeah, and the whole Lab vs. Labs thing was needlessly anal.

I'm mostly with you on this topic. I tried out the new viewer version today, being careful to keep the old one handy in case it was as bad as people are saying. I can't honestly say it has any impact on the way I use SL. It's like the difference between diving a 1997 Saturn and 2007 Saturn. You might have to look to find where things are, but they are still there. (OK, I admit there may not be a cassette player any more on the 2007 Saturn, but . . .)

I am a little alarmed at how vocal people are about it. If we are pioneers of virtual worlds, and this may be the first open ended one, we should expect some hardship, if you could call sitting in your home at a computer, single malt scotch in hand a "hardship."

As for the whole Linden Lab(s) -- most well known companies using the word Lab call themselves Labs today. It's just human nature to say what you hear. A very long time ago I was a young man and I would get angry when people referred to Jethro Tull as "he." I have grown up a lot since then. (Yes, the movie Armageddon helped this along a little bit, and the band themselves laugh at the impractical name.)

So I think Lab or Labs won't offend the Lindens and I trust they are mature enough to know people complain so much because they love the metaverse, game, or whatever it is, and are afraid of change.

We'd prolly be a bit more sypathetic to those people at LL if they actually talked WITH us BEFORE putting in features.

The big point of all this isn't so much Voice. It isn't so much that is a poorly implemented feature.

It's that LL continues to put in more and more new "Features" on top of bugs and exploits. If LL would FIX the bugs and THEN add features, less would be upset. However, some of these bugs ahve been around since SL was first powered up.

Any tech will tell you that building on a buggy platform is dumb. Fix it first, then add to it. Sounds so simple, but it's apparently such a hard concept for LL to grasp.

well he has a point people can be excessively negative about Linden Lab.

While I can be negative I do at least try to be negative about what they are actually responsible for.

Rather than blaming them for things they had no real choice over (such as the gambling ban).

And the OP is right about people's attitudes to LL, for all the problems this is the only thing of its type, so if you think you can do better, set up your own company and we'll all sign up.

I meant that we'll all sign up when it runs perfectly with no lag, no griefers, no need to update because the software is perfect, and everyone makes a $1,000,000 in their first month.

Until then, I'll stay here too, because for all it's faults, SL is the best thing out there.

EDIT: and for all those accusing the OP of being anal about the name, the front page of the website uses Lab.

I think 'all' was just me, but there's still no reason to get cranky over an extra s...like someone else said, 'Labs' is more commonly used in business names, so that's what most people expect. It's an honest and easily made mistake. *shrug*

"Linden Lab" is a trademark, owned by Linden Research, Inc.

"Linden Lab", used to refer to the business or the office, is a nickname. With offices in multiple locations, one could make a credible claim that there are now multiple labs and hence Linden Lab has now expanded into Linden Labs.

How about... If you don't like it stop paying for it? Or even better... If you are paying for a product, does that not entitle you to the right to critique it? Ech, I don't pay for it, but if I did, which I wouldn't, that'd be my stance. I pay for somethin, I should have every right in the universe to complain about shit malfunctioning.
