re: teh discussions as to colors ... be aware that you can recolor and retexture any mod hair yourself. You can buy hair textures quite legitimately inworld and on SLX - some salons actually sell hair textures there. Then you can retexture a copy of a style you like however you wish. So if you have a very very favorite hair texture, it may be worth it to buy it and try it with styles you own. (Make a copy first!)

Of course this will not always give great results. Some stylists are very careful about placements of highlights etc. on their hair, or use multiple textures within a style, and anything you do casually will just look worse. But some simply create a set of textures and apply them to all their new hairs. I often have pretty good results with recoloring or retexturing; however, with some stylists I simply go back and buy all the colors I want, because they do it better than I possibly could.

I finally broke down and retextured my favorite hairstyle - the black was too grey and it bothered the devil out of me- but I couldn't find a black in the same general style after weeks of looking. It was much easier than I expected- much harder than I hoped.

I'm a big fan of ETD, and I like Diversity's styling although the textures bug me (the one I retextured was an old Diversity style that's been retired).

I've tried nearly all mentioned and have settled on Gurl6 completely. But, it's a size issue for me. My av is petite and so are my alts, so that means the head sizes too. Gurl6's hairs come in 3 sizes and the small always is a perfect fit. And, I do like the styles, freebies, colors, etc. But the lag in there is a bitch.

There are a couple others mentioned which I haven't tried yet - ETD for instance. The one thing Gurl6 does not do yet, which I'm dying for is a really long, Rapunzel like curly head of hair in blonde or red. If any of the others come sized like Gurl6 and make something like that, let me know!

I too, am a hair whore.

Sirena hair comes in three sizes. She also has a Rapunzel style. Not sure how curly it is though. :)

ETA: the Rapunzel style isn't curly, but she's got some other ones that might qualify. Check out her long hair at: http://slnatalia.blogspot.com/2007/07/sirena-hair-womens-long.html

Following all the mentions on this thread I might give Calico another shot. I went there ages ago and bought a nice style. Very long and flowing. Lots of flexi bits but quite subtle movement. So many prims though... I turn my head and the sim crashes.

Rapunzel

I thought Rapunzel had straight hair anyway? Didn't she plaid it into a rope to let the prince climb up or was that another story?

I think Sally has a point about some places having more effective styles for a particular colour. When I first put my girl together last year, Gurl6 was big and busy but kind of manageable. Well, for the redhead treatment I picked Babe, a 'do' I still adore.

Going back later on my blonde project I was lagged to death with the increased range but nothing there to take my fancy. I hunted high and low for a decent, solid, 60's bob until someone suggested ETD and there it was, second on the right, Patricia. Short, shapely, she gets lots of compliments.

My brunette is still a kind of transient, currently still using ETD's Regina, another straight but longer. Just sometimes we don't want the gravity defying twirly do's ;)

Yes, but I'm not sure whether the story specifies curly or straight hair, but that's adifferent story :p

I've never been able to find any stuff I liked at Gurl6. The place in itself is enough to make me want to run away, most styles are a bit too "big" for my taste, plus I'm not keen on the blonde textures.
There are actually quite a few of the bigger names mentioned here that do nice styles, but blonde textures that look decidedly yellow or green, or just plain dirty. I wash my hair frequently. :D

I like Analog dog. Their hair structure is wonderful and realistic, i think. Long wawy curls mmmm.... They have color change HUD's too, so i can buy a blonde or light pack and change it into red or dark colors. And still have the blonde colors, since their hair is copyable. The only thing i don't like with Analog Dog is that their updo's range is almost nothing. Bewitched hair is another one, but i think their hair is a bit too curly and big. Bewitched has good deals on the members of their hair update group. So has Calla. Analog Dog should give their customers some favors too, but so far they have nothing.

Hi Marianne!

Analog Dog has two groups - Analog Dogs that updates customers on new items, etc. and then when one has purchased a certain number of styles, you can join Analog Dolls and that group has all kinds of wonderful things for customers. =D

(I just purchased the long curls yesterday and just LOVE the way they move when I walk.)

Bilbo, maybe you're right. Maybe I should have said "Pre-Raphaelite", that's probably more in line with what I meant.

I LOVE that style as well and searched high and low. I first found "Beyonce" at Sirena's. Nice tendrils around the face. This one also has a light source built into it.

But recently...I found a couple at Analog Dog that are to die for. The two styles are similar but have slight differences, so grab the demos and check out which works best for you:

Madison is one. And the other is Astrid (I think). If you find Madison, looking straight at the board Astrid is about 3 over to the left. Astrid is the one I purchased yesterday and ADORE!!!!

I'm a redhead but saw the same style on one of my blonde friends and it looked darling on her as well. =D

Tami McCoy is the only person I ever buy hair from. I wear red, and her red is the only one that doesn't make me look like a Puerto Rican hooker. Her flex is great -- natural, normal, and not overly flowy, it also doesn't make you resemble Medusa. Hairstyles by Tami is very realistic and natural.

I've tried some others, and try them on -- gag -- and throw them away.

It is more about individual hair to me, really. Hair is just such a diverse, imaginitive art in SL.

In terms of hair that I wear, the work-a-day ones that reside on my head most of the time:

RaC
Aden

Hair that I thought I would wear and now seem to never wear:

Armidi ( *gasp* I know 'thou shalt offer props to Armidi', but for some reason I put it on and meh, something about the movement doesn't do it for me.)

Hair stores that I was really happily surprised with in terms of quality, value, imagination, etc., and that I always go look when I have "special needs" situations:

Maitreya
Crimson + Clover
Zero Style
LaLa
FRANGIPANI DESIGNS

The hair that I cannot every part with, and even though I don't wear it much any more is really 'me', is a Glamour bob from Gurl6, the very first hair I ever had, gotten through the free hair for noobs deal she has. If all my other hair disappeared and it was stuck on my head permanently, I could live with it.

I am a redhead, and the only hair I've found that I didn't have to tweak the color on was Aden's. I can't imagine buying hair and needing it to be the exact color I prefer. I dunno where you've seen your Puerto Rican hookers, but I can't really imagine them having hair the shade of Aden, or RaC, or many of the others.

My all time Favorite hair is the hair I got through that newbie deal at Gurl6. July is the name. Limited edition. Curious how many others acquired that limited edition.

I've only used Tami McCoy's wonderful hair, but I've seen some nice ones from Here Comes Trouble (HCT).

I have Astrid. Really like it. Wasn't quite as big on Madison. After reading all the posts in the thread, I checked out ETD this morning and snatched a ton of demos. Not sure about them, though. There are a couple of ponytails I like. I do have to say, though, that her updos are some of the best I've seen.

Sirena's, Gurl 6, and Calla and "Lola" style from Analog Dog. I LOVE the Rapunzel hair from Sirena's. It was the first hair I bought and once I put it on I magically morphed into a non-noob. Calico is ridiculously expensive and their floaty, ethereal style hair doesn't appeal to me. To each their own I guess. Hair choice depends also on particular face shape and avatar style hence many peeps like Deviant Kitties but I haven't found a style that looks right on me. Why is ETD so popular?? I've always have to mess with the size because the hair never fits right. Buying from Sirena's and Gurl 6 is much more convenient with their small, medium, and large sizes

The pink demo thing is stupid. I want to see what the maker's hair texture is REALLY like which is hard to determine with hot pink hair.

I've been hearing some good things about RaC. I'll have to check it out. But I also heard its expensive which I don't doubt.

I like Goldie Locks the best of them all. Hair depends so much on your shape and skin that it is impossible to say which one would look best on you. I am a small person with blond hair and many of the Goldie Locks ones look good on me.

The owner of Goldie Locks doesn't seem to have embraced the "goth look" like some others have so you will find some nice looking normal hair there.

Frangipani Designs, Cake and Analog Dog. I wear my "Soma" style from Analog all the time.
I'll also give an honourable mention to TRUTH. I went to thier main store a few nights ago and found a whole collection of new hair to try.

If I may steal Susie's comment for another creator, "you will find some nice looking normal hair there."

Heck, even Morgaine's bought hair at ETD :)
