I actually think LL got the menu names right originally by following the naming convention used by windows (file, edit, view, tools, etc..). Most people understand that so I think changing them to something unique and *stupid* is a bad move, especially for noobs trying to learn where stuff is.

The fly-out menus on the side are cool... now if we can have one for inventory that'd be even better. If they allow us to create *custom* fly-outs like we now do with folders ?!?! That might rank right up there with sex. No more scrolling left and right to find that little + sign, every sorted, named folder is it's own side menu.. *fans herself*

I guess losing the pie menu isn't that bad, as long as everything you expect to be there is there. Dunno... the pie is just how it's done though.

I do like the dark black and grey theme mentioned.. matches my theme override for nearly every window, app, menu, and toolbar ON my computer.

I also agree that a mere GUI update isn't worthy of the 'SL 2.0' moniker. Now, combine that GUI with a new sub-divided grid, 1 or 2 sims per server, new working search, new AV, custom controls and/or keymapping, custom materials and shaders, new build tools, land privacy settings, fly zones, etc..? yeah that'd be worthy of calling it that.

In NWN to Hamlet Au regarding these images, Tateru is quoted as saying,

"They inadvertently published it. I grabbed it," she told me this morning via Twitter. "That is, it went somewhere publically accessible and I accessed."

It could be close to their final release or it could be an old mock up - no one really knows as of yet. Personally I think that should have been disclosed in the massively article.

Some better reporting on this whole issue ...
http://dusanwriter.com/index.php/2009/06/12/new-second-life-20-viewer-not-yet-in-view/

I asked the Lab, however, for comment, to confirm how close the interface design was to “final” and the response was as follows:

“That was an early version of ‘Viewer 2009′ and the project has progressed dramatically since then.”

How to be a highly-paid consultant company:

Look at what the client is doing now.

Talk to virtually no one who actually uses the product.

Shuffle the control interface at random.

(Bonus for adding cryptic or insulting menu names).

Add one or two shiny new features.

Make several changes just to make changes.

Present a huge bill.

Pay a kickback to the insider that agreed to hire your company in the first place.

Turn your back on the screaming users of the product

Laugh all the way to the bank.

===

The ONLY feature in that interface that looked useful was having multiple Friends Lists.

The rest? *Shuffle deck of cards and hand it back to client.* "There's your new UI. $50,000 dollars, please. US, not your in-world play money.

;0 needs more salt. ;)

p.s. i sure hope that a real 'finder'-able style of inventory window is in the works with all that... really wish double-clicking a folder would open a new window of that folder, instead of just expanding downward... takes sometimes 10-15 seconds just to find and open a source folder, then open a new inventory window, then another 10-15 seconds just to find and open the desired destination... that's about all i could ask for from v2. oh, and if it would have common finder-style date created/modified columns to sort by too... :)

When the blog is frequently unreachable and once you do get to it you can't use the polling system because the selection control doesn't appear at all, this does not make you look forward to an interface change in the viewer. Just think of the opportunities for bad judgment and failure to recognize mistakes that provides.

I just barely had time to look at the article this morning. Did I interpret it correctly that there will be little buttons jutting out on the right side over top of the world view? This was one of the things I didn't like about the Novoking virtual world's viewer. I want my workspace, which for SL is the world view, empty when I'm not doing anything.

Am I the only one who came here & found the original interface ridiculously easy??

Dated, yes. Hard to figure out?? I didnt think so.

I still remember skipping OI and going right to a sandbox to build.

No. I've never quite understood the "it's too hard to use" thing.

If you've never played a computer game before, like me, it takes a little bit to figure out, but even so, I was off OI in a couple of hours.

That was my experience, in that it took me a while to figure out, not having played computer games much at all. I recall it taking me what seemed like forever on how to use my camera controls and having to fly up in the air to click on a dance ball lol. I did figure it all out eventually but some stuff just really isn't all that intuitive and I still run into people much older than I that still don't have a lot of the basics down.

I think LL wants a "big tent" approach, making the new UI more intuitive for less techy folks while still retaining the more advanced features that you can grow into or for those more experienced. Regardless of what they do, even if "viewer 2.0" gave you the ability to end world hunger, some people will choose to hate on it, since change can be harder for some than others. It'll be a rough go for a while but I think LL has to innovate in order to grow and maintain a competitive advantage.

I was the same way. Never done first person games before, was clueless. The information that came up under "Help" in 2004 was even less helpful than "Help" on any Microsoft Product.

My guess would be that all the serious gamers have already tried SL and either loved it or hated it. Now the market is non-gamers who are having a hard time with the UI.

I think a lot of people don't realize that the new LL regime is all about expanding the audience and fixing the dismal retention rate. I think the desires of existing residents fall lower on the priority list than getting new users in the door and past the first few hours.

I hope all the debug things are there. I use tons of them, and frequently. "Hide Selected," "Show color under cursor," "Slow Motion Animations," "Debug Permissions," are some common very useful settings. Some I use daily, others I don't use all the time but would mourn the loss of.

I have a huge crush on the UI. It's like a fantastic territory I've been able to explore over time, and learning about it has been a rewarding task.

I think human beings are hardwired for leveling; with that in mind there should be, say, 25 levels of viewers, and a newbie begins with a stripped down easy viewer, but is told that with diligent study he can attain access to the SL Uber Viewer 2.0.0 (cue choir of angels) with fengshui skins and the greatest inventory capacity of all the levels.

Levels could come with an identifier, like, say, name or dot color or something in the profile. Once at the highest level you are done - leveling is over, but he can make an informed choice whether to stick around or not, based on how capable he is at creating his own goals.

I'm not pro games, truthfully, but I think a great proportion of the people who drop in need a game aspect.

I hope you think that should be an OPTION, if not, seeing that would not make me want to stick around. I'm not interested in dilligently studying SL, it's entertainment.

I'm a non-gamer. I haven't played any video games since my kids started whupping my ass on the nintendo, and I've never been into 3d games at all.

I don't have a hard time with the SL UI at all. If it was like a game UI I probably would, but it's a completely conventional professional application UI... it's even better than many 3d graphic apps like Bryce and Blender, let alone the kind of crud gamers seem to like.

So I don't think the SL UI is targeting "serious gamers" at all.

LL needs to stop making changes and :

1. Fix the bugs that are out at present
2. Give avatars better mesh and improve appearance mode controls
3. Listen to the users and what WE want
4. See what other viewers have done, and add a few of the best features to this viewer

THEN work on new features!

Well thats what I think :)

How about *requiring* all employees to make alts and spend a certain amount of work week time in-world?

Then maybe the changes would be practical instead of just 'sounds sexy at a meeting' changes.
