From: Rani Vayandar While it appears I can buy Linden now, it wants to charge my credit card and won't let me use the $25USD I already paid that's sitting in my account.
In my experience, it goes through the process the same way for every purchase, regardless of whether you have credit or not, but it does pull from that credit first and only charges your payment method if you exceed the USD already in your account.

Thanks for the reply, Ann. I'm just afraid to hit "Buy" because it says it will charge my credit card. It doesn't mention anything about my credit. I already feel duped because the page I went to said I HAD to buy a minimum of $25. That was more than I wanted to spend for my first try at this. If my card gets charged a second time, I'm worried I'll never see my first $25. It doesn't help my confidence that Customer Service hasn't been much help. If I do try to buy thr Linden and my card gets charged a second time, will I be able to get the first $25 back? I appreciate the help.

From: Rani Vayandar Thanks for the reply, Ann.
I'm just afraid to hit "Buy" because it says it will charge my credit card. It doesn't mention anything about my credit. It's a generic message...it doesn't mention your credit because not everyone will have one when making a L$ purchase. Nonetheless, it should pull from the credit on your account first. From: someone I already feel duped because the page I went to said I HAD to buy a minimum of $25. That was more than I wanted to spend for my first try at this. You weren't duped, you simply went to the wrong page. You wanted the 'Linden Dollar Exchange' link; 'Increase Your Credit' is generally used for fees paid in USD (Premium membership, land tier, etc) or sometimes as a budgeting technique for people who allot themselves a certain allowable spending amount per week/month/etc. From: someone If I do try to buy thr Linden and my card gets charged a second time, will I be able to get the first $25 back?
You can cash out, but the credit card companies won't allow LL to send the funds directly to your card, since you aren't actually returning any tangible goods. You can get a check, with a small fee deducted or, if you have PayPal, they will refund the USD to that account. Edit: Sorry, correction: you have to have $100 on your account before they'll cut a check, and they charge a 10% fee. http://www.secondlife.com/account/process-credit.php?lang=en

It will always draw from your credit first. Your payment method won't be touched until you use up or exceed your credit balance.

I should point out that the intention with camping is that you do it while you are not at your computer, such as while you are at work or asleep. You shouldn't ever be spending active SL time on a camping chair, even if that is how you choose to make money.

From: Rani Vayandar I tried to buy some Linden and I did exactly what you said not to. So now I have a $25 credit in my account and no Linden.
I've called Customer Service twice and they keep telling me to try back in 24 hours to buy Linden.
While it appears I can buy Linden now, it wants to charge my credit card and won't let me use the $25USD I already paid that's sitting in my account.
Any advice?
Thank you. I did the same thing when I first started, but it didn't take it from my credit card, it deducted it from the $25 in my account. Once i'd spent that I used the green $ sign at the top right hand side of the screen to purchase more and I still use that method, it's the easiest way, $10 goes a long way in SL.

Thats exactly right, it will only take from your credit card if your account is empty. I can't recall where, but somewhere in your account info it does actually tell you that, it's hard to find though.

Thanks for the support.
I listened to you guys and it worked. Yay! I have Linden!
I just removed my credit card from my account for extra insurnace that my card would not be charged. I don't think it was necessary, it deducted the amount from my $25USD credit.
Now the fun part - shopping!

For the OP: In the begining, I bought $L2000. Cost me a whole $7. Not much more than minimum wage.

Now the fun part - shopping! Here it is, go to, my account, lindex exchange, fees.......I think this means, 'first we'll use your US$ account and when that runs out, we'll use your payment source' How You are Billed for Buying L$ For basic Market Buy orders, any credit on your US$ account balance will automatically be applied to charges for purchasing Linden Dollars first, then any remainder will be charged to your payment source on file with us. You can check your payment setup in your account settings.

From: LadyHawke Teardrop Hello to all, I am a new person on here I just started last night and am trying to figure stuff out can anyone help? Do what most of us do , use your credit card. Unless of course you happen to be one of the best creators in SL, then make stuff and start selling. Money for Nothing doesn't happen here either............... You are much better off doing an hours overtime in RL than working 10 hours here for the same money.

From: Raudf Fox The most fun way is actually hunting for money trees. You can explore and enjoy SL, get to know great people, a few griefers and see the spots that LL doesn't advertise about Talking of money trees, where do I get one? Zog

to the OP... camping with an alt pays for my entire SL experience. however, camping spots are diminishing daily, and bots have taken most of them over, so it's probably too late to try and make a game of that sport. People seem to polarize on the camping issue. I camped quite a bit when I was new, then went through a purchasing lindens phase and am now in a period where I have everything I really "need" in SL and I enjoy living strictly on what I earn via teaching/the few items I sell atm/and the occasional contest I win at a couple dance spots. (My partner and I recently won 750L each for the best Rockabilly look at a small, friendly club ~ waves to a certain kid on the forums ) Anyway...when I did camp - and the occasional times I still do - I was always sorting never-ending inventory so I was spending the same online time and PC energy costs as I would have sitting in my house making no $L so even a few I figured were a bonus.

From: LadyHawke Teardrop Hello to all, I am a new person on here I just started last night and am trying to figure stuff out can anyone help? I never suggest buying Lindens to people who are just on SL to socialize. There are many social 'jobs' in SL that enhance your virtual experience and give you a nice sense of community. Having your 'work' friends and hang-out friends in SL is always loads of fun. If you want to become more immersed in the community- once I log on I will send you a invite to CLUB SCHOOL. You can choose to be a DJ or Host and get the training you need to get started(training is only two hours and at your convienience). There are 15 clubs advertising for staff in the lobby of the school or go to this forum link /118/1.html to search for gainful employment- so employment will not be an issue upon completion.

Hmm.
To me a social user is more likely to want to buy Lindens rather than spending time in world working at an SL job to raise cash.

Photoshopping, scripting or rendering to create SL content and create an income is something entirely different. .

. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That's the most ridiculous statement I think I've ever seen you type Lias. You're wound up so tight about your SL stuff I'm suprised you haven't vanished into nothingness. I'll be laughing all day for that one thanks.

An interesting perspective, I suppose, but I don't really see it that way. It has social aspects like some RL jobs do as well, but they're still jobs. As a social user, I have no interest in having a job in SL to raise cash, and I don't find the lack of a job to be limiting from the social perspective.

I've done the SL "social" job thing. Its not for everyone. Just avoid working for crazy ladies who take their social SL job WAAAY too seriously. You know who you are!

To me a social user is more likely to want to buy Lindens rather than spending time in world working at an SL job to raise cash. I agree, and I'm only in there to "socialize". I did not know that I was a socialist. I am sad now. hehehe. 1) Look for all the specials you can find for being new (Fleur, Sin Skins, etc. have under 30 free skin (well Sin Skins costs 1L, which is annoying when you truly are brand new); Gurl6, Diversity have free hair) 2) Newbie and oldbie - Savoir Hair has free hair (some 1L, but a lot is 0L) from many hair places in world; FabFree has both a group (lots of mention of free stuff comes in group chat, and some free stuff in notices), and a headquarters in world that has free stuff 3) Library - There are some neat stuff in the library, newly (relatively new) avatars added. Be sure to look also at the male (if you are female) or female avatars (if you are male) as some of the stuff works for either gender. 4) Be sure to explore SL in world - there are many neat places in Sl, the SL tourist board group on Flickr is a neat place to find pictures of places to explore inside Second Life - http://www.flickr.com/groups/sl_touristboard/5) Wander the money tree network - explore the area near them, and get money from them (warning - will need payment information on file for some of the money trees, another annoying thing) 6) And spend a few dollars to get some Lindens. Though might explore a little first, see what is out there, what there is to do, before you do.
